Real Psychics: Psychic Abilities and Predicting the Future

Updated on August 9, 2014

Does a Good Reading Equal a Prediction?

I've seen client reviews so many times stating things like "The reading was no good, I received no predictions." or "He/she told me everything I know already, what a waste of time", and I always have to shake my head a little. Understanding the differences between psychics and fortunetellers can make a huge difference and learning about the various psychic abilities and how they work can help a client understand how it all works and what a good reading really is. In today's world there seems to be a need for instant answers and gratification and that a psychic is only as good as his or her next prediction, when in actual fact, a reading should be about validation, educating the client and creating a deeper understanding of his or her situation and how they are able to deal with it to get the outcome they desire.

In situations where a psychic confirms what the client already knows, it's actually a sign of a decent connection and is verification that can be used to show that the reader knows what he or she is talking about, so when a reader talks about what the client already knows, it's a precious gift and a surefire way to know you're speaking to the real deal.

There are real psychics that flat out refuse to do predictive work and they openly state in their profiles that they are not fortunetellers and do not offer predictions. This is mainly due to warped client expectations and this is their way of avoiding being typecast as one thing when they are really something else.

Psychics Versus Fortunetellers

This brings me to the difference between a psychic reader and a fortuneteller. A psychic may have one or a few out of a variety of gifts, but it's important to remember that not all psychic gifts focus on precognition (or the ability to see the future or future events). Now you may ask, what good is a psychic if he or she can't tell me what's going to happen?, but think about it this way: Would you rather have someone guide you through the past and present in order to show you where you're headed and what your potential outcomes are? Or would you prefer to sit down in front of someone who makes claims of future events as if they are absolutely written in stone and guaranteed to never change?

Fortunetellers do exactly what I mentioned above; they'll sit a client down and start making bold statements about the future and insist that these events will take place, or even worse, that they're able to 'make it happen' or 'change the outcome' through a magic spell or ritual of some kind. This is nothing more than a scam and a common trick fraudsters play on unsuspecting clients to relieve them of their hard earned cash.

In order to shed some more light on what psychics really do and how the various psychic gifts work, let's explore the clair senses in greater detail

The Gift of Clairvoyance

The gift of clairvoyance is probably the most well known or most widely known psychic gift of all. So much so, that in some parts of the world, psychics are called clairvoyants whether they have the actual gift of sight or not.

Clairvoyance describes the ability to 'see clearly', if translated directly and what it means is that a psychic is able to see images, see symbols, or even see events play out in their mind's eye. To someone who experiences this, it is as if the images are projected inside the mind, or on the 'back' of someone's forehead. Another way to describe this particular psychic gift could be to call it a mental 'popup', because during conversations or readings, the psychic may experience an image popping up into his or her mind, much like one of those online adverts.

It's a common misconception that clairvoyants 'see' the future. The truth is a clairvoyant can see pretty much anything, from the past, to the present, or potentially something that could occur in future if all events leading up to it stays on course. Some psychics have the gift of postcognition, which means they are able to 'see' the past and this often helps understand where a client has come from or gone through.

So, in a nutshell, clairvoyance simply means that a psychic receives visual information, in much the same way as we do when we have our eyes open, but it may relate to the past, present, or in some cases, the future.

The Gift of Clairsentience

Clairsentience means to be 'clear sensing' or to sense things other people cannot. One of the common signs of clairsentience is goosebumps or to feel the hair raise on the back of your neck and this is something a lot of ordinary people experience but never attribute to sensitivity that goes beyond the normal senses.

Psychics with this particular gift may also feel the emotions of others (almost like empaths do) but with the distinction that they are able to differentiate between their own emotions and that of another person. So in essence it's like feeling something while you're outside of it or away from it and you instinctively know it's not yours, but you completely understand what the other person is going through.

Intuition is a form of clairsentience, and many of us have it (in fact most of us do) but we tend to ignore it and play it down, when it's in actual fact a very handy ability and one that could help and guide us on a day to day basis, if we let it.

This psychic gift, again, may or may not focus on the future. Not all psychics have the gift of precognizance, but even if a clairsentient has it, he or she may feel very nervous or anxious and feel that 'something is about to happen' but may not know exactly what.

Another form of clairsentience is psychometry and this relates to the ability to absorb energy from objects by touching it and then receiving impressions from it. Some psychics are able to use this ability for readings, while others find themselves reluctant to touch old objects or people they don't know well. It's all about the individual and how he or she perceives things and wishes to deal with it. The gift of psychometry can be very helpful in readings since old items like clothing or jewelry worn by someone carries their energy signature and may give the reader information about them.

Reading Expectations

When consulting with a psychic, what do you place the most value on?

The gift of Claircognizance

If you've ever come across a situation where someone says to you, "I know this to be true, I just don't know HOW I know.", you've dealt with a claircognizant. This type of psychic gift brings in information directly, and the psychic may have a sense of knowing or even know the information without knowing how or why they got it.

