Padre Pio: Stigmata Of God - Part 13

Updated on January 31, 2009

INTERIOR SCENE - VATICAN POPE'S OFFICE, OCTOBER 1922 - DAYTIME

CARDINAL MERRY DEL VAL is sitting by the desk of POPE PIUS XI.

POPE PIUS XI

From what you tell me, this fanatical friar is willing to incite riots and bloodshed to avoid his transfer. The Holy See has no choice but to indefinitely suspend him from all priestly functions a divinis.

CARDINAL MERRY DEL VAL

Yes, Holy Father. I will draft the decree at once.

A CAPUCHIN FRIAR with his hood pulled over his face approaches Pope Pius XI's desk. He kneels and kisses the Pope's feet.

CAPUCHIN FRIAR

Your Holiness, for the good of the Church, I pray you not take this course of action. I humbly ask for your blessing.

The somewhat confused Pope gives the conventional blessing to the Friar, who kisses his feet again, rises and leaves.

POPE PIUS XI

(a beat)

Who let that blasted friar in here?

CARDINAL MERRY DEL VAL

I will discipline the Swiss Guards at once, Holy Father.

CARDINAL MERRY DEL VAL rushes to the door, pushes it wide open and confronts a SWISS GUARD.

CARDINAL MERRY DEL VAL

Guard, who let that friar into the Pope's office without permission?

SWISS GUARD

Which friar, Cardinal? We have all been diligently standing guard here and you were the last person to enter over an hour ago.

CARDINAL MERRY DEL VAL's eyes widen as he blanches. The Pope is taken aback. He looks down at his feet where the friar was, then looks back up and shouts from his desk.

POPE PIUS XI

Cardinal! Guards! Let no one speak of this incident!

INTERIOR SCENE - SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO INNER CHAPEL, OCTOBER 1922 - DAYTIME

34 year-old Padre Pio finishes celebrating his lonely Mass, the shadow of a smile on his face.

TESTIMONIAL MONTAGE, 1920-1930s - VARIOUS

A succession of testimonials is shown from around the world, with the identifying information of the individuals as a SUPER.

GENNARO MAGLIONE, ALMOND FARMER, SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO, ITALY

There was an infestation of caterpillars that were destroying the entire almond crop. I went with my neighbours to beg Padre Pio to help. He blessed the trees from his window and the next morning there was not a caterpillar left in the fields! But the almond flowers were all gone, so the should have been no crop that year. It turned out to be a bumper crop, the biggest anyone in these parts had ever seen!

PRINCE KARL KLUGKIST, RUSSIAN ROYALTY IN EXILE, FIRENZE, ITALY

I have kissed Padre Pio's hand and smelled the strong perfume that emanates from his stigmata. I have looked through his stigmata and have seen clear through to the other side. He is nothing but an instrument of the divine. He has reached the goal of Divine Union.

OFELIA DI GIORGIO, RETIRED GRANDMOTHER, PALERMO, ITALY

My granddaughter Gemma was born totally blind with no pupils in her eyes. Learned doctors from all over Sicily examined the poor girl and confirmed the birth defect. When she was seven, I took her to see Padre Pio. He made the sign of the cross and my beautiful little Gemma's first sight was that of the radiant face of the friar saint. She now has a little baby girl of her own and since that day has always had perfect vision! God bless you Padre Pio! God bless you!

ALFONSO XIII, KING OF SPAIN, MADRID, SPAIN

I wrote Padre Pio, “having learned that your prayers are heard by the Most high and that on various occasions you have obtained the complete cure of persons so ill that only divine intervention could save them, I take the liberty of turning to you, Father, in earnest supplication to save my three sons.”

FRANCO IANNELLI, INDUSTRIALIST HEIR, BOLOGNA, ITALY

I had been blind since birth. I approached Padre Pio and he yelled “You filthy wretch, go away!” I complained to another clergyman who drew from me the confession that I was living with a woman I was not married to. He told me to repent for my sins and return to Padre Pio, who this time welcomed me as a son and restored my sight.

MOTHER TERESA SALVADORES, SCHOOL SUPERIOR, MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY

I had been in hospital for three months near death with inoperable stomach cancer and my heart was about to fail. I had a large tumour in my side and another in my throat that was choking me. A friend brought a glove that had been worn by Padre Pio and touched it to my throat and side. I slept for three hours and saw the Capuchin. I awoke perfectly healthy with no trace of disease and immediately returned to my duties.

MARIA DI PUGLIA, HOUSEWIFE, LECCE, ITALY

The doctors said my baby was incurable and would soon die. I took the train to San Giovanni Rotondo, but my baby died that night. I put his little body in the suitcase and showed it to Padre Pio, crying. He put his hand on his little head, looked up to heaven and the baby stirred and cried! Padre Pio told me, “Mother, why are you crying, your child was sleeping.” The shouts of joy filled the church!

MURPHY ROBERTS, CHEF, BALTIMORE, MARYLAND

Ever since I graduated from cooking school, my souffles always fell. It turned out to be a standing joke in my restaurant. One day I was making a crème brulee and the scorch marks looked like the bearded face and hood of the friar. From then on, my souffles have always been perfect!

GIOVANNI MUROLO, RAILROAD MECHANIC, FOGGIA, ITALY

I was taking my family on a picnic to the cave in the mountain where the Archangel Michael defeated the Devil. I clearly saw with my own eyes Padre Pio siding with the Devil and defeating the Archangel!

MADDALENA CAPACI, OLIVE MERCHANT'S WIFE, TRAPANI, ITALY

I have been making an annual pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo for the past five years. Padre Pio never misses the opportunity to bless me and my eight children with his sacred... sperm. Last year he blessed my youngest daughter twice!
