Padre Pio: Stigmata Of God - Part 12

Updated on January 31, 2009

INTERIOR SCENE - SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO CHURCH, APRIL 1922 - DAYTIME

Beautiful blue-eyed blonde MARY PYLE, her assistant from Pyle Corporation FRED ELLIOT and her Romanian Orthodox friend VASILE BLAGA are in the throng awaiting the beginning of the Vespers Mass celebrated by 34 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO.

MARY PYLE

I can't believe I am actually about to see Padre Pio!

VASILE BLAGA

When you see the radiance shining from his face you will know everything I have told you about him is the truth!

FRED ELLIOT

(fidgeting with a large briefcase)

Miss Pyle, I must rush off to the telegraph office to send news to New York of your approval to sell some of your family's holdings in Herald Square but...

MARY PYLE

Hush, Fred!

34 year-old Padre Pio enters. The crowd is spellbound by the little friar. Mary Pyle is completely awestruck at his presence. She joins the queue to receive a blessing from him. Finally her turn arrives, she is on her knees and 34 year-old Padre Pio puts his hand on her head.

34 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

Daughter, don't go traveling anymore, but stay here, enter the Franciscan Third Order and build a good house for yourself and other souls, because your permanent work will be here.

Mary Pyle falls to her hands and knees crying. She is barely able to compose herself to speak to the Capuchin. She sobs out the words.

MARY PYLE

Can I build a friary at Pietrelcina?

34 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

Yes, do it at once and let it be dedicated to the Holy Family.

Vasile Blaga and Fred Elliot have to help Mary Pyle back to her pew. 34 year-old Padre Pio is now ready to bless the entire packed congregation for Vespers. As is normal for him, he suddenly turns and shooes away a couple of invisible threatening entities. He is about to place a consecrated Host in the monstrance when DONATO, a bricklayer, springs forward from the crowd, rushes to the altar and places a loaded revolver at the friar's head, screaming at the top of his lungs.

DONATO

Either dead or alive! You're going to stay with us in this town!

The police officers rush Donato, wrestle him to the ground and take his weapon away.

34 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

Careful! Don't hurt him! Be gentle with him!

EXTERIOR SCENE - PIETRELCINA HILLSIDE, JULY 1922 - DAYTIME

Mary Pyle is accompanying Archpriest Pannullo by the arm as he is now old and almost totally blind. Fred Elliot is rushing behind them dragging his huge briefcase and stumbling over rocks.

MARY PYLE

Is this the place?

ARCHPRIEST PANNULLO

Yes. This is where Francesco pointed to that day. He said 'Don't you hear the chorus of angels? Don't you hear the church bells ringing?' Of course none of us heard anything. But he did!

MARY PYLE

(turning to Fred Elliot)

Fred, go to the municipality, find out who owns this land and purchase it immediately.

INTERIOR SCENE - SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO RECTORY, JULY 1922 - DAYTIME

BISHOP ALBERTO VALBONESI is sitting beside 34 year-old Padre Pio.

34 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

Sweet is the hand of the Church, even when it batters us.

BISHOP ALBERTO VALBONESI

You cannot imagine my regret in having been chosen by the Cardinal to bring the news of these restrictions to you. Many of us did everything in our power to avoid this.

34 YEAR-OLD PADRE PIO

We must beware of putting ourselves against our Mother Church. We must be silent, and suffer. All I ever wanted to be was a poor friar who prays.

EXTERIOR SCENE - PIETRELCINA HILLSIDE, OCTOBER 1922 - DAYTIME

The land Archpriest Pannullo pointed out is now a construction site. The entire population of Pietrelcina is marching up the dirt path, headed by the town band blaring anthems. At the bottom of the hill lie the ruins of the old Church of Purgatory. The people of Pietrelcina begin to transport the huge rocks from the old church up the steep hill to the new site. Mary Pyle watches in awe as men, women and children place carry huge rocks up the hillside as if they were empty baskets. Slight, short women are balancing boulders weighing well over a hundred pounds on their heads while they make the uphill trek in the searing sun without the slightest sign of effort. Even Archpriest Pannullo, almost blind, old and frail is easily carrying huge stones unassisted up the hill.

EXTERIOR SCENE - PIETRELCINA HILLSIDE, OCTOBER 1922 - NIGHTTIME

Mary Pyle watches as the last of the huge rocks is placed on a pile at the top of the hill by an unfatigued woman. At that moment a huge cross of shimmering light rises from the construction site and into the night sky.

INTERIOR SCENE - SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO INNER CHAPEL, OCTOBER 1922 - DAYTIME

34 year-old Padre Pio stands by the altar in a tiny, dusty, darkened chapel with waterstained walls, and he begins celebrating Mass. He is alone.
