Religion - The Great Lie

Updated on June 2, 2012

Born Catholic

As a mostly Italian American I was born and raised a Catholic. All of my childhood i was fed lie after lie by my religion and as a I grew more intelligent and aware I came to recognize religion in general for what it was.

I am not an extremist so I will not have long lists of facts and figures for you. (I won't mention any names) I will merely go with the already universally understood truths about the catholic religion. We all know that as the Romans took over much of Europe they brought their new Christian religion with them. In order to convince the natives of the countries being subjugated and raped by these religious zealots that their religion was the only true religion they absorbed the traditions of these other people rather than trying to abolish them.

Let's go down the list of the one's that come to mind. There is the yule log, a pagan ritual begun by the celts. This was a seasonal tradition that marked the onset of winter. Then we have easter eggs. This was and still is an eggshell carving related tradition from I believe Switzerland or some other northern land. Then you have the fact that all of the dates for christian days of supposed import were changed to overlay the days the pagans had chosen to celebrate their own traditions. In this way they supplanted other religions, they gave the people a choice in many cases at the point of a spear, as to which ceremony they were going to attend. Some choice, eh?

How about Santa Claus? A real saint existed who took the plight of the poor children of his area to heart. They then created a myth around him that still exists today. Do I hate Christmas? Not at all. What i do despise is the commercialism that surrounds it. In this day and age people do not need the added pressure of a holiday which demands they spend their hard earned cash. It really is just an excuse for many people, ladies you know who I am talking about, to shop and buy, buy, buy! This is an addiction, do not doubt or deny.

How about that Easter Bunny? Where the hell did he come in at? Actually it was just commercialism at its finest sometime in the early 20th century as some company who will remain nameless in this hub actually created the bunny to help promote Easter! Promote Easter?

I spent my earliest years being dragged along to church. As I grew to the age of nine and ten my eyes widened as I became enamored with the myth of my religion. I found God at that young age and began going to sunday school. That didn't turn out too well.

There was another boy, the son of a wealthy family who paid good money for their son to go to their schools. I wen't to publlic school. This other boy, let's call him lenny, spent most of his time teasing the girls and pegging them with erasers and such. I had been raised by a very strong hand that demanded i stand up for girls and those too weak to stand up for themselves.

I told the boy to stop. He laughed and really hit a girl hard. He threw his pencil at her and the point literally stuck in her arm. She was crying and now I was angry. He had done that to make a point to me. He did what he wanted. What he didn't know was that I could care less what he thought. The nun was outside in the hall dealing with something so I stood up calmly, walked over to his desk and punched him straight in the nose.

The girls applauded and squealed with joy! Long before I had begun going to this class he had been terrorizing them and finally someone had done something about it! Apparently whenever they would tell on him the nun would look away and make nothing of it. His family's wealth decided his innocence without a trial.

Blood streamed down his nose and he cried out loud. I wen't back to my seat. The girls all thanking me as I passed. The nun however was not so overjoyed. I explained my actions and the girls all piled in to help my cause. They explained that lenny was always doing things to them but she never cared or listened. I did something. They believed I should not get in trouble.

That was my last day in sunday school. My Dad asked me why i hit the boy. I explained myself, feeling like I was justified. "I had to do something, dad. The girl was crying and the nun didn't care!" He smiled and nodded. "I taught you to stand up for what's right, son. You are not going to be punished, but you can't go back to the school anymore. They won't have you."

I had been betrayed by my religion. I saw what money did for a person first hand. I saw that religion was nothing more than a whore selling itself out to the highest bidder. I saw then that my religion was a lie. That was when I began personally campaigning against anything and everything that was an inherent untruth. I turned to other versions of the same religion as a teenager but only found the same nonsense.

Even worse as i became a free thinking adult I realized that all religions are based on books written by men. Some of these holy tomes were, and I quote, "Written by the hand of men who were being given clear instruction on what to write by God!" Whaat?? First Santa Claus and now this??? Does anyone realize we are taking a man's word on this? Fairy tales.

Stop it! You wan't to believe in fairy tales, but not the fairy tales of so-called pagans, no. Those fairy tales are most definitely untrue while your religious fairy tales are most assuredly true. Whaaat? Are you people really that hypocritical?

Yes. The answer is yes. The biggest hypocrites in the world are those religious fanatics who believe anything their holy book says but nothing any other person, be they an accredited scientist or an eyewitness to a UFO, says.

Upon seeing this truth for myself I cast off all religion. I even said, "Looks to me like all throughout the ages men have created religions to suit their times and their needs as a people. So what's to stop me from creating a new religion out of thin air? All I have to do is find the desperate and disenfranchised and convince them of it. Once I have given them food and clothes they will believe anything in order to recieve more." Isn't that right, religion? Yes, religion, I am talking directly to you.

Nice little set up, is religion. Takes money from their followers with no real requirement to give anything back since the money is for God. God will thank you in the afterlife, my child.

