Reality of Reincarnation

Updated on May 1, 2011

Reincarnation Defined

Reincarnation means to incarnate again. The word incarnate comes from the word carnal, which means flesh and blood; physical; material. So incarnate refers to a person’s being encased in flesh and blood, encased in a material body. Reincarnation then, means, taking on of a new material body after one’s present material body died.

Reincarnation is also called the transmigration of the self or soul. The self transmigrates from an old or useless body to a new body.

Who are you and who is reincarnating

Reincarnation refers to someone who is reincarnating. So who is that someone? Who is that transmigrates from one body to the next? Who is it that is reincarnating? It is you.

Who are you?

You can have a perfect understanding of reincarnation only if you first have a perfect understanding of your identity. Therefore we will begin our explanation of reincarnation by answering the question “Who are you?”

Are you the body? Most people mistakenly identify themselves as the physical body. They believe that “I am my body; my body is me.” But as long as you consider yourself to be mere flesh and blood, you cannot understand the process of reincarnation. Therefore the first realization must be that you are not the physical body.

For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, undying and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain. - Bhagavad Gita 2:20

Therefore we are always of good courage and know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord... We are of good courage I say, and prefer to rather be out of the body and be home with the Lord. - 2 Corinthians 5:6, 8

If you can be out of the body and yet still exist somewhere else, then obviously you aren’t your body. In the New Testament. Jesus teaches that you can enter into the Kingdom of God but that yur material body cannot.

Flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. - 1 Corinthians 15:50

Eternal Spirit Soul

If you are not the gross physical body and you are not the mind, Then who are you? What is your essence? You are a spirit soul, a spark of the Supreme Spirit Soul. Your essence is spirit not matter.

There are two distinct energies – material and spiritual.

Your gross and subtle bodies are material in essence. But your essence is spirit. The material energy is called the inferior energy because it is neither aware nor living. You are the eternal spirit soul temporarily in this material body.

Taking on another body

After a person leaves behind his “vehicle” the gross physical body, if he is God conscious he returns to the Spiritual World, the Kingdom of God. In the Spiritual world there is no death, no birth, no material bodies. The Spiritual world is the natural home of the of the eternal spirit soul.

But if a person is not perfectly God-conscious when he leaves his body- if he is still has material desires and attachments and is still owed karmic reaction – he must take on another material body, must enter into another vehicle: he must reincarnate.

The Supreme Lord states:

For one who is born death. And for one who dies birth is certain.

As we have said, the physical body is like clothing worn by the self. At death, this clothing is removed. Afterwards new clothing (a new body) is put on. As a person puts on a new garments, giving up old ones, similarly, the self accepts new clothing (a new body) is put on. As a person puts on a new garments, giving up old ones, similarly, the self accepts new material bodies, giving up the old useless ones.
