Pray for God’s Mission in Light of the Old Testament-Part 1
We Have a Choice
The Reason for the Mission
The world is filled with all kinds of problems. If you don’t believe me, just go to your news source of choice and you will see what is wrong with the world. Some of the problems that come to my mind are fatherlessness, violence, crime, abortion, and murder. This is just a sampling. What comes to your mind? I bet that others came to your mind that I didn’t mention. This means we know that the world isn’t what it should be.
The world started our perfect, but then we humans messed it up. We need to be honest that we are all part of the problem. One thing that the Bible makes clear to us, is that it is humans that have fallen. This is the reason why God is on mission. He is on mission because he is trying to win us back to himself. This hub is going to focus on early chapters in Genesis and how they can help us find ways to pray for God’s mission.
Genesis three tells the story of the first sin and God’s judgement because of it. Many of you have read the story, but I think a refresher is ok here. The scene is the Garden of Eden. The serpent comes and deceived Eve in having fruit from the forbidden tree. Adam is with her and he doesn’t stop her from eating, instead he ate from the tree as well. He chose the creation over the Creator. Isn’t that what we do even today? We choose the creation, us, over the Creator.
My prayer, after this section from Genesis is that we as Christians will be examples of what it means to choose the Creator over the creation. If we can live this out, then two things will happen. Some non-Christians will hate us because they hated God first. Others will come to faith because they see what is possible. I don’t know about you, but I want to see people come to faith. We need help to choose the Creator instead of the creation. In order for this to happen, we need to pray because we can’t do this on our own. Prayer is about us connecting to God and as we connect, we can choose Him over ourselves.
The First Murder
It Get's Worse
After reading chapter 3 of Genesis, sin just keeps on going. In chapter 4, we read how sin wants to have master over us. It comes to the point where God regretted to have made man (Genesis 6.6). The rest of chapter 6 of Genesis is the story of Noah’s Ark. The story of God passing judgement on sin and showing grace. Grace to one family so that the human race could continue. God is amazing!
This leads me to pray for God’s grace to continue. God does and will pass judgement. But we need His grace. My desire is for my friends and neighbors to see God’s grace. This, my readers, takes prayer. Not only for grace to abound, but also for non-Christians to see that grace. Grace is one reason why Jesus hasn’t returned yet. God doesn’t want anyone to perish, so He is slow in returning to judge. Non-Christians might not understand this concept, so we pray. Pray that they will start to understand that Jesus is coming back and God is giving them time to believe. What a great thought! If they can see that, it would be because the Holy Spirit opens their eyes to what God is doing. Let’s be praying that God opens their eyes.
There is Hope
Go back with me to Genesis three and read vs 15. This is a famous verse because it is the first one that mentions the coming of the Messiah, Jesus. There will be enmity between the Seed of the women and the serpent. The serpent will strike the Seed’s heel and he will crush the serpent's head. Even after the first sin, God is telling us that He has a plan, a plan to bring us grace. The plan that is going to take away our sin. We follow an amazing God, don’t you think?
As Christians, it is our job to talk about this plan because it is great news. I encourage you to pray about how you will do this. Here is a list to help you pray:
Pray that God will give you opportunities to share what Jesus has done in your life personally.
Pray for the non-Christians in your life
Pray that you will have opportunities to build relationships with non-Christians so that you can share the love of God.
I would also pray for missionaries around the world that God is highlighting to you. I pray for a church planter in Japan.
Who is God asking you to pray for? I would love to read it in the comment section so we can send up a prayer for them.
The Death that Brought Hope
Pray, Pray, Pray
Thanks for starting this journey with me throughout the Old Testament. My prayer is that you will understand God’s mission more and that you would pray for more to be saved. In the meantime, please pray for me as I write the rest of the hubs in this series. Then, pray that God will give you the strength to share your faith. Finally, pray for those that are close to you to become believers.
Let’s pray early and often for revival to come.
