Poltergeists - Ghosts Or Something Else?

Poltergeists? Or are They?

There have been many TV programs over the years showing various families who have experienced poltergeist activity. A Poltergeist, translated from the German Noisy Ghost is a phenomena of ghostly manifestations that take over a home and can be a frightening experience.

The ghostly attacks can start at any time. The family involved may have lived in the house for many years before the actual phenomenon starts. The spooky activity usually starts off small, building up to terrifying attacks.

Most of the time one of the family will start to notice something strange. For example milk being spilled, or doors beginning to bang open and shut. This is usually put down to natural occurrences such as accidentally knocking the milk over, or someone leaving the door open.

But after a while the person will realise that the amount of things going wrong is really getting out of hand. Say the mother has seen things out of the corner of her eye, or too many objects fall to the floor within a few moments. This is the time when she will start to realise that something isn't quite right. And then the fear starts.

Ghostly Goings On

By the time one of the family realises that something is happening within their home, the other members of the family will start to pick up on the strangeness of the situation and then the panic begins to grip them.

Obviously there are cases when one of the family can be causing the others to react to a completely rational occurrence by causing mass hysteria when really actually nothing is happening.

Most of the time the actual so called Poltergeist Activity is really just wear and tear in the house. For example the stairs creaking at night because of heat or cold causing the components of the wood to contract. Hysteria is a real phenomena and can pass from one person to the next very quickly especially if there are children in the house.

But there are other times when the phenomena is very real. Books fly off the shelves, cups fall to the floor, and in really rare cases fire breaks out in a room that hasn't got anybody in it. Some people even report that they have been thrown across the room, or physically attacked.

So what exactly is going on?

Poltergeist Phenomenon True Stories

In March 2011 a family living in Holbrooks Coventry England, reported that they were living in fear because they were convinced that a ghost had moved a chair across the floor in their bedroom. This wasn't the only phenomena and they stated they were scared stiff.

Lisa Manning is fed up with the ghostly goings on, and her children are petrified. Pots and pans are said to have flown across the kitchen, window blinds keep opening and shutting and all the lights in the house keep switching themselves on and off.

The final straw was the ghost locking them inside their house. Escaping through a window, Lisa stated that she was not going back until something was done about it. A local Priest was called in and gave them all Crucifixes which they wear all the time now.

They have now asked to be moved, and the council was considering it at the time of the reported incident. Lisa set up a video recorder to prove that the Poltergeist existed. You can see the footage below. Real or Fake?

Poltergeist? I Don't Think So!

A Real Poltergeist?

Back in 2006, a Californian family lived the nightmare of a Poltergeist attack. Susan Lewis said that she never realised just how difficult it was to live through something like this. The spooky phenomenon started when Susan and her daughter Jamie began living with Susan's boyfriend and daughter at the house.

After settling in, strange things started to happen. Peanut butter was spilled in the kitchen, and at first they believed it was the cats that had knocked it over. Then things got considerably weirder. Objects around the house started being lined up, bottles of cleaning fluid were dumped on the floor and a horse figurine flew off the side and fell to the ground.

At first Susan thought it was one of the children, maybe trying to get attention because of the new circumstances. But soon the family realised that something strange was going on. Matt, the boyfriend didn't believe a word of it, until one day when Susan decided to make an altar to appease the ghost by placing a small statue of a cat next to some candles. Matt got annoyed and threw the small cat out the door.

Only to turn around and see it back on the altar. After this things only got worse. Fires were set in the house, things got wrecked until one day they had enough and moved out. Sadly the stress caused Susan and Matt to split up. Even though he had seen the evidence in front of him, he still blamed it on the girls. The video below is just a small part of the the phenomenon.

Human Nature

We humans tend to think in a very narrow way when something scares us. Especially over the last hundred years or so ever since the beginning of the Spiritualist movement and a belief in real ghosts.

We have, without realising it become accustomed to listening and watching everything from ghost films, horror programs and everything supernatural.

In other words we have taken all this information into our Psyche and without realising it we access that information when anything similar occurs in our lives.

