The Malevolent Quija Board - Evil Encounters

Updated on August 26, 2013

The Ouija Board

Ouija boards have been the subject of countless books and movies. Many of us have dabbled with it - for the most part with zero activity. Neither have most of us had any ill effects. Why then should this odd looking contraption have such a dangerous reputation?

Even yet there is no real answer to that question. Many paranormal researchers and psychics will simply say that the board opens up portals or doorways allowing lower or evil entities to come through.

Irrespective of why paranormal phenomena can manifest while using the ouija board, in some cases the effects can be terrifying.

Ouija Board Manifestations

There are thousands of stories from people all over the world, telling disturbing and frightening stories about their experiences with the ouija board. The accounts are all unique but at the same time there is also a strange similarity. Further more, a common thread is not only a sense of discernible evil during some sittings, but that this continues for some time after the session has finished.

Southampton, UK - 1997.

Two work colleagues were spending the night at an old hotel in Southampton. After dining out with their husbands - who fell asleep - both ladies met later in the hotel bar for a drink. It was late but two of the staff who had finished work invited them to sit down. The two workers had been arguing about the hotel's haunted reputation. It was at this point that one of the ladies suggested holding a séance.

The ouija board was made up from scrabble letters, a table and an upturned glass. They began the session with the usual “Is anyone there?” As time passed it didn't seem like anything would happen.

Then one of the ladies described a sensation:

"It was as if a haze surrounded us…not a visible haze, just the feeling of one. This is when I suspected something was about to happen."

The glass then began to move. The question was asked “Who are you?”

Interestingly the surname of one of the hotel staff came through on the board. At this time the person in question had actually removed his finger from the glass. Howevedr, his name was again formed by the glass moving towards the appropriate letters. The group at this point this time were becoming slightly nervous.

One of the ladies suddenly asked - and to this day she does not know why:

“Is there a God?”

The glass began to move as if gliding, forming a continual figure of '8' as it did so. Then whatever was controlling the glass seemed to become angry. The glass moved violently, knocking the letters off the table onto the floor. Needless to say the group were terrified and abruptly ended the session.

What happened next is a frightening account of what ouija board sessions can produce. This is an account of what happened to one of the ladies taking part, later on in the night.

"...some time later (I can’t really remember how long), something occurred that I can only put down to messing with the Ouija.

I felt restless on this particular evening and stayed up quite late into the early hours of the morning. Eventually I decided to take myself off to bed. On entering the bedroom, I bent over the bed to climb in when suddenly something struck me hard in the back. I sensed instantly the strike was not from a human and I lay wheezing and unable to scream. I just waited. I then began raising myself up — it hit me again in the back, but much harder this time.

I sensed evil surrounding me and I slowly turned my head to face whatever it was. But it was too late — it hit me again in the back… striking me harder…it felt like it was inside my body now. I could hardly breathe and I now realised I was being possessed…or even about to die.

I prayed to God in my mind, and began raising myself up again. Immediately I felt what can only be described as a pulling sensation and then I fell on the bed…’it’ had gone.

A presence of good seemed to fill the room for around a minute and I knew without any doubt that my prayer had saved me. All fear left me and as I lay there. I thought about the question I asked during the séance… “Is there a God?”… I had been given the answer and I have never stopped believing in God since!"

Dangerous ouija boards?

A nasty ouija board experience

Mary and Jim, who had recently moved into their new home, had close friends staying with them. They had a happy couple of days together visiting the area.

The night before Mary and Jim’s friends were due to return to their own home, the group visited the local pub. Unfortunately a fight erupted in the bar and their night out finished sooner than expected.

They arrived back at Mary and Jim’s house and had a couple of more drinks while laughing and talking about their younger days.

Sometime later they decided to have a ouija board session. It had been many years since they had 'played' even although they were convinced that, as in previous years, nothing much would happen.

