Praying for Men: Part 4
Making a Difference in Boy Scouts
Making a Difference
The best part of following God is having a purpose. Over the years, God has shown me what that is in many different ways. He has spoken to me directly, through sermons, others, and reading His Word. I want you to understand one thing with purpose in life. There are two types: One is the universal purpose for your life. That is clearly spelled out for you in the Bible and it is for everyone to follow. The Holy Spirit will never tell you to do something that is contrary to what the Bible says.
When I think of purpose in life, I think about the idea of making a difference in the world. If we are honest with ourselves, we want to make a difference for the better. We all have a passion and the world is in need of changing. The key here is finding out where those two meet. That is where prayer comes in. It is about seeking God’s answer to that question. When you find that, you have found your purpose.

Discerning Universal Purpose
The Bible is a spiritual book. Yes, it does express history of the nation of Israel and the surrounding nations. The most important part of the book is learning about God and how He wants us to act. Reading the Bible should not be done only to get facts. It is to be read as part of your way to spend time with God and listening to Him. When you read the Bible to determine what is God’s purpose for all of us, you need to go into it with prayer.
Here are my suggestions on how best to pray while reading the Bible
Take a deep breath: In other words, remember that you are spending time with God when you open that book. God wrote it, so he is speaking through it.
Pray before reading: A simple invitation for God to join is all you need.
Pray back what you are reading: If you don’t understand what you are reading, ask God. He wants you to understand this part of your life and His Word.
Pray for strength: As you learn how God wants you to act and participate in the world, pray that He will give you the strength and the wisdom.
You can’t go wrong when praying as you read God’s Word. He doesn’t want it to come back to Him void, so He is going to answer your questions. Plus, God desires us to be followers of His Word. He will help you, I have no doubt.
1 Timothy 2.3-4
3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
The Purpose Just for You
1 Corinthians 12 has a list of gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to Christians. Only Jesus has all of them. The ones that the Holy Spirit gives you are clues into what your purpose is. The things you need to look into are your passions, skills, and experience. God is always molding you and preparing you for His plans and purposes. Remember, while he is preparing you, you are already in His plans and will for your life. The key here is to trust Him. If you struggle to trust Him, then I suggest that you pray about it and ask Him to help you trust Him. There has been a few times I was wondering what God was doing and I had to learn to trust Him. I believe that with prayer, you can learn the same thing and God wants to help you.
Some of you are wondering, “how can I find out what my spiritual gifts are?” Well, the first step is prayer. I also suggest doing a spiritual gift survey. There are a lot online and most of them are free. I would also talk with your friends at church and ask them what they see. Since this blog is about praying for men and their purpose, pray for the men in your life that they will discover their gift and would want to know what their gifts are. Maybe even suggest to them to take a survey and encourage in the areas that you see.
Above all, pray! As you look at all areas, your gifts, experience, passions, skills, and God to show men their purpose and to live it out. I’ve read a quote that the goal is to find where your passions are and the world’s needs and combine them. Ultimately, this purpose leads to you participating in God’s mission, which is one of the universal purposes.
Praying for God's Mission
There are two things that I love more than anything else, prayer and God’s mission. I may earn my living outside of that (part of my purpose is this bi-vocation life), but there is nothing more that I would rather do. When I look at my gifts and passions and experience and skills, it all points to what I do as a volunteer Vice President with C-Rev. My role is to support the organization and support churches participating in God’s mission. Some of that is promoting prayer meetings and praying for churches right here in my home state of Maine. If you want to be part of the Maine Prayer Team praying for God’s mission and the church in Maine, send me an email at email@example.com.
As for my other purposes in life, I’m thankful for the Bible. By spending time in prayer reading it, I get reminded of how I need to act as a husband, father, employee, etc. By prayer, I can do all things because Christ strengthens me. I believe that this helps others make decision to follow Jesus.