However modern we may believe we are, there is a part of our minds that is still purely ancestral. Whether we believe this or not, the fact is that as our ancestors believed in the other world, and placed great store by giving gifts to the gods. And we are still very much like that today.

Unless someone is scientifically minded, they will always believe that the Poltergeist is in fact a real ghost. And the more they believe, the more the family will take it as true. And therefore the phenomena will carry on.

So is there another explanation? Well yes, many in fact.

Poltergeist or a Troubled Child?

Open Your Mind To Other Possibilites.

What To Do If You Believe You Are Under Psychic Attack By A Poltergeist.

The problem is fear. When we are confronted by something so frightening that we do not understand it, we automatically go into the fight and flight mode. This is a biological reaction that affects our bodies. Adrenaline will be released into the muscles of your body and you will react by trying to escape as soon as you possibly can. Your mind will centre on the one thing you need. Escape. The trouble starts when you try to think rationally. Adrenaline in this case will overtake your will to consider other possibilities. So what must you do?

  • Think! Not when you are under attack, but when the phenomena has stopped. Get a piece of paper and a pen, sit down and make a list.
  • Plan. What are you going to do? First of all write down the common sense approach first. You cannot leave home. Where would you go? First things first. Start at the beginning.
  • Question. The first thing you should do is sit down and discuss it with your family. Is there someone else in the house or street who is playing games with you? Is it possible its one of your own children? Are they having problems that could be making them do this to get attention? Are they having trouble at school? Need your help and are afraid to ask? Its very possible as this may be the only way they can interact with you.
  • Search. Take each room one step at a time. Look for rats, cats stray dogs, or even stray people! You may have a burglar, or even worse, maybe they are hiding out in your house. Check the attic, and the cellar, look under beds search cupboards and just about everywhere else someone or something could be hiding.
  • Open Your Mind. There are other possibilities apart from Poltergeist activity. There is something called Telekinesis that has been more or less proved. I say more or less as anything beyond conventional science is a tricky business to study. But its said that children and adults have an energy surrounding them which is caused by brain activity.
  • Sometimes in rare cases, if a child is unhappy for any reason they can actually lose control of this energy and send it out and cause objects to move. This could well be the cause of the phenomenon. The best way to see which child or even adult may be the culprit, is to send each person away for the night to see when and where it happens. This should give you some indication of which person is the culprit. Even though they may not realise they are the actual problem.
  • Poison. There are many cases where hallucinations can be caused by leaking gas. Check out all gas outlets. Monitor for Carbon Monoxide poisoning, even a small amount could cause hallucinations. Too much is deadly, but if its only a small amount this could be the thing that is messing with your judgement. Think about whether you have bought new furniture, carpets or appliances. Certain chemicals in the cloth or flooring could be causing you all to imagine the so called Psychic phenomenon or Poltergeist.
  • Check Records. Go to your local library and see who lived in your house before you. Have they had similar experiences? If not, then it must be something you are doing or have in your house. If they did have a poltergeist, then maybe you need to look deeper into your houses location. Are you on a strong natural radioactive line? Is there something about the area that can cause a malady of the senses? Overhead cables for example? People have been known to experience dizziness and ringing in the ears because of the cables causing an electrical discharge.

An Ordinary House With Troubled Residents

homesonarran.co.uk
homesonarran.co.uk

Most Likely Scenario.

The most likely cause of your Poltergeist is going to be one of the children doing it. Whether it is because they are scared or frightened of a particular situation, maybe bullying at school, or even a change of house. Have you recently moved in with someone, changing the whole dynamics of your relationship with your kids? Take all this on board before you decide it really is ghostly goings on.

All these things could well be the cause of the so called Poltergeist Activity. After doing all of the above, if you still cannot find a normal explanation then there is only one more thing you can do. Move!

Or if you are brave call in a Priest or Holy Man. Maybe there really is a Noisy Ghost, Poltergeist or Spirit trying to get your attention! Good Luck.

Interesting list of things it could be, including live intruders. (I'll take a ghost over that any day!) I have often wondered about houses that are built on old battlefields or cemeteries. Often we don't even have a true record of what came before.

