Papal Resignation, Malachy 'Prophecy,' and the Coming Tribulation
For the Levites left their common lands and their holdings and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons cast them out from serving as priests of the LORD, and HE APPOINTED HIS OWN PRIESTS FOR THE HIGH PLACES AND FOR THE GOAT IDOLS AND FOR THE CALVES THAT HE HAD MADE. - 2 Chronicles 11:14-15
The headlines have announced the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI due to his lack of physical and mental abilities to fulfill his duties. As this decision has swept through the headlines, there is a supposed "prophecy" that was written over nine-hundred years ago by a man named Malachy who was a 12th century Irish monk. He received a prophetic revelation that he committed to paper that has been accurate so far, concerning the succession of the Popes leading the ushering in a time of tribulation time spoken of in the book of Revelation in the Bible.
This article will explore who Saint Malachy was, the interesting facts about his life, the interesting accuracy of the written predictions relating to the succession of Popes to the headlines of today, and the end time prophecy in book Revelation. Is this all just mere coincidence, or is there much more to it? It is up to you to decide.
The Story of Malachy
The evidence of who Malachy was can be traced to the writings of Saint Bernard, who was one of his contemporaries. Malachy was ordained as a priest by Ceallach, who was the Archbishop of Armagh in 1119. At the age of twenty-five, Malachy was accepted for the priesthood even though the prescribed age was over thirty. The exception was due for his notable character and devotion to his duties.
After his ordination, Malachy went to Lismore to study theology and trained for public religious worship under St. Malchus. He believed he did not have sufficient preparation yet for his duties under Ceallach. After his studies, the Archbishop sent him out to preach the Word of God and correct the apostasy that crept into the Catholic Church.
Malachy established regulations for celibacy and other regulations for the clergy as well as sending out priests to instruct and educate the peasants of that day. In 1123, he returned to his homeland of Armagh and was given authority after his uncle resigned over the Abbey of Bangor. He ruled it for over a year and rebuilt the abbey and established a seminary there.
When Malachy turned thirty, he was chosen to become the Bishop of Connor and staffed a diocese under his care. It was during this time that Malachy’s instructor, Archbishop Ceallach, passed away and named him successor to his position. The position was not a “shoo-in” as Ceallach’s extended family wanted a cousin, Murtagh to have the position. Although by right, Malachy could have taken the position, he refused because of fear that bloodshed would come from Ceallach’s relatives. For the next three years he did not take up the position until he was threatened with excommunication unless he formally took up the position. He eventually conceded and took the position of the Archbishop of Armagh, but refused to enter the cathedral, or the city but chose to rule from the outside. Murtagh was the “false” Archbishop who had already been installed from the inside. It was due to the secular rulers and corruption within the church that refused to acknowledge Malachy as the real Archbishop.
In 1134, Murtagh died and his brother Nigellus, who was Ceallach’s brother took over as the "inside" Archbishop of Armagh. He and his friends also did not recognize Malachy’s legitimate position and claim that was rightfully his. Finally, a battle broke out between the two, and Malachy won as his opposition did not realize that he had a stronger armed militia. From this victory, Malachy broke the tradition of succession by blood relatives. In that day, most of the enviable positions were given to hereditary family members whether they were qualified or not. Many families in Europe were able to obtain great power and wealth due to this practice. Malachy realized the corruption of money and power that had superseded religion, and his goal was to change that. He succeeded in removing the oppression of power and greed from these intolerable families. Discipline and morality was once again restored, and peace came back to Armagh.
In 1139, Malachy resigned his position and appointed Gelasius of Derry as the new Archbishop. After the succession, Malachy made a trip to Rome to give an account of his diocese to Pope Innocent II. The journey would prove to be a difficult one as he would have to travel through Scotland, England, and France. Along the way, Malachy apparently received a vision of the succession of Popes starting with Pope Innocent II leading to the destruction of the Vatican City, and the time of the False Prophet as prophesied in the book Revelation.
1591 Lignum Vitae, p.311
From the list of one hundred and twelve Popes that were written down by Malachy, the validity and accuracy of his revelation are quite accurate when examining their traits. This article will refer to the twenty, and twenty-first century Popes leading up to the resignation of the one hundred and eleventh, Pope Benedict XVI. By referencing page 311 from the 1591 Lignum Vitae, the descriptive meanings given to each Pope appear to be accurate in their description.