Claircognizance, when experienced firsthand, sometimes feels like the information is pouring directly into your crown chakra and it's being put inside your head, but you won't know how or why. It's one of the more fun psychic phenomena, because once this happens someone often asks "How did you know that?" and the reader is left shrugging their shoulders.

As with the other psychic gifts, there may or may not be a focus on the future, and the reader may know that something is likely to happen but may not have more detail as to why, when, or exactly how.

It can be compared to receiving a part or two of a puzzle and having to figure out the entire picture from just those few clues.

The Gift of Clairaudience

The gift of clairaudience is an interesting one because it can take one of two forms: The first is where it has almost a paranormal quality where the reader literally 'hears' certain sounds. If you've ever heard your name called out when there was no one else around, or a knocking on a door when there was really no one out there, you've experienced clairaudience.

The second way this gift manifests is through mental sounds, and in this case, it is almost as if the sound enters right above the reader's physical ears. It's not something the reader physically hears, but rather hears inside his or her mind.

With this ability, much like with clairvoyance, claircognizance, and clairsentience, the sounds are often clues, or phrases that represent something more. This could focus on the past, present or future.

The Gift of ClairEmpathy

There are those that argue empathy is a human quality and not a psychic ability, that's why I'm using the term 'clairempathy'. What this is, is the ability to feel the emotions of another person as if they are your own.

Empaths have it the hardest of all the psychics, because if they have this ability and do not realize it, or have the ability and don't know how to protect or shield themselves, they may go through a very rough time emotionally.

Empathic individuals tend to be incredibly sensitive and can be compared to psychic 'sponges' because they literally soak up the energy and emotions of those around them. This most often happens in an attempt to make the other person feel better when they are upset, depressed, angry etc, but afterwards the empath will be left feeling drained and experiencing the emotions of the other person.

Diagnosis of mental disorders, depression, bipolar disorder and so on are not that rare in empaths because they take on the emotions of others, so their 'feelings' or state of mind won't make sense given their own circumstances.

This gift tends to focus on emotion rather than the future, past, or present, but it often comes along with other gifts or a sense of strong intuition.

The Gift of Mediumship

The gift of mediumship is another well known one, and it's a common assumption that all psychics are mediums. That's definitely not true, because though all mediums are psychic, not all psychics have the gift of mediumship. A medium has the ability to communicate directly with the souls of those who have crossed over, and is able to relay information and messages to loved ones.

Clairvoyants may be able to see spirits, clairsentients are able to sense the presence of spirits, clairaudients may be able to 'hear' spirit activity, and clairempaths may feel the emotions of spirits that surround them, but none of those gifts allow for direct communication.

The Gift of Telepathy

Telepathy is another very misunderstood psychic gift, and it's something many people assume all psychics have, and that if they have it, it is absolute. In other words, they expect all psychics to be able to read minds and to do so flawlessly at all times, with any person.

Telepathy does allow someone to receive communication mentally, but in most cases it takes the form of phrases or words instead of entire conversations or someone's entire train of thought. Depending on the skill or gift of the reader, he or she may be able to pick up the entire gist of a conversation, or know what someone is thinking, while for others it may be the occasional phrase or word that comes through.

This gift also does not focus on the future as such, but rather on the idea of receiving information through a mental link.

The Value of Validation in Readings

Now that we've had a look at most of the psychic gifts and how they relate to readings, it's easy to see the difference between a prediction based reading and one based on information relating to the present (and how that may influence the future).

The true value of a reading is not based in the predictions given, and whether those predictions come true or not, but rather in validation given at the time of the reading and a strong overview of the present, the intentions of those involved, and the overall energies the client is working with in their situation.

It may be best to see a psychic reader as an intuitive advisor and as someone who can guide you and give you advice around the issues you're dealing with because that's exactly what they're there for. The future is yours to create and a good psychic will be able to give you an idea of where you've been, how you're progressing, and whether your current direction or path leads you to a better place.

Thanks for the comment Healthyannie. I'm in full agreement with you and I'm so sorry to hear that your friend had to go through that. An ethical light worker would never give someone a message like that, and what was said makes it very clear that the person she was speaking to really had no clue what they were doing, and absolutely no ethics or empathy. I sincerely hope for your friend's sake that her son will come through at some point so she can have peace of mind, but it's also important to let her know that we are allowed to disregard information if it doesn't come from a place of light or if it doesn't resonate with us on a spiritual/energy level (although I know in your friend's case that is easier said than done).

Sadly I think that many so called fortune tellers only give psychics a bad name. I often call fortune tellers psychic spin doctors. They play around with someone psychie, and often cause anxiety. It happened to a friend of mine who lost her son. She was told her son would make contact through a medium as he had died as a lost soul without saying goodbye to his mom ( the fortune teller's words). Five years down the line, he has still not made contact and my friend is distraught. Her son died happy after having completed on his first home, and bought a new motor bike. He was not a lost soul. We have been to lots of evenings of mediumships, and he has never come through but she is anxiously still seeking and blaming herself.