I have not had a personal experience like this, but I think many strange things are not able to be explained in any really rationale way. My great grandfather could do telekinesis, and this was reportedly seen my many relatives to my mother when she was young. He caused a table to move across the room with a baby laying in the middle of the table. There were about 4 people that saw this happen. This is not something that has occurred by any other family member, but interesting none the less. I love Will's story. Very interesting.

I grew up in a Haunted House. At the time I was just a child and thought I was just seeing things because of an overactive imagination. Later, as an adult, I found out that the house was built on an Indian graveyard. I also found out that my family was seeing, hearing and feeling the same things that I was. My Dad actually told them to "Go away" (something a co-worker told him to do). He said that after he did that, they never bothered him again. The "Ghosts" looked just like Indians, with face paint and feathered headdresses. I saw them all the time in the upstairs, where our bedrooms were, but never in any other part of the house. It was a scary. They would look in my window, appear in my closet and under the bed. I could "feel" them every time I was upstairs in that house. What a scary childhood it was, for sure!

"There is something called Telekinesis that has been more or less proved."

Oh, please, do tell me where this is proven to exist.... even more or less. You seem to be skeptical (as am I) and then come out with something like this. Just because it has a name and some think it exists, doesn't mean it has been proved.

      Hi, Nell

I love the way you tackle this subject and provide a wealth of interesting information. I have to admit that I am one of the world's biggest sceptics when it comes to the paranormal but there is one experience from my teens that has never been explained.

I was about 14, maybe 13. I was at a family party/gathering (can't remember but think it was New Year) and I was alone in the dining room, having noticed that one of my uncles had left his cigarettes in there... I had just lighted up when there was a bloody great crash. Within seconds, family rushed in and although I was caught red-handed smoking, that wasn't their immediate concern.

There was a glass table at one side of the room. The glass had fallen right through the frame and a knife and fork lay on the undamaged glass, on the floor, in the shape of a cross. There had been no knife and fork near the table and I was at the other end of the room. My family knew I had no time to get away from the table after the crash before they came in. The spooky part is that my uncles tried and tried to fit the undamaged glass through that table frame without success. The glass was (of course) too wide.

The positive is that I was never pulled up for nicking the fag or smoking - but could it be that I had a guardian angel poltergeist trying to stop me smoking? I'll never know the answer to that, I don't suppose, but it always makes me wonder and hold back from dismissing inexplicable experiences, however seemingly bizarre.

      Enjoyed the read very much.

      Gordon

I am truly starting to believe that much of the poltergeist activity we see can be attributed to thought forms of a disturbed or angry teen or even adult. These thought forms manifest themselves and are able to actually manipulate energy and space. I believe that if the person who is experiencing the manifestation of these thought forms continues to focus on the "poltergeist"...it only feeds it and makes the situation worse. Great article, Nell!

In Victorian times mediums used to organise seances and had an 'assistant' to move things, tap windows or 'raise' the dead. These teams were exposed as charlatans usually and the gravy train turned into the greasy tray.

I've never experienced poltergeists so don't know if they're real or not. Usually, when something moves of its own accord here in Southern California, there's a earthquake, lol. The YouTube video with the moving chair is unfortunately not very convincing because there could be a string tied of one of the hidden parts of the legs, which is what is moving the chair around. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Here's another thought-provoker from Nell Rose. Interesting, and like our friend tillsontitan from the Big Apple, I think the jury's still in conference. There has to be a reason, physical or theoretical, for all these goings-on. I suppose scientifically they can be disproved. Never having been affected by any of these phenomena - what was that? Pardon me, I've got to see what that was in the kitchen... Something scrawled on the wall in tomato sauce (how did that get from the fridge?) What is it... It reads: 'Get out before it's too late'. What's that mean? Oh well, that's been wiped off. Back to writing this - Oops, the writing's back again. Brown sauce this time. Must be a PG with a taste for the spice of life!

