Psychics, Mediums and Fortunetellers

Updated on September 17, 2016

Many today believe in psychics, mediums, horoscopes, tarot cards, astrology, fortune tellers, palm readings, and seances. But what evidence exists to prove their authenticity? On one hand there are true believers, on the other, scoffers and skeptics. Where can one go to find the true answers?

There is only one reliable source. The holy Bible. The Bible gives us no reason to believe the deceased can contact us or give advice and guidance. The Bible delves deeply into this subject.

So, if the deceased cannot contact us, how do mediums, and psychics get their information? Many have been exposed as frauds and charlatans. So-called psychics can gain much information about somebody through every day means such as using caller ID or the internet. A psychic can get names, addresses, dates of birth, dates of marriage, family members, etc. But what about those seeming to know things they shouldn't be able to. Where does this information come from? The Bible tells us it comes from Satan and his demons. And the Bible strongly condemns those that dabble in spiritualism and the occult.

2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

2Co 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Acts 16:16-18 describes a fortune teller who was able to predict the future until the apostle Paul rebuked a demon out of her.

Act 16:17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

Act 16:18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

Whether you are dealing with so called ghosts, mediums or psychics, the only way to know if you are being deceived is to know the word of God. Test the spirits to see if they are of God.

1Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

1Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

1Jn 4:5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

1Jn 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

In Matthew 14:26 when Jesus is walking on the water the disciples are afraid because they think he is a "ghost.” This proves even in their day spirits were a known phenomenon. Some living at the time of Christ believed in them just as some do today. However, this doesn't make them real There were lying spirits then as well as today.

Jesus never taught ghosts were real, or spirits of loved ones. To the contrary he taught when we die we are either with God in heaven, or awaiting final judgment.

Leviticus 19:31'Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.' (NIV)

Leviticus 20:27 "Men and women among you who act as mediums or psychics must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense." (NLT)

Deuteronomy 18:10-13 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the LORD your God. (NIV)

Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

1Ch 10:13 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it;

1Ch 10:14 And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

God tells us there are spirits, familiar spirits, unclean spirits and demons. They roam the earth not only harassing, but listening and watching, looking for opportunities to communicate with the living. God warns us not to consult with them, and doing so is an abomination unto him.

Because these spirits are all around, some follow us, hearing our phone conversations and dialogues we have in our everyday lives. Is it so surprising then they would be able to "predict" what is in store for us?

God tells us when the body dies, our spirit will either be carried to Heaven by angels, or sent to Hell to suffer torment (Luke 16:22,23).

Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

The Bible clearly teaches God will take vengeance upon those who die in their sins.

2Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

2Th 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

It should be clear from these Scriptures spirits of the dead cannot return to speak with us, nor send messages through psychic mediums.

Most who are able to “view” the future or “remember” things from the past are getting such information from another source. Demons and evil spirits have existed far longer than man. They remember the past because they experienced it. They also have understanding of future prophetic events. However, like Satan, they will lie or deceive.

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Genesis chapter 3 shows us how spiritual deception can happen. The root of all occult teaching is found in verses 1 through 5, the lies Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Gen 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

Gen 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

God’s Word is clear we should never seek out these spirits. The Bible has much to say about psychic phenomena and it's important to understand spiritual activity or powers can not only be used for discerning needed information but also to deceive us.
