Out of Body Experiences Are They Real?

Astral Projection or Out of the Body experience,
Astral Projection or Out of the Body experience,

Astral Projection.

I remember waking up and reaching for the clock. But for some reason my hand couldn't grab it.

So I opened my eyes. And to my total amazement I realized that I was looking down at the clock, not sideways! Turning to my left, I saw someone lying on the bed. It was me.

I fell back to sleep and woke up in my usual position. But I remembered the experience and knew it wasn't a dream. This incident is what started off my research into out of the body experiences many years ago.

So what's the different between Out of the Body experience or the soul leaving the body after death?

Fascinating read! And so much to think about.

Journeys Out of the Body: The Classic Work on Out-of-Body Experience (Journeys Trilogy)
Journeys Out of the Body: The Classic Work on Out-of-Body Experience (Journeys Trilogy)

I read this in just a few sittings purely because it was so interesting. The way we dream, what happens if we do travel outside our bodies, and so on. So many times while reading it, I found myself saying, 'Yes! I know what you mean!' Great read!

Out of Body Experience. OBE.
Out of Body Experience. OBE.

Out of the Body Experience

An out of the body experience is something that many of us have, but not many remember. We wake up with a feeling of 'other' going on but not sure why. I remember one particular experience that totally freaked the hell out of me!

I was about 25 years old. I was asleep in my bedroom at home when suddenly I was woken up by a noise outside. At least I believed it was outside. I opened my eyes and there above me was the strangest, spookiest thing, I had ever seen.

I yelled! Then jumped out of bed and raced across the room. On the ceiling I could see a huge swirling cream? Grey? colored mist rather like a slow moving Twister reaching down into a funnel/point down to my stomach!

As I screeched and ran, I realized that the funnel was following me! But as I looked down it disappeared into my middle. My solar plexus.

By this time my husband was like, 'What what? what's up?'

I just stood back and stared. I yelled 'Did you see that?' and of course the answer was no.

I realized then that I had just experienced an O.O.B.E! Obviously I caught myself 'coming back'!.

Scary experience!

O.O.B.E on his way to the Toilet! You couldn't make it up!

O.O.B.E or Near Death?

Its only happened a couple of times since, but I will never forget it. It may sound obvious but the similarities between Near Death and O.O.B.E are not necessarily exactly the same.

For example if our Souls can wander the Universe at night while we sleep then if someone is near death its pretty clear that their Soul would drift and get ready to break.

Many people have experienced this rush of Soul leaving their body, only to be shot back into it with a jolt as they are brought back to life.

And there seems to be a theme running through everybody's experience that makes me wonder at its significance. Whether you are suffering a sleep paralysis or an out of the body experience, people have mentioned a buzzing or clanging in their heads before it happens.

And trust me its terrifying to hear! You just know something odd is about to happen but you can't figure out what!

Its happened on quite a few occasions of sleep paralysis and I hate it.

Maybe the connection between sleep paralysis and O.O.B.E should be looked into.

I do have a theory.

Maybe sleep paralysis, when you can't move, but feel, and see, strange things going on, is a prelude to flipping out of your body. Maybe you just need a push and wham out you go!

Andrew Clover had an amazing out-of- body experience. Here is his story as told to the Guardian Newspaper.

Andrew Clover was in a hurry. His wife was going to be home in 30 minutes. He had two daughters, 10 and 6 years old, at home with him. And he wanted to go and meet his 12 year old from school.

So after a few minutes deliberating what to do, he asked the girls if they would be alright for a few minutes, and after they said yes, he headed off down the road and through a field to get to the school on time.

At this point he realized that his shoes weren't made for mud so he decided to jump over a fallen tree and a large puddle.

But he caught his trousers on the branches and fell in a sickening heap, banging his head on a huge rock.

In his words he says,

'Bang, I was out of my body, and I could see myself lying face down in the puddle. I was terrified!'

'Oh God, what about the girls?'

Then somehow even though his body was in the field, his 'soul' entered the village and he saw his daughter getting off the bus.

Then in a second he found himself back at home. The elder daughter was brushing her hair and his younger daughter had fallen asleep on the sofa.

His mind then raced through a number of scenario's that had happened to him in his lifetime, mainly involving his kids and the things they had done together.

