What is my Life Path Number?

The life path number is the most significant of all the numbers in a numerology chart. Your life path number is said to give key insight into your destiny, to show your greatest innate strengths and abilities that you bring to the world during your life. The life path number can give you an idea of what you can accomplish on your life journey.

Many people use astrology charts as a fun and interesting way to see the various energies and characteristics that surround them. Like astrology, numerology has been around for thousands of years and whether you believe in the influences or not, it can still be interesting to calculate your numbers and see what comes up.

No - it's not a political statement! Just using someone whose name is very recognizable by a lot of people. I also used the President in my hub on Name Number meanings.

I am using President Obama for my example because he is a widely recognizable person. I also used him in my example on Name Number Meanings.

How to Calculate the Life Path Number

The life path number is calculated using the full date of birth. You take the full date and add the numbers straight across as in the sample above. If you have a double digit month and date – say your birthday was October 12, 1981 then it would be 1 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 1 for example.

Add your birth date all the way across. Then reduce until you get down to a single digit number. The only exception is if your life path, like President Obama's is what is called a “master number” - double digits like 11 and 22.

In the secondary example above the number originally adds up to 23 which is reduced again 2 + 3 = 5

Once your birth date is broken all the way down to either a single digit or master number, you have your life path number! You can look below to see what yours means.

Number One

This is the life path of strong, determined individuals who have a strong sense of autonomy. Many call them natural leaders – those who aren't afraid to be who they are and to take charge and lead others. They often end up as leaders in their career or business owners. They are considerate of others, but prefer their independence. They like to be in control. Those with 1 life paths tend to be free thinkers and highly analytical problem solvers. They are great at getting projects started – initiative.

Number Two

People with this life path are well-balanced and agreeable. They tend to be natural peacemakers and are good at finding the middle ground. Two's thrive in atmospheres that promote equality and are excellent team members. Cooperative, sociable and harmonizing are all personality characteristics and strengths of a two. Sometimes they can be too self-sacrificing however and have to work to form solid boundaries in life in order to maintain the peace they crave. Two's are reliable and inclusive people who are very accepting of others.

Number Three

This is the life path number of the communicator, someone who is very expressive and creative. Three people are often writers, artists, or musicians. They have a natural ability to convey a message in meaningful and interesting ways. Three people are generally optimistic and have the ability to bring that out in others. They can be good motivational speakers, life coaches etc. Three's are very energetic and busy people, sometimes working to exhaustion.

Number Four

Four is the life path number of the down-to-earth pragmatist who is very hard-working. Fours love to build and construct. They are very orderly and by the book people who are meticulous and dedicated. They are sometimes prone to being workaholic types. People with this life path tend to follow established rules and need order and a sense of control in order to thrive. People with this life path number are all about planning and they don't like surprises – so don't expect a four to be very spontaneous.

Number Five

Those with this life path are your free spirited people who are fun-loving, adventurous and who demand a lot of freedom and personal space. Fives can be daredevils at times, they tend to act more on impulse or emotion and they thrive in environments that offer change and challenge. Five people love to travel and experience different cultures. They do not do well in office settings or in “routine” jobs or careers. People with this life path are extremely passionate, but sometimes struggle to finish what they start.

Number Six

Six people are hard working and tend to have a wide variety of skills and interests. Six people are very direct in how they address others and can be “brutally honest” at times. They are not the types that sugarcoat anything, but they are always honest so you always know where you stand with a six. Six people are very practical and efficient and they dislike anything to go to waste. Six people are very generous and loving, they can be seen as strict or demanding, but underneath they truly want to encourage others to be their personal best. Six people make great personal trainers! Their no-nonsense approach and strong desire to encourage the best in others make them natural in careers like this. They may also be drawn to counseling, teaching and other careers that push others to their limits. Six people are also very family oriented and form exceptionally strong bonds with their spouses and children.

Number Seven

Seven is the life path number of those who are more philosophical by nature. Your seekers and thinkers have this life path. Many with this life path number are extremely intuitive by nature and very in tune with others, though they tend to be quite introverted. A seven is likely to be a people watcher. Seven's love a good mystery and they are drawn to careers that allow them to grow their intellect and explore all the possibilities. Sevens are very loving people, but they are also very solitary, requiring a great deal of personal time and space to recharge their batteries. Seven people can be prone to being slow movers and procrastinators at times and it can be a struggle to keep their motivation and energy up.