What a load. If God does exist, and believe it or not i do think God exists, just not in the way that religion tries to convince, then he gave us free will for a reason. He did not give us free will so we would follow the first smiling jack who comes up with a Holy Book!

Now, I will not deny that the moral teachings of faith are a good thing. This is where religion is revealed ultimately as the brainwashing tool it was originally meant to be. People of ancient times in Europe were little more than tribesfolk and savages before the Romans arrived. They needed convincing that their sacrificing of babies(Celtic Druids), ok Einder - Sacrificial practices, and free range sex habits were bad for society as a whole. I get that.

Then you have Sodom and Gammora. These sorts of places existed and were a bane to civilized folk everywhere. Slavery was not invented by white people in America, it was prevelant all throughout history and was simply practiced by whomever was the ruling faction at the time. Religion at first looked down on this practice but it did not take long for men to pervert the words in their holy tomes so that they could have slaves and still feel righteous.

The bottom line here is that religion was needed during ancient times to keep people in line. Now that we are a supposedly civilized society why are we still adhering and looking to religion? We no longer need it here in America and as far as I can tell the only thing it does in this day and age is create divisions among those who would otherwise be brother and sister. It robs good people of their livings and it robs young people of their childhood. Giving any person power as the supposed hand or voice of God is another joke.

I had a cousin who stood at the altar as an altar boy all through his childhood. One day he came home and told his Mom that he didn't want to go back there anymore because the priest was doing things to him! Yes, sexual things. After beating his ass for making up such a terrible lie she dragged him back to that church and made him apologize. Guess what? He hadn't been lying at all. The abuse continued for some time after that. Do you understand what I am saying now, religious zealot?

Cast off your religion and worship your God in your heart, mind and soul. Allow no other to tell you what or how to think. This is the way of fools. This is the way of sheep and history shows what becomes of sheep. No, as a matter of fact it doesn't. History only mentions the lions, the sheep are simply referred to as the victims. Don't be a victim.

Overall a decent Article. If not for misinformation I would've voted it up. Do a little research on some of your facts before you decide that they are facts. Also, perhaps check out the book The Pagan Christ. It's one persons search for truth in the Bible that lead away from Mainstream Christianity and into something more spiritual. I think you might like it.

      Anyway, Enjoy and Cheers.

Druids sacrificing babies was something perpetuated by the Church when it wanted to eliminate them. There's all sorts of things like that out there which never occurred but other beliefs systems have to suffer from because of the things the Church said and everyone assumed to be true. I'm not saying that your article is bad, and I understand the point you were trying to make, but the information has no basis in fact of any kind. As I'm not sure if whether or not you tried to look into it, I just recommend doing so, that's all.

Outstanding article. I'm glad I'm following you and wish all of those devout religious nuts out there would read and understand what you have written here. I'm sick of people using religion to bash others and push politics their way. Good for you!!!

The Romans actually were the ones "invaded" by the Christians; it was the Christians who ultimately began prosecuting and destroying Roman pagan temples during Christianity's takeover of Europe in the 5th century. By this time the Romans were already quite widespread. I agree with you that the majority of Christian symbols, holidays, and observances are largely based off of ancient pagan ways, and your passion is obvious and many of the things you have written are mostly true, but there is some information here that needs to be researched a bit more.

I have cast off my family's Baptist faith. I have never felt kin to it and it has always felt wrong, but I found my own path. My religion is not based off of a book (as many religions out there are. In truth, only three major religions are based on books, and there are a couple of more which draw the bulk of their philosophy from a text as well).

I feel I should direct you to George Carlin's Religion is Bullshit skit if you have not already seen it. It is quite informative and wonderfully amusing (and true). Religion is bullshit, but it does not change my faith, which is why I am a solitaire in my practices.

Love George and I have seen the skit, but its been a while. I admit the pious make me angry, at the same time I have faith in a greater spirit and higher purpose but not the word of men. At some point civilization has to get past ancient superstition in order to evolve as a species. Why? So we can populate the universe, obviously!

Any who, thanks for droppin' by and leaving a great comment, hmclio!

Yes, the picture and quote are quite perfect for this hub! Thank you as well, I am often long-winded when it comes to subjects that I study and this is right up my alley!

Barley was eaten by poor people back then and wheat was only had by the wealthy. Little did they known back then, something we know now, that barley has a particular breed of fungi that will grow on it and if consumed will in effect poison the person eating it. Not powerful enough to kill instead it often gave serious hallucinations not unlike the effects we see today from LSD. FACT. The bibles were written, reworded and rewritten over and over by delusional barbarians who did not even know the world was round! They thought they at the middle East, not America or Earth no, the middle east was the center of the Universe! Drugs are bad and so is believing things people high on drugs write down in fevered fantasies.

Great article, it's always tough breaking away from religion when one is raised in it.

True, and no matter my rejection of it many of the traits of a religious person still cling to my personality. Morality is a good thing but the language and habits I could do without. Thanks for stopping by, Josak!
