Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan Temple-A Unique One in Kerala Temples

Updated on October 7, 2016

The moment you reach the soil of Muthappan Temple at Parassinikadavu in Kannur in the North Kerala, your whole concept on a temple changes. Whatever ideas or presumptions you carry about a Hindu temple seem wrong on landing here. This is not a typical temple. Great surprises are there to experience and enjoy.

Parassinikadavu is a small village in the northern part of Kerala. The temple is situated on the banks of Valapattanam river, about 10 km from Taliparamba in Kannur district. The surroundings of the temple provide a beautiful landscape thanks to the presence of the lovely river. The rich presence of the coconut trees add an extra charm to the location. It is a sleepy village. Though the arrival of pilgrims and tourists are ever increasing, no major urbanization has taken place here. No hustle and bustle of a popular temple disturb you either.

Unique Features of the Temple

Though Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple or Muthappan Kavu is a temple, it is exclusively known or described as "Madappura". Principal deity of the temple is Sri Muthappan. The Muthappan is the personification of two divine figures, that is Thiruvappana (Lord Vishnu) and Vellattom (Lord Shiva). The uniqueness of the temple is that it doesn't follow the Brahmanical form of worship as in other Hindu temples in Kerala. The main mode of worship is a ritual enactment of both the characters of Muthappan. This is done through a traditional dance known as Muthappan Theyyam, performed daily by certain qualified individuals at the temple premises.

Fish, Toddy (Country Liquor) and Alcohol are never allowed inside a temple. But these are welcome here. You will find the devotees offering liquor bottles to Muthappan after His performance is over. You will also find some dogs in and around the temple. It disturbs none and vice versa. The dog is believed to be the 'vehicle' of Muthappan. Don't be surprised on the scene of Muthappan consuming some country liquors during performance like Vellattom or Thiruvappana.

Another notable aspect of the temple is free food supply. The moment you reach the temple you are given some snacks with hot tea with less sugar and milk. You are given some coconut slices along with boiled green gram or some other pulses. So before entering into the Sanctum Sanctorum, you need to sit on the benches placed at the entrance area near the temple office. You need not wait long. Within a few minutes of your arrival, the snacks are served. In fact, you even need not ask for it. They keep a watch on the pilgrims and reach you quickly with tea and snacks. Two free meals are also provided at noon and evening.

After having your food, you can go to the office and pay if you have anything to offer as you prayed. Your old offers or new ones, whatever it may be, you can pay cash for the same and get a receipt from the counter. The charge for the offerings is so cheap as you find in the list given below.

You can book anything as you wish. The most preferred ones are Vallattam, Payamkutti and Thiruvappana. If you book some of these offerings in the name of your entire family members also, the cost will be too less while compared to the other temples. Vellattam and Thiruvappana are performed every morning from 5.45 to 8 am. Vellattam is also performed at evening by around 6.30 pm.

The next thing you need to do is to climb down the steps to reach the river and clean your body. After cleaning, enter into the inner premises (Sreekovil or Sanctum Sanctorum) of the temple. Here you won't face such large queue for Darshan (seeing the deity) as you would normally see in other great temples. Pray before Muthappan and put some money, as you please, into the box (Hundi) provided. Vellattam or Thiruvappana is a must watch item and the most sought after one by the devotees. After the performance, devotees queue up before Muthappan and convey their problems to Him. He in return passes some kind words, which gives great relief to the devotees. Muthappan's sudden replies do provide some solace to them and they return happily and hopefully..

Please enquire with the temple management for exact timings.

All are welcome

As the temple welcomes all irrespective of their cast, religion and nationality, people from all walks of life reach here. You can spot even international tourists praying before the Muthappan. Some of them spend a few days and go back to their own destinations with a fresh mind of peace and great relief.

It is believed that if you make a strong prayer here, Muthappan will bless you richly. He will answer you request made through the prayers. If you are unable to reach the temple, you can contract the temple authority over phone or make correspondence. They will send you 'prasadam' by post.

The power of Sri Muthappan is amazing and beyond the scope of a description here. You just be there and find yourself. I also advise you to watch the following Video, which will further update you on the topic. Let Sri Muthappan bless you all!

      Hello,

Free accommodation is available at the temple premises by the temple authority. They give you basic facilities only. But it is safe and reliable for ladies. Just ask them for a room and it is allotted to you free. Besides, there are a few lodges around the temple. But for ladies coming alone, what is fine and safe is make use of the free room by the temple authority.