The two women set up a small round table and cut out letters of the alphabet, numbers 1-10 as well as the words 'yes' and 'no'. The men fixed drinks for everyone and brought a spare glass to use as a planchette.

As expected they sat around the table waiting for something to happen. After almost half an hour of silence from the board, they had decided to call it a night, when suddenly the glass moved. The women giggled, accusing the men of pushing it. The men both denied this. The glass moved again, at first slowly, then more easily. Mary grabbed a pen and notepad and started to jot down the letters the glass went to. At first it seemed to be random letters with no meaning, but eventually a message of sorts seemed to come through.

Only a few words were finally dictated by the board, they were - "I am not" and "die". Jim's friend turned to the others and stated that this was not funny and that if anyone was making up the words to stop it now. However, looking at their faces, he knew no one was.

Suddenly they heard a cracking sound like electricity, followed by a stench of burning. Startled they jumped to their feet puzzled and uneasy. They could not figure out where the noise had come from or what was causing the burning smell. They decided to stop the game and removed the letters and glass. Jim lifted the small table they had used. He immediately shouted to the others to look - on the underside of the table there was a large scorched area that had been present previously. Not only that but curious scratch marks were also present across the part that had been burned. Mary said that they were like animal claw marks.

Shocked, they immediately took they table outside, after chopping it up, they set fire to it and threw the letters and glass onto the burning heap.

However the strange events continued for the next two weeks. Here are just a few of the incidents that occurred:

  • On waking up in the morning things would be moved. Especially two pictures that hung in the lounge - they would be angled, and one was almost upside down. This happened on two occasions.
  • Knocking and scraping sounds were heard by both Mary and Jim at night when going to bed.
  • The house developed cold spots. This was unusual, for although it was an older house, it was always extremely warm.
  • Jim is adamant that on at least two occasions he saw, what he calls, 'black things' darting about in the hallway. Mary states that she didn't see these shadows but did feel she was constantly being watched. In addition, she states that on waking up about 4am one morning she saw to pinpricks of light on the near wall. Mary describes them as being like two very small eyes that just seemed to melt into the wall.

Neither Mary nor Jim had any particular religion, but researched on the internet for any kind of advice. They found a 'white witch' who agreed to come and cleanse the house.

Since the cleansing nothing of any note has taken place but for Mary and Jim their days of 'playing' with the ouija board were over.

Common phenomena with ouija boards

Below is a summary of the most common phenomena that can occur when ouija board sessions turn nasty:

Spirit Encounters

Frequently, the alleged spirits that come through the board begin by being friendly and protective. However, this often changes into negative behaviour such as:

  • telling lies
  • foul language
  • abusive and threatening communications

There have been a few accounts where people seemed to have been induced to abandon family, friends and career after following instructions from a ouija board entity.

Some people claim that the ouija board, has been the cause of people committing suicide. However, there is no direct evidence for this.

There are other claims of ouija board entities causing fatal accidents. For the most part these really should be put down to coincidence since the evidence is not that compelling.

Spirit Attachment

This should not be confused with possession. Spirit attachment is where a human or non-human spirit has latched onto the auric energy of a person.

This is alleged to have taken place to some people who have used the ouija board. Sometimes the spirit or entity can be benign. However, more frequently the possession would seem to be caused by either a human or non-human entity with evil intent. Possession does not always occur immediately after the ouija board session but some time after.

Classic paranormal phenomena

Paranormal phenomena frequently occurs due to using a ouija board. The most common manifestations are:

  • poltergeist activity
  • scratching, rapping, voices
  • cold spots
  • 'shadow' people
  • odours and stenches of unknown origin
  • mysterious lights/orbs, unexplained mists
  • crackling like electricity, objects being scorched/burned with no apparent cause

Physical attacks

Direct physical attacks are also fairly common - scratches and bruises being the most frequent.

Burning a ouija board

There have also been many accounts of people destroying the ouija board in order to get rid of whatever it has attracted, but to no avail. In some cases the destruction of the board seems to have caused an increase in paranormal activity.