Number Eight

Those with an eight life path tend to be natural born leaders with a strong mind for business. Eight people seem almost made for a life of success when their natural talents are nurtured. Eight people have the best of both worlds – they are visionaries with great imaginations and they are also very energetic and hard-working. They can take their dreams, turn them into concrete plans and run with them. Eight people tend to be very caring and inspiring leaders who lead by example. Eights do better when they don't allow their personal ambitions to crowd out their compassionate nature. If they become too stuck on ego gratification, they can become self-serving and selfish. For the most part, they are noble leaders however who others tend to admire. Many professional athletes, business leaders etc. have this life path.

Number Nine

Nine people are natural humanitarians who are compelled to serve humanity and leave the world a better place. Nine's are also natural leaders by nature, but they are compelled more by high ideals than personal ambition. Nine people are innovative and excellent at implementing new strategies and plans. They are progressive by nature, looking for new solutions to problems rather than falling back on conventional wisdom. Nine people tend to attract people like magnets. Everyone gravitates towards them and that can help them get the assistance and support they require to reach their loftier goals. Nine people have to work hard to remain optimistic and determined and not let disappointment lead to apathy. Sometimes people with this number have a very strong self-defeatist streak that can actually prevent them from finding and using their fullest potential.

Number Eleven (Master Number)

Eleven people are naturally very energetic and inspiring. They know how to captivate those around them and how to influence others. Most 11 people are extremely intelligent, motivated and have a strong desire to lead coupled with the desire to work well with others or compromise. When 11's are properly motivated they are excellent at heading groups or companies because they can get everyone to focus on their vision and make it a reality. The biggest challenges eleven faces are the tendency to be very self-aware, hyper aware to the point of becoming very critical of themselves. This can sometimes cause them to waiver or lose confidence. A properly balanced eleven is both very independent and confident and at the same time, very motivated by the desire to work well with others and to bring people together.

Number Twenty-Two

This is the strongest and rarest of life path numbers. It carries amazing potential, but also great weight and responsibility. The 22 can be a master visionary, someone who can really rally people towards a higher purpose. Many people with this life path face some very tough choices in their life, decisions that can make or break them. Those with this number have to embrace the crossroads in life and learn to adapt to changes. Fortunately 22's are almost always blessed with an abundance of common sense to go with their visionary skills. They have all the hardworking pragmatism of the four, with the balance and ability to weigh all sides of something of the two. Those not fully in tune with this number may find they struggle with their decisions all their life and never feel confident in their choices. Those who push themselves and embrace change can live truly amazing lives. Twenty two is often drawn to politics or other international arenas.

I've actually been scouring the internet trying to find an explanation as to why 4 is my life path, but I don't fit a 4 at all and almost completely fit a 3. Strange to find someone else in the same predicament. All my other numbers are accurate, too. Weird! I guess when it comes down to it, we know ourselves enough to know that much.

Hi Jane, I don't know. I don't put a whole lot of faith in it, I think it's fun and in many cases quite surprising by its accuracy, but not 100% nothing is. I know my astrology charts for example (the full one) have some things in there that make no sense for my personality. Also, sometimes our life goals change as a result of the choices we make etc. As long as you're happy and doing what you love - that's all that truly matters :).

Do you ever see someone who's life path is completely wrong? All my other numbers are completely accurate. I'm just wondering what's with it.

I actually land at a Life Path# 33 .. (when the digits of my DOB are added in a linear fashion it reduces to a 33) ..As a staunch believer in numerology I found your article very interesting ..and I certainly fit the patterns of a life path# 6 as described by you..

      Great hub!

Out of interest I worked out my son's life path number - 6 that is if there isn't a master number 33. He is the complete opposite of the description apart from one thing; he is very demanding. Does it count that he's only 21 but immature?

Very interesting hub! I'm a 5 and my husband is a 7. The 7 fits him perfectly, though I'm not sure I quite fit a 5. I don't see myself as being completely bored by routine jobs, I sometimes welcome it, but it is true that I love to travel and experience new cultures, which was something I haven't encountered in many astrology / numerology /etc. readings I've done!

Great Hub -- My number is 7 -- and my birthday is on the 7th day of September. The number 7 has been glaringly prominent my entire life -- so I claim it whole heartedly. The description of a 7 fits me pretty well including the "intuitive" part which I've recognized since a very small child. Enjoyed this read! Best/Sis
