Ram Charit Manas (ramcharitmanas) is one of the best epics

Updated on February 8, 2014

'Maryada Purshottam' (which means the most dignified and perfect man ever). Shri Rama is believed to be the 7th incarnation of sovereign sheilder Lord Vishnu. Lord Rama, the idealistic avatar has one most worshiped deities among the Hindu fraternity. Rama is considered as the symbolization of of good manners and moral excellence, an idol of morals. It is believed that Lord Rama took birth on earth to destroy the evilness.

According to the great scholar Swami Vivekananda, Lord Rama is "the incarnation of the true, of morals, the perfect son, the perfect husband, and most importantly, the perfect king". Rama is broadly recognized to be a real historic hero of old times who has been described very well in the epic like Ramayana written by Maharishi Valmiki. As per Indian Mythology, Lord Vishhnu took birth as Rama in the Treta Yug. Although every Hindu has a strong belief in Lord Rama but it was in 11th century AD when 'Goswami Tulsidas' translated Valmiki's Sanskrit Ramayana in Ramacharitmanas after which Lord Rama became more popular among the Hindus. Later Ramacharitmanas was also translated in many foreign languages which made Lord Rama popular among the western people too.

Shri Rama was an idol of moral excellence. He was not only kind and loving but liberal and tactful too. He had fantastic body-build and charming styles, he was highly impressive, bighearted, courteous and courageous. He was absolutely free from showiness and had amazing personality.

Lord Rama was blessed with with fabulous supernatural qualities. Widely represented as a reflexion of God or as a real hero of Hindu myths and tales, Rama is a vastly idolized as a sacred figure to masses not only in India but also all over the world as Hindu mythology and epics are gaining popularity in the west too.

I am fond of reading books, I have read a good number of novels, dramas, short stories and poems. Some merely give enjoyment. There are others which leave a very deep impression on the mind. Some books infuse the spirit of nationalism in the reader. But I have not come across such a book so far, which is as good as the Ramcharit Manas of Tulsi Das. Shri Goswami Tulsi Das Ji is the writer of this great epic.

Every Indian has read or heard the story of Lord Ram and Sita. The popular story has been narrated in Ram Charit Manas in the most beautiful way. The book has originally been written in the language 'Avadhi'. The book covers all the chapters of the life of Lord Ram including the story of his birth, his great teachings, his principles, his wars against evil powers and his victories. The book has been divided into various parts. Every part deals with particular aspect of life or performance of Lord Ram. Every Indian likes to hear the famous story of Ram Charit Manas. Many have a great faith in it. But my reason for liking it are quite different. I have found in it, religious, political and social wisdom in Ramcharitmanas. It enlightens as well as entertains.

Indeed, it is a true treasure house of rare wisdom. I will give here some reasons which have made this book my favorite. This book is the treasure house of Hindi literature. Tulsi Das ji has created all the 'Ras' (Sentiments) in it. The beauty lies in the fact that he has not crossed the limit at any stage. The 'Sringar Ras' which makes the poetry romantic, has been used with rare and superb skill. The similes and metaphors stand unparalleled at their own places. The literary flow is maintained in such a way that not even a single word of a single line can be replaced by any other word. The superiority of the composition of 'Ramcharitmanas' is reflected in this statement .The Hindus accept it as a great religious book. It lays down the rules of conduct for all. It makes everyone believe that virtuous sentiments and beliefs are always protected by Lord. The way in which 'Ravana', the symbol of evil, was defeated is well known to all. How the creator of all, Lord Rama, showered his life on everyone who had a firm faith in him, becomes evident from this book.

The stories of the poor old bhilini 'Shavri' and the boatman 'Kevat' support this statement. Indeed, as a religious book, it is one of the best books in the world. The political wisdom of the book is also great. Hoe a good ruler should govern his people becomes clear from the rule of Lord Ram. Even today we aspire to establish 'Ram Rajya'. How a bad ruler becomes the object of Contempt of everyone is revealed bu the example of Ravan.

The way Ram won over the evil with the support of his 'friends' and devotees such as Hanuman, Sugriv and Vibhishana who was the brother of Ravana, is a good lesson to learn. Many such gems of wisdom are hidden in this great book. Besides, Ram Charit Manas reflects the height of progress which India reached in the 'Treta Yug' which was the period of Lord Ram. We can be proud of it even today. In social sphere we learn importance of self-sacrifice. The sacrifice of Lord Ram for his father 'Dashratha', brother and people is unique and one of a kind. Lord Ram's wife 'Sita' is the true symbol of Indian womanhood, Lakshman and Bharat are the best examples of true and great brothers. How the voice of people should be respected above everything else by a king is shown by the renunciation of his wife 'Sita' by Lord Ram. The achievement of science of those days are yet to be matched by the present day scientists.

All these qualities make the book a superb piece of literature and wisdom. A book may be good from one point of view, other may be good from other point of view but 'Ram Charit Manas' is the book which is great in numerous ways. It is my friend, philosopher and guide. And I believe that Ram charit Manas is one of the best philosophy and guiding book for life. I always love to read it and follow its teachings which can make anybody's life wonderful. I recommend this book for you all to read it.

Nicely written history lesson. I remember years ago reading something by Ram Das and finding it to be very interesting but I confess that I know very little about the subject. I'm not even totally sure Ram Das has anything to do with what you're speaking about but I am interested in always learning. Nice hub! Peace!! Tom
