What is Numerology?

Numerology is a method of divination which requires no particular skill to practice. It requires no psychic ability. All you need is a piece of paper and a pen.

Numerology is also known as isopsephy. Isopsephy loosely translates from the Ancient Greek language as 'equal pebbles', as students then used pebbles arranged in patterns to learn maths and geometry.

Every letter of the Greek alphabet was assigned a numerical, mythological and symbolic value. Similar systems evolved with the Arabic and Latin alphabets so it seems unlikely that either system developed in isolation.

The system of numerology given below has allegedly been developed to correspond as accurately as possible with the English alphabet.

Did Pythagoras Invent Numerology?

Most of us have heard of Pythagoras. Even if we know next to nothing about him, his name is forever associated with Ancient Greece and those stern-looking marble busts which lurk in museum alcoves.

He was born some time around 570 BCC, on the Greek island of Samos. Much of the historical references to Pythagoras and his work were written long after he had already died, and the chroniclers of those days enjoyed re-writing and embroidering history just as much as modern-day journalists seem to.

Origins of Pythagoras' Philosophy

However, most historians agree that Pythagoras travelled in search of knowledge, and the various origins of his ideas are given as Egyptian, Roman, Chaldean, Jewish, Phoenician, Magian (via Sumerian), with a dash of training from the Delphic Oracle herself. There were long-established trading routes between all these groups of people, so it is not impossible for at least some of this to have some basis in truth.

When he was around forty years old, he settled in Croton, Italy, where there was a Greek colony. There, he began to teach a philosophy which came to be known as the Pythagorean system of esoteric doctrine, a system made known only to those initiated into its secrets, in keeping with tradition. Its ideas are popularly believed to have influenced the much later Rosicrucian and Masonic traditions, and from Masonry to have passed into the Golden Dawn and from there into some contemporary neo-pagan religions.

So did Pythagoras really invent or develop the method of numerology set out below? We can but speculate.

Origins of this Numerology System

The method of numerology described on this Hubpage was handed to me on two sheets of A4 file paper by one of Thomas Joseph Walton's pupils. Both sides of one of these sheets are presented here, further down this page. Tomas Walton, or "T" as he was often known, was the leader of a small group of spiritual seekers who met in Liverpool throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His philosophy had many similarities with that of GI Gurdjieff.

For more information about Thomas Joseph Walton, see Further Reading below.

The person who handed me these two sheets described this numerological system as the "Cabala of Pythagoras".

Numerology - How it Works

With this system of numerology, which allegedly has its origins with the Pythagorean system of esoteric doctrine, each letter of the Greek alphabet was interpreted as having a numerical value. Each letter was also believed to possess a mythological, Cabalistic and symbolical counterpart.

The Roman alphabet, which we use today, allegedly received as close a comparison to the Greek alphabet as was possible. It is advised that a purely phonetic spelling of names is used with this system.

Using Numerology

Using my own name, I will demonstrate how this system of numerology works.

Adele, when written phonetically, becomes Adel. So:-

A=1 :- ambition, passion, purpose;

D=4 :- wisdom, strength, power;

E=5 :- marriage and happiness;

L=20 :- wisdom through asceticism.

Your Fate Revealed?

Next, add together each numerical value. This process is said to reveal a person's fate or destiny. So, using the same example, 1+4+5+20=30. The number 30, in this system, is interpreted to represent marriage, recognition and fame.

Reduce 30 to 3, by removing the redundant 0, and 3 is interpreted to represent recognition of god, soul and destiny. To reduce the 'fate number' to a single digit is said to reveal what is hidden within a person's psyche or soul.

If, for example, your 'fate number' was 32, you would work it as 3+2=5, and 5 would be the 'psyche number'. You would then look up the number 5 in the list of interpretations.

Following in the Footsteps of your Ancestors

Use your family name with this numerological system to discover genetic influences which help to form your life.

For example, my family name is Bray, and so:-

B=2 :- ruin, fatality, opposition;

R=80 :- restoration to health;

A=1 :- ambition, purpose, passion.

Y=400 :- long journey.

As before, next add together each numerical value. So, 2+80+1+400=483. This breaks down to 400+80+3.

400 :- long journey;

80 :- restoration to health;

3 :- recognition of god, soul and being.

Reduced further, 4+8+3=15 (outer world). 1+5=6 (inner world).

15 :- kindness and integrity;

6 :- perfected labour (Sun).