Many people believe that to burn the ouija board is the best method to get rid of negative energy. However, many accounts relate that burning the board actually made matters worse.

More paranormal manifestations

Paranormal activity that seems to have arisen due to using the ouija board is not always confined to the place where the session took place. People have frequently reported the sense that they have been followed home - or even to work.

In addition they may also experience other paranormal activity within their own homes even although the session did not take place there.

I hope you've found this hub of interest and if you have any stories you would like to share, please do so in the comments section.

    Hi ssingam,

Many thanks again for your interesting response. Just to clarify, I don't use the ouija board at all for spirit communication, but I've always had a fascination for possible paranormal events that may take place due to using it. In this respect it was far easier to trace people who had, had bad experiences than those who had good ones.

This leads on to your interesting observations and research into the mind set of people using the board. Yes of course if you use the board with a clear, confident mind with positive thoughts and protection, then - just going from my own personal experiences, (not with the ouija), nothing can harm you and that I believe 200%. However, if you look at the majority of the negative ouija experiences, people are often under the influence of alcohol, show no respect, fool around and goad any spirits that might be around. Alternatively you get the young ones experimenting with no idea how to protect themselves or close down properly afterwards. Its hardly surprising then that people will find the board a frightening experience.

In light of your fascinating experiences with the board, I think part of the ouija problem is resolved. It does depend on the thoughts and emotions of those participating whether the experience is good or bad.

I was also interested to read your view on Z0Z0 and it's quite a refreshing belief you have on this aspect of the so called, ouija board demon. It reminds me of an alleged 'demon' that is suppose to reside in the Blair Street Vaults in Edinburgh - I live in Fife not far from the city. Apparently people have been scratched, pushed and so on. It wasn't until psychic David Wells visited the area that he maintained that the 'demon' was nothing of the kind, it was an ancient Earth spirit simply protecting its area. However, because it's a tourist attraction, most folks (including the TV show David Wells worked for) didn't want to hear that. Having a 'demon' is much more exciting for the tourists and tv viewers, so a 'demon' it has remained. I have to say, and please excuse my language, it really pisses me off big time when this kind of deception goes on just to fool visitors.

Hello Seeker7, I don't think ZoZo is bad at all, in fact I think he may just be an ancient entity that loves to communicate. He has only graced us with his presence once and we asked him to speak in our recorder. He said No. Lol.

Before I get to my point, I should tell you I built a custom Ouija table with a 15 watt amp and speaker inside with modulation control. The table also has a built in KII for emf readings. This is Ouija 2.0 for the new century. Lol.

Here's my point on getting good or bad spirits. The environment and individuals mindset have a lot to do with which spirits come through. On Halloween we decorated our Ouija room with 10 or 12 life size zombies. These were movie quality zombies. We then Ouija and only got bad spirits come through. We dismissed one and another came, and another including Mama, Nyoz and Mazaz. They made no qualms about saying how bad they were. When asked why today only bad spirits are here, Nyoz told us he loved the zombies. We packed the zombies away.

Our Ouija sessions are filled with bright light, positive thinking, and flowers adorn the table. We have spoke to departed loved ones and many good spirits whom have physically touched us, speak into our recorders and help us get in touch with loved ones.

I suggest you try Ouija again without any fear in your mind. It is the New Divinity. Be well.

Hi ssingam, you've made very good points and like others their experiences with the ouija board has not been negative as such - although I was surprised at zozo being complacent. Others however, haven't been so luck and they have genuinely no idea about things such as spirit attachment etc. It's a rude and scary initiation for some.

  • ssingam profile image

I don't think it's burning the board that causes more activity. It's the fact that you don't want to communicate anymore, hence activity increases to get your attention. The board is just that, a board. You can make one out of a piece of paper and a sharpie. The planchette is the true nature of Ouija. Also being followed home is part and parcel when spirit chasing, so if you are into paranormal, get used to it. I practice Ouija and even talked to zozo last night. Nothing negative happened, the three spirits that came through were nice and answered our questions if they could. Be well.