He soon started to feel really sad, but dreamy. His mind starting floating upwards and then he felt really light. After opening his eyes he could see that he was swimming up through warm water, or something similar. Then he saw a sparkling light. At this point he felt a wonderful peace.

Then he heard a voice.

'You can't be here now,' it said. He said that the voice sounded playful.

He felt sick and felt like he was falling. Then bang.

Another voice. 'Be here,' and he felt a prod in his back.

Next thing he knew, he was crawling out of the field and his daughter was walking towards him, asking if he was okay.

Man floats out of body in an astral projection
Man floats out of body in an astral projection

A brief but powerful description of Astral Projection.

Robert and Suzanne Mays were interviewed by Epoch magazine in 2011.

They stated that they had been told by a witness to an OBE, that he heard someone calling for help, and he saw a foggy figure at the window.

Evidently a man had been severely injured in a car crash, and feeling his body floating, he headed towards a house and started yelling. And the witness heard him!

They went for help and found the injured man. He went on to make a full recovery.

Science and The O.O.B.E. or Astral Projection.

There is new research that states that scientists can explain out of the body experiences. They state that they have unlocked the mystery of the O.O.B.E experience.

Andra M. Smith and Claude Messierwere work at the University of Ottawa describe a particular experiment in their paper Frontiers of Human Neuroscience.

When investigating a woman who claimed she had an O.O.B.E, they checked her brain with an FMRI machine and noticed something interesting.

The results showed a strong deactivation of the visual cortex while it activated a part of her brain on the left side which dealt with imagery, or kinesthetic imagery.

In plain English, the part of the brain that makes it possible for us to understand the world we are living in. In other words, where you 'feel' you are, in the real world.

So, is this the answer?

The answer or just more Questions?

I personally don't think so.

And here's why.

I believe what they experienced in the science lab is a different kind of Out of the Body experience.

For example, the woman felt herself floating and 'seeing' herself around and above her body. But that is purely psychological.

It does not explain the 'real' Out of the Body experience, where someone finds themselves floating into the corner of the room, and can see things on the top of shelves, or out of the window, which they couldn't possibly see whilst in their body and laying on the bed.

Brain science astral projection out of the body experience
Brain science astral projection out of the body experience

Science and reality.

I totally understand that scientists want to find the answer to everything in the Universe. It makes sense. I would love to know too.

They are so desperate to make sense of our everything that they test it, label it then put it to bed so to speak.

I believe in this case they fitted the square problem into a round box, squeezed it in and shut the lid.

Its not the same Out of Body experience that normal, everyday people, do have.

Yes I understand the brain anomaly. And yes the activity in the brain did show how hallucinations work.

But if you have had a a real bona fida out of the body experience then you will know the difference between hallucination and reality.

An hallucination will not make you see out of the top window, or read a book title on the top shelf of the bookcase. Unlike real O.O.B.E's an hallucination is just that, imagination.

So, have you ever experienced an Astral Projection? If so, what happened and how did it make you feel?

Answers in the comments below, and thanks!

Nell, I've been told that I have astral traveled in my life. The first time I was in high school. My dad awakened in the middle of the night to find me standing at the foot of his and my mom's bed, staring at him. I'd never left my room!

The second time I was newly divorced. My son was about six. I had been dating a guy who suddenly had to go up north to visit his ailing mom. Subconsciously I didn't believe him. Anyway, one morning he called me in a complete panic. He said that I had visited him the night before. I was hovering over his bed and my son was hovering behind my right shoulder. All he saw were our heads and torsos. He said we had conversation. Of course, I didn't remember any of it, but I believe him because he told me what I was wearing. Normally, I sleep naked, but for some reason, that night I donned a tie-dye nightshirt before going to bed. I guess I somehow knew I would be going on a journey that night!

Very good job debunking the “new” research but what you described doesn’t sound like research at all but an anecdote of brain activity in a subject. Was there more to the research than that? There must be if it is called scientific research and what were the conclusions of the study if any?

From what I’ve read there is no research that concludes OBEs are real.

