Past Lives- some experieces of note
Past Lives- some experiences of note

Perhaps a controversial subject for many, but the idea that we have lived before and will live again in various incarnations is a commonly held belief in many religions. The proof if it is of course difficult from the outset but experience has a profound affect on belief.
I am a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and many years ago when I was practicing I experimented with regression therapy. Commonly this practice is used to bring past traumas or events into light and consciousness, for the patient to deal with these issues. How far you go back is of course determined by when the event occurred.
It is miraculous that even as a young child, we can remember everything that happens to us in minute detail. The human brain is an incredible instrument. During that time and being an inquisitive individual, I did some experimentation of my own, into past lives. I used regression to go back beyond birth to see what would happen. I was flabbergasted with the results.
I performed many regressions over the years and the experience of birth was fairly consistent and the memory of previous life experience was extremely detailed and fascinating. The memory of death was particularly clear. What I found also was the manner of death from a previous life was consistent with fears and phobias in the present life. In other words we carry certain inherent memories or feelings from past to now. For example my wife at the time could never bare anyone touching her neck or worst putting hands around her neck. She had almost a violent response to it. In regression her previous death was by hanging.
With all the regressions there were details of street names, neighbours, family members and occurrences that had the potential of research. However, many were in the 1700’s or earlier and records would be difficult if not sought in that country. I had not the finances to support such a task, but have always wondered about it.
There have been a few documentaries on past lives that proved beyond doubt the subject knew people and places that they’d never been to and the regression experience was proven beyond doubt. I have seen enough to believe in this idea and adhere to the fact that we indeed live many times. But the concept gets ever more complex.
In my thirties I moved to a small country town in NSW, Australia to pursue a career. While I was there I met some interesting people whose penchant was to explore the spiritual universe. Their studies included astral projection and time travel, investigating past lives and their influence on the present.
This of course fascinated me and I tried to learn as much as I could. If nothing else that period of time taught me to think outside the square, because most of the answers to our questions don’t reside in our human logic and linear thinking.
At the time I was building a structure on my property and one of the new-found friends was a builder and who had taken on my project. It was if I had known the man my whole life and we were instantly close. We worked hard together over months and one particular week, everything just fell apart. Suddenly we were arguing about everything and the anger and rage that was welling inside me was not only completely uncharacteristic but unwarranted.
In the middle of all this, I was woken one night, about 3am. I staggered to the door to find a half-dozen people standing, smiling and wanting a cup of tea. I of course knew them all as part of the group on this spiritual journey, but it was 3am.
I was wrestled into the house and the kettle was on in no time, and we were all sitting in the lounge room sipping tea and I wondering what the hell was going on. John, the spokesperson began to explain.
He was concerned with all the tension and conflict between me and Col, the builder. How did he know? John explained that in a past life we were both commanders of fleets’ of ships at war. At that time we were literally blasting each other; in the heat of battle. I didn’t quite get it, and my expression must have been odd. Then came the crunch!
John explained that time didn’t exist in a line as we accept it, rather happening and coexisting in the now. I was baffled. He went on to say that we incarnate many times and at the same time also. Our souls have many fragments that are experiencing life now, together at different points of time. So experiences can be felt through different incarnation in the present.
It took me a long time to deal with this idea, not easy to get your head around. But since than, I have experienced many relationships with strange feelings, attitudes and biases that defy logic. Many of them have been explained to me, and it makes perfect sense.
I have since chosen to let go of all that, not because I don’t believe it but because I prefer to take life as it comes, on my terms. But it does give you something to think about. I believe that most of the connections we have with people and many of our responses can be based on the memory of the soul. How many times have you recognised and feel profoundly about someone you’ve just met? I think that we are all connected in some way and that life keeps bringing us back together, for whatever reason. But I like to remain open-minded.
In the end I think we are incapable of understanding everything about how life and death works. We can have beliefs and find security in them, but until we die, not much of it will be revealed. Even then; who knows? It’s interesting though. Keeping an open mind is all we can do.