Not to scare you but in 2009 I had the wors experience by moving temporarily into a House that was built around 1935. All was fine until Something struck my head at 3 p.m. one day. I was laying down on my bed and taking a nap. The strange force or ghostic energy was twisiting my brain literally with no mercy. Either I was supposed to die or some demons just tried to stop my life. The worst thing was that I couldn't scream or move. Look a little up and asked my angels to stop this torture. After long 5 seconds stopped. I think lots of deceased have been held in limbo and needed some prayer. Thanks for the hub!

Well, Nell, this one got me reminiscing, and boy, do I have a ton of paranormal experiences! But, my favorite remains the ghost that I had in the Hotel Savoy in London in 1985.

I'd no sooner got comfy in this beautiful room, that the window, with nubs that corresponded to holes(locked), flew open! I thought, well, it's just jet lag, so I'll take a nice long bath. Before I got up the steps to the bathroom, (yep, it was a lovely room), that the water turned on, Full bore! I wasn't afraid... more bemused, but I was getting tired, so I laid crosswise on the bed for a few minutes, when it happened again! I asked the lady downstairs if the place had ghosts. She said, "Certainly Not!" "Not at the Savoy!" Well, to make the story short, the water turned on multiple times, and the window flew open multiple times, but I was never afraid, more delighted than anything... love the hub, and isn't Will a scamp? Love yaz, and always, a great read! lily

Hi Emma, thanks for reading, I have grown up with certain psychic abilities, and unlike a lot of psychics I do try and see the scientific side of it, somethings can never be explained though! lol!

I'm just grateful that none of these things has never happened to me. Great suggestions for investigating the problem, too.

Hi Nell - this is an interesting topic. I have never had any real ghostly experiences, but in a couple of situations in the past I have thought I have 'felt' things and seen things. They were in places where ghosts were said to be (although I didn't know it at the time), but looking back at them, they both could have had logical explanations.

I guess we won't really know for sure, but it's quite reassuring to know that most things may have explanations. Some of these I would never had known about.

I like the way you kept this open, seeing both sides. Very scary! Up and awesome though :)

Hi Nell. I love your straight forward approach to this. I do believe in ghosts, so suppose sometimes they can be a bit naughty..or a lot. Your check list and reasoning was excellent though. Just thinking back to one of your previous hubs...didn´t something unexplainable and very scary happen to you ? Great hub Nell voted up etc.

Nell, I'm an interested skeptic when it comes to the supernatural because I so want to believe in the hereafter. I wish Lisa's video had gone on a bit longer and we had maybe seen things levitating rather than just moving across the floor. If it was in my home, it would freak me out slightly I think.

      Nell,

Very good hub! I've had my own experiences without a fear factor being present. Too many, actually. Hopefully, they're all behind me now. Oh, Monday, you're featured in the newscast. Hope you don't mind a bit of joking. Talk at you later. Great Job! Rich

Hi Nell. Did I ever tell you about my paranormal ability? Sometimes I can do dematerializations. For some reason, it works especially well with chocolate chip cookies.

      Voted up and interesting.

There was a poltergeist in a small factory who used to throw handfuls of money onto the floor. The money would appear out of thin air. I would love to have one like that. He would never be exorcised.

Thanks for a very interesting hub Nell. You covered the subject very well.

Nell...scary!! I love the checklist. And I feel thankful for living in an apartment....at least there are fewer places to check!! Most of the time, though, it is people playing games with you....and having fun doing it. Thanks for an interesting hub which I will share!!

Hard to tell from that video what's really happening. Something like that is so easily faked. As someone who has experienced poltergeist activity, I'll be the first to admit it's hard to know what the heck is going on half the time. You don't know if you should believe it's really happening or not. There are so many explanations, but sometimes none that really make sense. I liked your checklist for sorting it out.

Nell, I live literally 2 towns away from where the Amityville Horror took place and still am on the face as to what really happened there. I also do and don't believe about paranormal activity and am truly on the fence. Liked how you lamed on the kids though lol! Seriously very detailed and great article for Halloween time, which is right around the corner. Nhave voted, shared and tweeted too.