As far as recalling seeing things unknown to the person experiencing an obe I can think of at least one other explanation for that that don’t require actually leaving your body. That one would be psychic phenomenon like premonitions. If psychic abilities exist, although that hasn’t been proven scientifically, to cope with a phenomenon like premonition or recalling things you didn’t know the brain could be imagining you are getting it through an obe. Another theory could be that your body is not only physical but spiritual and upon death your spirit body leaves your physical body but because you never left your spirit body it is not an obe but an opbe, out of physical body experience!

These aren’t scientifically proven but neither is anything else on obes.

I have never had an out of body experience but I was in the presence of one who had. We were all talking around the table and all of a sudden, she was no,longer with us. We thought she had a stroke but she did not show signs of it so we just waited and after a time she was back and asked us what we were doing so we explained what happened. We got concerned.

When a person is scared, a brain area called the amygdala becomes more active, laying down an extra set of memories that go along with those normally taken care of by other parts of the brain.

"In this way, frightening events are associated with richer and denser memories," Eagleman explained. "And the more memory you have of an event, the longer you believe it took." -

Hi Tom, how amazing is that? Makes you wonder doesn't it? I know what you mean about time. Around the year 1991, I had a big car crash, and as it was happening, every single thing slowed down. I could see the wall coming for us, I put my hand out to stop my friend from hitting the wheel, and when we got out, the whole of the capri was sheered off at the front! if it had been another car I wouldn't be here now!

Hi Nell. While reading your Hub, I remembered a friend telling me when he fell from a ladder, he saw his entire life flash in his mind. He said he saw every bit of his 35 years of life in less than three seconds, the time it took to fall. It kind of makes one wonder if time really exists at all. Wonderful Hub! :)

Very interesting to read about this Nell. I do not recall ever having that experience. The closest I have come is when I used to fly in my dreams. I have not done that in some time. It used to be so much fun looking down on people, things and places. To this day I continue to have very vivid dreams.

I first got to know about astral projection via Lobsang Rampa's writings. I was in my very early teens and at that time I was taking medication for migraine. The med was so strong that I was unsure whether I was firmly on ground or simply paddling around! Lobsang's description of astral lakes and waterfalls was too vivid and 'should not go unexplored,' I thought. I shut the doors of the room and gave it a go.

Concentration, breathing, willing ... and on and on! Nothing happened! Rinsed and repeated ... ¡Nada!

It was indeed disappointing. However, one day not long afterwards, when I was dozing off influenced by migraine medication, I felt I was sliding down a tunnel, towards a bright light. Jeez! Progressively losing control, I was!

Fortunately I was able to grab the controls and steer myself to reality. The End!

Many years later I discovered that this tunnel story is quite common. I've come across people who are of the opinion that astral projection is actually the mind playing tricks. Lol!

      I dunno!

I agree with you. I also think that there can't be possible explanations for everything in Science. Science as we know it, is not as developed as we would like. Science a recent, while the world has a more complicated, more ancient history than Science has.

Out of body experiences are also talked about in Yoga. I think you should read about it, you might enjoy that a lot. One consciously leaves the body to awaken the Kundalini Shakti. Yeah, I am sure you are gonna love it.

I've been a lucid dreamer since I was a little girl and always flew in my dreams...which I now realize were out of body experiences or what witches call "hedge-crossing". Certain things can help me leave my body...usually shamanic drumming of some kind and meditation. I believe I had an out of body experience just before my dad died. I could not get to see him and knew he was dying and I was so stressed about it all and although it could have been a dream it just seemed too real. I crawled in his bed and put my arms around him and we spoke telepathically I guess you would call it although I was there with him. I was still there and aware when he was taken out to an ambulance like truck in back of the hospital and I knew he was gone, but it was OK.

Talking to my mom later who was there I described the place, his bed etc as it really was.

That was many years ago and I have not thought about it in awhile. So pleased you brought it to mind. I really should write all that down to never forget it.

Too bad this wasn't a challenge, I could have had something for it.

I will go read the other hubber's experiences I see mentioned here.

Nell, you say that scientists have closed the book on this subject. Not so! They may have closed the book on the type of OBE that you discuss here. But there are actually two kinds of OBE. The one you discuss in this article, which occurs at any time in ones life (and may be some kind of hallucination), and the other kind, which occurs during a Near Death Experience.