Hi gail641, many thanks for stopping by and for taking the time to leave a comment. I take it with your response that you have had an unpleasant experience with the board or at least bad feelings about it? I think you're right to stay away from them. It's kind of like playing Russian Roulette, you just never know when the outcome is going to be nasty! To be honest, I think major events with a ouija board don't happen that often, but frequently enough for people to take care with them. Secondly we are not sure exactly what we are dealing with - is it an external manifestation of the sub-conscious or a spirit. I think both are possible and I definitely think at times that spirit might well be able to attach to people using the board.

I'd never like any "nasty pieces of work." I won't ever touch a Ouija board ever again. I wonder how and if spirits can use the board to hurt physical people who dabble with them? That would be very frightening and a horror.

Hi Seeker7, that does sound very scary! I think it is better to leave the Ouija board alone. That guy did have a terrible experience-luckily it did start to fade away. Nasty pieces of work don't sound good at all.

Hi gail641, great to hear from you and thanks for stopping by. Like yourself, my family and friends and I used to muck about with ouijas. Thankfully for us nothing ever happened! However, one of the group later started a ouija board session in another house with other people and a couple of noises were heard and the room had went very cold, but nothing else, so basically they put it all down to coincidence. But this guy maintained that for about 3 months after this ouija session, he had the feeling of being watched at home and at work. He also had some of his personal belongings moved such as his watch, clothing and wallet into places he wouldn't place them. He was quite scared but then things just started to fade away and he didn't have anymore trouble. But yes, they do seem to have the ability to attract nasty pieces of work and I guess it's probably safer to leave them. After I heard about this guy's experience I tended to leave the ouija board alone.

The Ouija board sounds like it can be really scary. It would be awful if evil spirits could come through, and it sounds like they could. I played with Ouija boards years ago, but I never will again.

Hi Lilleyth, many thanks for stopping by - I really enjoy your comments and this one is particularly interesting! I think what fascinates me about the ouija is that people have so many different experiences. I do know one couple who have used the ouija for over 30 years now and have only ever had positive things from it. Others just seem to touch the board once and they get negativity big time. Perhaps the time and place where the board is activated will result in good or bad?

seeker7 - I agree with you here. Ouija boards are dangerous, I'm not sure why as I've used other divinatory tools and never got quite frightened or negative occurrences with anything but a ouija board. My story on my horrifying ouija board experience is told in my hub below. I had encounters with a spirit that called itself "Z". Very terrifying indeed and I've never used a ouija board since!

By the way, I truly enjoyed this hub. Well researched, well written, and great theories!

    Hi Twilight Lawns,

Wow! That is so interesting. I haven't heard of anyone being asked to leave before a 'presence' would start to communicate. For me - and this a very personal opinion - I would be suspicious of a presence that wanted to keep someone at a distance. The only reason I can think of is that in some way the 'presence' or whatever it was, had reason to fear you being near them. If it was an ordinary person why would they be scared? Many thanks for the Islamic Surah, I will certainly include this in the list of prayers. Many thanks for your comment and input it was great to hear from you.

Thank you for a really interesting hub.

This might interest you: I have only been involved with people "playing" with the Ouija board on three occasions. Once in Australia, about fifty years ago, once on board ship in 1965, and once in England perhaps in the early eighties.

When people had attempted a session, and when some sort of "presence" announced itself, the very first thing that was said on each of the three occasions, was that the "presence" was not prepared to continue if I remained in the room. Not that I just had to stand back and not participate, but that I was to leave the room and go as far away as possible.

Several reasons were given, but they didn’t make much sense to me and the participants didn’t tell me at a later date. None of the participants in each session were participants in any of the other session.