Well it is for sure to be out by end of next week, I am going through Lulu to have a physical copy and this I guess I will do the Ebook too but I have waited so long, just want that book in my hands! Even if it is the only one that sells lol, sure you know what I mean. So Nell Rose is what I have, but I could use your real name, and England or a place in England? You can email me if you like. I just never read it I don't think of you so it seemed the thing to do! Though that poem if you rem is long I just wanted it included, but I am proud of the book and have quite a few no one has read. Most one page or shorter.

Hi tills, thanks for reading, I do believe in this sort of psychic attack if every avenue has been checked, but I do think its more likely to be telekinesis, but its fascinating though, as long as it doesn't happen in my house! lol! yes Amityville was a scary thing, whatever caused it, makes me shudder even now! thanks so much, nell

In my mind, the jury's still out. I do and I don't believe. I heard many stories from my parents involving ghosts but they weren't destructive...a bit noisy perhaps but never destructive.

Not sure if I believe or not what happened in Amityville. Of course the murders that took place in the house add a good background. The debate about the veracity of 112 Ocean Avenue continues. Great subject for a hub Nell.

      Voted up, useful, and interesting.

Hi Jackie, yes I know what you mean, its best to let it die down if it really is something supernatural. I haven't looked at yahoo lately I will have to go have a look. And Wow! a poem? thats amazing, thank you! yes I don't mind if you add where I am from, where can I see the book?

I just commented on a hub like this where a hubber here has her mom visit her. I have had a couple experiences so I do know there is something but I don't think we should encourage it. I just ignored what happened to me, and it didn't scare me amazingly and it never happened again.

Did you see all the Diana pictures in memory at yahoo? Loved them. Am dedicating that long poem in my book about her to you, hope you don't mind. Want me to say where you are from?

Oh...and haven't we been here three years by now? It feels like four!

Hi effer, I did a similar one about ghosts, you got a great memory! lol! I do think a lot of the poltergeist activity is really just one of the kids, thats why I mentioned all the different reasons, It started after watching the paranormal witness program the other night, and I sat there thinking, oh for goodness sake! lol! yes the Amityville horror was a scary film but I remember reading that the real events were entirely different! oh well they needed some money I suppose so the film had to be scary stuff, thanks so much as always, nell

Nell Rose.....Did you write a similar hub a while back or is this a Part II for you? I don't know why I think I read this by you before, but obviously, there is no comment here from me.

Your hub has made me recall the movie "Poltergeist" which I saw so many years ago.....and it seems I'm reading so many hubs involved in this particular topic or related to it......really, Nell? that NOW, I am convinced that one of my departed loved ones is attempting to communicate with me.

I am not normally of this mind set. I have a tendency to rationalize and reason-away the curious activity.

I was especially interested in your very nicely listed and detailed suggestions to consider if concerned your home has a poltergeist.

I will assume you are familiar with the well-publicized case of Amityville, in my State of NY.... There is a book and a movies was made "The Amityville Horror." I always felt the only truth to that was that it was a damned good scam on the part of the now very wealthy family who lived in the house!! Wonderful hub, Nell! Up and shared

Hi Will, lol! thats brilliant! what a great idea, wish I had thought of that with my brother! your poor sister! she was probably totally spooked out, I would love to have seen her face when you told her! thanks so much for reading, and nice to see you! nell

My first job, many years ago, was repairing radios in a repair shop. My old boss gave me lots of old radios that were unwanted so I had a great collection, but I refused to give my big sister one...sibling rivalry and all that.

In the end, she complained to Dad, and he made me give her one. I immediately began planning revenge, as all little brothers are wont to do. I ran some very small wires along the baseboards between her room and mine. One end went to the speaker of the confiscated radio in her room and the other end went to a microphone in my room.

Late at night, when everyone was asleep, I would throw a battery into the circuit and begin a low moaning sound in the mike, which then emanated from the radio she took from me. She awoke with a shriek, and Dad came running. I, of course, was sound asleep and innocent. That happened at all hours, and for weeks on end. Poor Dad thought she was crazy!

In the end, she made me take that damned old ‘haunted’ radio out of her room. I did it, but Dad was watching me suspiciously.

I finally admitted to it many years later, and Dad told me that he just knew I was at the bottom of it, but didn't know how! He thought it was hilarious!

I loved my days as a poltergeist.
