Shiva & Negativity

Updated on March 4, 2019

SHIVA RATRI CELEBRATED MARCH 4TH

Shiva is one of the most well loved Hindu deities. He is part of the Hindu Trinity of Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver & Savior) and Shiva (Destroyer). Shiva as Destroyer regenerates this destruction into something new and greater. He eliminates bad habits and social sins. He is the Transformer and Liberator because He brings transformation and liberates His devotees from their old, stuck and unproductive patterns and way of life.

Shiva eliminates social sins in ways we often can't comprehend. Pandit Rajin Balgobind says he eliminates racism from our hearts. Sexism is also another social sin we as a society are facing today in the United States. Men who sexually harassed women and girls are paying the price now for past deeds. Their actions are being revealed in the public sphere. As Jesus said, "What has been hidden will be revealed." Members of the clergy who abused children sexually are also being made accountable for their actions. Shiva is the One who makes this accountability possible.

Shiva is all genders and is beyond all such genders. There is a form of Shiva which is half man and half woman called Ardhanarishwara. In this form Shiva is all genders. Yet at the same time He is beyond the concept of genders. Dr. Rambachan talks about Sri Ram in the Tulsidas Ramayan where Lord Ram names the genders: male, female and the third gender. The third gender describes the rest of humanity: lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender. There is a Hindu story of how the male warrior in order to defeat a great warrior on the other side of the conflict who has a boon which made him invincible to all except female warriors. He could only be defeated by a woman. The gods and goddesses changed his gender and he became a female warrior. This is a great illustration of the transgender person. Dr. Rambachan talks about Arjuna taking another identity in exile as a dance and music teacher for the king's daughter. He took the identity of a gay man.

In the Native American tradition there often are five genders: male, female, lesbian, gay and the combination of bi-sexual and transgender. The third, fourth and fifth genders are called Two Spirited ones who are consider the wisdom keepers of the tribe.

Shiva is beyond all caste and class and is egalitarian. He simply does not care what class or caste a person is in society. He has mantras which can help you overcome and eliminate stress and barriers you face in your life, be they gender, race or some other difficulty. The greatest mantras is the Shiv Panchakshari Mantra. It is very famous: Om Namah Shivaaya. By repeating this great mantra over time, you can remove negativity and stress from your life. Worshiping Shiva any time or on Maha Shiva Ratri can also eliminate stress and negativity from your life. It is also good as a human being to do karma yoga and fight for the rights of others who are being oppressed. This way you can gain good karma and also do the right thing in any situation. The Baidyanath Ashrakam Mantra can be recited for good health. The Maha Mrityunjay Mantra can erase sadness and bad karma. The full text of the mantra is: Om Try Ambakan Yajaamahe Mrtyor Mukssiiya Ma Amartaat. These two mantras are very famous and will help you with various aspects of your life.

Of course your attitude and the state of your heart and soul can also be important in eliminating negativity from your life. I feel fortunate that I saw Shiva one morning when I was waking up from my nightly dreams. A pandit from Wisconsin told me that if you see a form of God that means God is breaking through in your life. It is an excellent sign you are on the right path.

Shiva has many consorts such as: Shakti, Parvati, Kali, Uma, Sati and Durga. They are the most well known consorts, but He has many others. They are the feminine aspects of Shiva. Each one is an aspect of divinity in your life. The feminine energy is the action principle in the Universe. Shiva can not do anything without this feminine energy.

Iceland once had a one day strike where the women did not work inside or outside the home that day. Nothing got accomplished on that day. The men got the message that women are the energy of the Universe. The women went on to obtaining greater civil rights in that society because of their one day strike.

Shiva Ratri is a state of consciousness in your every day life which honors that great feminine energy in the Universe. Worship Shiva today and every day and be a light in the world. I want to wish you a Happy Shiva Ratri!

JAI SHRI SHIVA! JAI SHRI MA! JAI SHRI MANTRAS! JAI SHRI ACTION!