Along with your prayers of protection from “evil”, may I suggest an addition; an Islamic Surah (a “chapter” in the Qur’an) , known named al-Falaq:

    1. I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak,

    2. from the evil of that which He hath created

    3. From the evil from the darkness when it is intense

    4. From the evil of malignant witchcraft

    5. And from the evil of the envier when he envieth

    Hi Angela,

Many thanks for stopping by and for your interesting comment. I agree with you about the point if people know how to use these tools properly that they can be great for development. A friend of mine, who is Wiccan, has used a spirit board especially made for her when she was learning the craft. Her tutor taught her how to use the board and she has found it to be not only a great way to learn but very positive. The stories I researched for here were of course ordinary people who didn't open or close the board properly and basically had no idea of the dangers invovled - in essence a game, but one that went horribly wrong.

The book "The Excalibur Briefing" sounds very interesting and I'll look for a copy. I've always been an admirer of John Zaffis, it would be great to meet him one day. Thanks again for taking the time to comment - very interesting information.

Very good hub! Interesting video with John Zaffis. I have seen him speak and he was kind enough to give me some good advice once with regard to exorcism (not in any way related to Ouija boards, by the way). I used to manufacture spirit boards. I believe they - like the tarot cards - can be a tool to help people develop psychically. The problem is that too many people aren't ready for this and they do not use the proper approach with the Ouija. Then they blame a piece of wood or cardboard and plastic! Of course, that's ridiculous. But, it doesn't stop them. What Zaffis is talking about is explained by the book, "The Excalibur Briefing." There are swirling vortices of energy, which can become fixed.

Hi Vellos, You're right. I think that is the really creepy thing about many of the ouija board encounters. That 'it' whatever it is, starts out nicely - maybe to gain confidence - then turns real nasty. Time and time again this happens and for some with serious consequences.

  • vellos profile image

Also, from the accounts I've read an experience may start out positive and as it progresses become steadily more and more negative over time as the board user(s) become more drawn to using the board.

    Hi Vellos,

Many thanks for stopping by and for your comment. I totally agree with you. There are people who will claim that their experiences have been positive. But when you carry out research the vast majority of people will say the opposite. Whether it is spirit or another reason for ouija board experiences, I agree, on the whole it is best left alone. I was the same, 'playing' ouija with a made up board. What a weird experience you had - not surprising it sent shivers up your spine!!I have heard a few accounts of the glass/planchette moving of its own accord - pretty scary stuff if you ask me. I never did have anything weird happen. But my older sister (Trish)did attend one ouija board session with friends and a few, really creepy things happened. The most bizarre was that one of the guys seemed to have got followed to work and heard someone/thing calling his name for a couple of weeks after he had used a ouija with friends. Think he slept with the light on for a while!

Hi Seeker, my mates and I used to have quite a few seances. Usually with just a glass on a coffee table, occasionally with a board. One time a person's name was spelt out, someone none of us knew, we asked a few questions one being how did you die? The word ugly was spelt out, giving me cold shivers. Sometimes the glass would move around with none of actually touching it. I'm a big sceptic normally, but it is hard to understand how this occurs. Cheers

    Hi CMHypno,

Many thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I think you have hit on the nail on the head when you say "..playing around with things they don't understand...". There is so much that is unknown about the use of a ouija board and the elements that are brought together to produce such negative effects, that to go into this situation is at least foolhardy at best stupidity. But humans being the curious creatures we are, many will continue to use the ouija. I agree that people will learn more and certainly be much safer joining a spiritual circle/psychic school. Many thanks again for your comment and here's hoping it will influence some not to fool around.

  • CMHypno profile image

As with all things, I believe that you should not play around with things that you don't understand, and for most people ouija boards fall into that category. People who are genuinely interested in learning about how to communicate with spirit or develop their psychic potential should join a reputable development circle or course, instead of scaring themselves witless with ouija boards