“Luminen in caelo,” which means lights in the heavens, refers to Pope Leo XIII (1878 – 1903). He was known for his intellectualism who added to the Catholic theology and brought important reforms to the clergy and laity. He embraced Mary as being the co-mediator with Jesus Christ. Because of his intellectual prowess, Pope Leo XIII had true inner “light.”
Pope Pius X (1903-1914) was referred to as “Ignus Ardens,” which means ardent fire. He had a burning passion to bring spiritual renewal, but opposed and fought against modernism that was infiltrating the Catholic Church. He was canonized as a saint on May 29, 1954, and his body is known for having an almost perfect preservation without being embalmed, which many people claim to be a sign of his sainthood.
“Religio depopulate” means the depopulation, or destruction of religion. During Pope Benedict’s rule (1914- 1922) millions of Catholics and Christians were murdered during the Bolshevik revolution of 1914. Additionally, millions more people died because of the influenza pandemic during his papacy. The Pope saw great religious population through Communism and disease that took so many lives. He also believed Mary as being the co-Redeemer with Jesus Christ.
Pope Pius XI (1922-1939) is referred to as “Fides Interpida,” which means intrepid faith. The Pope was outspoken against the German and Italian fascism that put political and religious pressure on him. Adolph Hitler was furious with him because he was vehemently against Communism and Nazism. Through the Lateran Treaty of 1929, the Pope established The Papacy as the Head of State, and the Vatican City as a country.
Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) was known for having a true heart of a pastor and being deeply spiritual. “Pastor Angelicus” means angelic shepherd. This Pope is reported to have had visions, but none have been yet revealed.
Pope John XXIII (1958-1963) was referred to as “Pastor et Nauta,” which means shepherd and sailor. He was considered the true pastor, or shepherd of Roman Catholicism. Before he become Pope, he was known as the “Patriarch of Venice,” which was a city on the sea.
“Flos Florum” means flower of flowers and refers to Pope Paul (1963-1968). The Pope’s coat of arms had three iris blossoms on it. In the Catholic religion the fleur-de-lis means purity and chastity. The Pope proclaimed Mary to be the mother of the Church.
John Paul 1 (1978) ruled for only thirty days. He was referred to as “De medietate lunae,” which means from the midst of the moon. He was born during the day of the “half-moon” on October 17, 1912 and elected as Pope on August 26, 1978, which also was when there was a “half-moon.” Although his papacy was short-lived to thirty days, it is not short of intrigue and mystery because he died unexpectedly. What was revealed during his rule was that a number of Cardinals belonged to a secret Masonic Lodge known as P-2, which can be traced back to 1877. P-2 had become involved in a financial scandal where many heads of people in many areas of society where found to be listed as members. Pope John I was behind this investigation and wanted to dismiss any high ranking members in the Church who were revealed to be Freemasons. The mystery behind his death is shrouded in the coincidence behind the dismissals and replacements of the P-2 members in the Church. It hasn't been proven, but the ancient art of poisoning known as veneficia is rumored to be the method of operation in the "murder" of the Pope via the Illuminati.
“De Labore Solis,” which means the labor of the sun, references Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) who was born during a solar eclipse. After his death, he was entombed when the sun was eclipsed. On the night of Beltane, he was beatified on May 1, 2011.
The resigning Pope Benedict XVI (2005- February 2013), who is referred to as “Gloria Olivae,” means glory of the olive. By the choice of Benedict XVI, he became connected with the symbol of the olive branch, which has connections to the Benedictine monks.
By referencing the text on page 311 in the 1591 Lignum Vitae, the prophecy of Malachy refers to the last Pope that can be read on the right side of the page. It reads,
“In persecution extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oves in multis tribulationbus: quibus transactis civitas spticollis diruetur, & Judex tremedus judicabit populum suum. Finis.”
The translation is,
“In extreme persecution, the Seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of the seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End.”
What can be deduced from Malachy’s "prophecy," is that he has been pretty accurate so far. What remains to be seen is that the next elected Supreme Pontiff (112th Pope) of the Roman Catholic Church could be additional evidence for the start of the tribulation period leading to the false prophet as foretold in the book of Revelation in the Bible.
Malachy wrote, “the city of the seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people.”
Are There Scriptural Parallels?
Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, THAT GREAT CITY BABYLON, THAT MIGHTY CITY! FOR IN ONE HOUR IS THY JUDGEMENT COME. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men. – Revelation 18:10-13
Throughout history it has been evident that the Catholic Church has spent billions of dollars on the vast array of items spoken of in the above verses in Revelation. Additionally, they are the only religion who believes that they have the power over the souls of men. Catholic priests believe that they have the power through excommunication to send someone to heaven, or hell.
And hereis the mind which hath wisdom. THE SEVEN HEADS ARE SEVEN MOUNTAINS, on which the woman sitteth.– Revelation 17:9
The word, mountains, is oros in Greek, which can be rendered to hills. So in terms of a geographical location, the “mother of harlots” is located in the area of the seven hills.
FOR IN ONE HOUR SO GREAT RICHES IS COME TO NOUGHT. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, AND CRIED WHEN THEY SAW THE SMOKE OF HER BURNING, saying, What city is like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, ALAS, ALAS, THAT GREAT CITY wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! FOR IN ONE HOUR IS SHE MADE DESOLATE. – Revelation 18:17
The Roman Catholic religion is one of the largest ancient mystery Babylonian religions in the world.
And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were ALL NATIONS DECEIVED. – Revelation 18:23
The false prophet identified in Revelation is a person who will be able to perform great signs and wonders, and even be able to call fire down from heaven. Similarly, the apostate modern church system with their false prophets are able to perform counterfeit signs and wonders. These false prophets are deceiving the masses by making an image to the beast to get them to worship it.
And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men
And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should MAKE AN IMAGE TO THE BEAST, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to GIVE LIFE UNTO THE IMAGE OF THE BEAST, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. – Revelation 13:11-15
The evidence is pretty compelling and through history God has always given multiple confirmation to the followers of His Word to tell them about His plans and what He is going to do.
- Was Malachy used by God to predict a time of the tribulation?
- Is the evidence compelling enough to dig deeper, peruse, and compare and contrast his vision with history and what is happening today?
The true standard about a true prophet of God must be upheld first and foremost in God’s Holy Word.
And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, IF THE THING FOLLOW NOT, NOR COME TO PASS, THAT IS THE THING WHICH THE LORD HATH NOT SPOKEN, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. – Deuteronomy 18:21-22
Points to Consider
The Bible says that those who are true prophets of God are completely accurate.
- Was Malachy a true and genuine follower of Jesus Christ looking to do the will of God?
Malachy’s predictions seem accurate enough to give them some thought. We are living in dynamic times and the headlines attest to leading up to the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
It is important to understand the image of the beast and the system that it endorses. The Catholic Church and her harlots today have taken on the image of the beast by syncretizing with ancient Babylonian forms of worship to God. This is an abomination and is not compatible with the standard of Scripture we are to follow. Taking heed to what is going on in the world today, and also weighing and testing EVERYTHING that is going on within the modern man-driven church system is important. There is a great need to arm ourselves with the truth of God’s Word by preparing, being ready and promoting the genuine Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Many will be watching to see who will be the leading candidate to replace Pope Benedict. One of the leading candidates is Italy's Cardinal, who is Tarcisio Pietro Evasio Bertone. He was born in Romano Italy with his birth name of Pietro (Peter). Additionally, Ghana's Cardinal, Peter Turkson is called Peter the Roman by the people.
- Will Pietro, or Peter be favored as a successor?
We shall soon see at the next appointment.
There are many differing opinions from historians to skeptics.
- Does the evidence support that St. Malachy had a legitimate prophetic revelation from God?
- Was the written prophecy penned by him, and is the evidence compelling enough to warrant a closer look?
- Is the Catholic Church the Mother of Harlots?
These are just a few questions of many that should pique further investigation.
We must remember that true prophecy according to Scripture is the forth-telling of the very will of God of the past, present and future summed up in the consummation of God’s eternal purpose through Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will help guide us into all truth.
God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in THESE LAST DAYS has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. - Hebrews 1:1-2
We must filter everything through the Word of God. There is no extra biblical revelation. It had been competed and summed up in Jesus Christ; therefore, we must take any supposed "prophecy" such as Malachy's and filter it through the Word of God.
Do you believe Malachy's vision lines up with prophecy of Scripture, or do you deem it as extra-biblical and discard it?
