- The Role of Religion in History & Society
Religion is nothing but slavery
“God has no religion.” ― Mahatma Gandhi
There is an on-going trend in most parts of the world, that of people leaving their religions. More and more people are waking up and denouncing their once treasured religions. The question is where are they going now? Hopefully they do not form or join another one because we certainly do not need another religion. This says to me there is something seriously flawed with religion and more people are waking up to that realization. The sting that religion once had (still has) on people is diminishing.
What is a religion? Religion is a very powerful bond. It is a form of common belief in and worship of a supernatural controlling power, especially a personal god or gods. It is this belief and devotion of humans to a religion that they define themselves by. Religion capitalizes on the void of purpose and significance in the hearts of humans and it promises to fulfil this void but as religion is man-made, it can never fulfil this lifetime void.
The origin of religion
Remember how religion came about, initially, there was no religion because man and his creator were in unison and in sync with each other and with everything. There was no need for a third party because the Creator could directly communicate and transfer his will to man without any hindrance. It was a perfect harmony. The moment this harmony was compromised by man allowing a third party validation, their perfect relationship was contaminated, the Creator could no longer commune with man and they were out of sync (man could no longer hear or understand his Creator, he was spiritual deaf and blind).
Just like a fish needs water to survive, humans need God to survive
Each creature needs its source to survive; man needs his Creator to survive. As the Creator drove man out of his presence, it meant death to their spirit and a permanent void for purpose, fulfilment, significance and the ability of being in charge of his destiny. This was the greatest fall to ever befallen humans; it denotes existence without meaning or living.
As we see from the scriptures, people resorted to all sorts of rituals just to have some sense of belonging or appeasing to a deity. They started filling the inner void with worshipping idols (an act of religion) and since then the best that man has conjured up is religion just to try and somehow get back in touch with his Creator. Religion is a man’s attempt to go back to the Creator again.
Why religion would never take man back to the Creator?
Religion was never God’s design; he doesn't recognize it and he never created any human for religion including the one reading this. Religion is a result of man’s failure; he failed to manage what he was entrusted with and committed treason with it hence the emergence of religion to try and claim it back but he is using a wrong vehicle.
Slaving for religion
A slave is somebody who surrenders and submits his will to something against his will but never realising it. Religion capitalizes on the void in your heart and promises to take you back to your source as long as you are fully devoted and loyal to it and you give in without even realising what you are letting yourself in for. Religion is all about belonging, once you devote yourself to it, it defines you in life. Those who are fully devoted to it have been trapped by it and they believe in it to an extent where they do not see life outside of it. Religion becomes their essence, it is what they stand for and who they are and have formed a strong association with it that when you speak of it, it’s like you are speaking to them and of themselves even.
Religion in this sense becomes what they worship; it becomes their god and when this happens their mind is only limited and confined to what their religion tells it. There is no free flow of one’s will because it is all about the will of that religion permeating through your life and soul as you know it.
“Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.” - Blaise Pascal
In some parts of the world it is really scary, it is impossible to break out of religion because you will die, people kill for their treasured religions, a very sad truth indeed. Religion accounts for the most severe attacks and killings in our world, the on-going fights and killings in some parts of Africa, Christians and Muslims killing each other in Central African Republic, the same is going on in Nigeria, Egypt etc. Recently I read of the stoning of a pregnant Pakistani woman in honour of Islam by her family because she brought shame to the family for marrying against their wishes. What a world we live in! Sadly there are many such incidents around us.
"The most heinous and the cruel crimes of which history has record have been committed under the cover of religion or equally noble motives." - Mohandas Gandhi
These are just some of the signs of how severe religion is. Religion is powerful and dangerous. I do not single out any particular religion because in essence they are all the same. They promote themselves as being this high might that everyone under it must praise, worship and hold it in high honour. (If you can, please really seek him and pray to God to open your eyes and see what religion really is and relieve yourself of such a burden. It is a heavy one and an unworthy one at that. May he show you the truth why you are really here. And I can safely say it has nothing to do with no religion.)
Know your Source, know yourself
The truth is, as long as you do not know your Creator and yourself in him, religion will continue enslaving you. For most part of my life I regarded myself as a Christian going on in life just like everyone. Someday something happened and all of a sudden there was a question that grabbed me, I had been attending church but why do I really go to church? What’s the purpose of a church? Since then I battled for a while with these questions until I was enlightened by the Creator after seeking for the truth relentlessly and he yielded to me (that truth is for another hub I hope).
The next question after that was a personal one; I asked why I am here? Am I here to serve religion? What is the purpose of the Creator with my life? I hit it right in the head with this one and his truth has grabbed me since and journey is the most exciting and fulfilling one, to know you matter and you have value to add to humanity, to know you are here for a specific reason, nothing beat this, nothing compares to this truth, it’s simply beyond words and totally liberating. You just know it when you experience it personally.
Just like it was some 2000 years ago when the religious devout attacked the Master in the name of their religion, so it is even to this day, people still execute each other in the name of their religion. Was this the Creator’s idea? Did he ever say we must kill in his name? I have never come across such in his Word. We kill each other because we are lost. We lost our touch with him and without him there is no genuine love and once that love is absent something else occupies its place in our hearts – hatred, jealousy and pride. We lost our sense of purpose and dominion.
What a human heart yearns for is back!
We gave away his kingdom but in his Son it is brought back. Once again we are presented with an opportunity to redeem ourselves in him and seek it and go back inside his kingdom. For in it there is everything we are seeking – do you know why you are living? Do you know your purpose? Do you want a lasting peace and joy? Do you want to experience true love? Do you want to rid yourself of stress and frustrations? Do you want to find your passion in life again? Do you want to be in charge of your life and destiny again? Do you feel like there’s got to be something more for you on this earth? Are you sick and tired of being controlled by other people telling you what you can or cannot do?
If you answered YES, then there is place where all these are waiting for you. You were created for all of the above and plentifully more. All of us, in the entire world, as long as your are born of a women, we desire these things, it is in our nature to desire to be in charge of our lives and the solution is not a religion, that’s a substitute for the original solution. You can never find yourself in a religion but there is something greater you are called for – the kingdom of God. Here you will find your own kingdom where you are king! Religion is divisive and destructive, the sooner you release yourself from it the better. His kingdom is what you lost and what you are searching for in this life not religion.
Search no more because it‘s been here since 2000 years ago but religion made sure you never seek it let alone finding it. Remember what the Master said, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.” (Mat.23:13). Another account he says, “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” (Luke 11:52).
Religion made sure you do not know let alone discover what is rightfully yours – his kingdom. Religious people, lawyers (experts in the law), people who knew the scriptures made sure you never know about your greatest inheritance, the kingdom of God. Finally it is all laid bare, you are free to seek it earnestly and find it in its all splendour! Be Blessed.
"Religion is the brainchild of fear, and fear is the parent of cruelty. The greatest evils inflicted on humankind are perpetrated not by pleasure-seekers, self-seeking opportunists, or those who are merely amoral, but by fervent devotees of religion." - Emmanuel Kofi Mensah