The latter is even more mysterious because it happens when the brain is not getting any oxygen due to conditions such as cardiac arrest.

I recently had studied cases reported by neurosurgeons who have written books on the subject.

Scientists can’t explain why these patients have an Out of Body Experience that they can clearly describe after they are resuscitated, because their brain was not functioning during that episode. For that matter, they were brain dead by definition: no brain activity detected with an EEG.

This is why scientists are mystified by this kind of OBE.

Interesting. I have never experienced anything like this. But I have experienced some strange things that can't be explained by anything considered normal by most standards. I've dreamt of something going to happen in my future and then experienced it so that I knew what would happen next. And I have awakened on more than one occasion with a sense that something bad was about to happen to someone I know and feeling as if I should pray for them in earnest. I think I started one woman with my reaction to her after she told me about a car accident she had the night I woke up knowing she was in trouble somehow. I couldn't hide my shock and turned pale like a ghost.

This is sort of an absurd thought, but if people 'feel" the presence of a loved one before they die or witness other events in the form of an O.O.B.E. , does it ever bother you to think someone may be witnessing your most private of moments. What a creepy thought.

Nell...No, I'm sorry to say I have not ever had this experience nor anything like it, unless an exceptionally vivid, clear & detailed dream counts~~which I doubt.

As to your Title question....I have to say that I believe OBE's are REAL to those who experience them & later on, relate what occurred as best as possible. I do believe them & their recount of the experience.

Having said this, I suppose my question in the end would be, are they actually OUT OF BODY episodes or are there other explanations/reasons....and if so, what? I know this is what you are expressing in your wonderful article, Nell, so I feel there is so much to research, to study and understand, it remains a huge mystery to me..

I would love to just once, speak face to face with someone as they describe their own OBE. I think I would tire them with so many questions!

Great article as always, Nell. Sending hugs across the pond....Paula

I wrote them down and read every book I could find about the topic, until I eventually came to terms with the fact that the I/me who is captured in my present body is very able to escape while I am sleeping.

One night I had a 'nightmare'. I was busy roaming the sky above a town when I realized that the cord that connected me to my body got stuck in smoke that came from the chimney of one or another factory. I can't remember how I got myself out of that dilemma, only that I woke up with a heart bouncing in my throat. If it was not for my frequent astral experiences, I would have agreed that this was merely a dream.

Then there was my father's Coronary Thrombosis which I witnessed with my own eyes while I was living in another town. I wrote a short story about it.

This hub of yours made me decide to make notes of future experiences.

      Thanks, Nell.

I enjoyed reading this Nell, very interesting and informative. All I can say in answer to the question posed in your title is, that mine was real, or should I say felt real?

Hi Yves, yes there are many people out there that debunk it, but they don't get to see the genuine stuff which is sad. I always think that about James Randi who has spent his life telling everyone that psychic stuff doesn't happen! lol! thanks for reading, nell

I have never had an OOBE, but I find them very interesting. I do believe it is possible and I do not think it's hallucination. :)

OMG! You reminded me of something (like this) that happened to me twenty or more years ago. But I still remember everything very clearly. So I guess, it was not a dream, because I usually forget my dreams after I wake up.

I firmly believe that these things happen to many people. They are difficult to explain to others, because they don’t believe it. And doctors term it as hallucinations.

Interesting personal experiences shared by you Nell and very well written article.

Good to read another interesting article on this subject by you!

      Thanks for sharing!

Nell, it's been a long time since I've read any of your hubs. I never had an OBE before. It does scary and a bit daunting in my opinion. Thanks for sharing this read. I did spot some typos too.

Very interesting. I believe that astral projection is a reality because I know two people who have experienced it, and I trusted that they were telling me the truth. This sort of thing fascinates me. You've had many psychic experiences, Nell, due to your natural gift, have you not? I always enjoy it when you write about the supernatural. There is more to life than we know. Maybe science will explain all of it one day. But maybe not.

Hi Flourish, Astral projection and O.O.B.E's are exactly the same thing, just different names for them. the astral body is just the soul. Thanks so much for reading, nell

Very interesting personal accounts, both yours and he others you convey. It’s too easy to dismiss as a hallucination, although I don’t know what it is otherwise. Doesn’t explain the book title example that you give.
