In the Word, Satan is described as having a purpose, using his distinct characteristics to accomplish it. What exactly is his purpose?
We know that the Dragon caused a war in heaven and was thrown down with a third of the angels to the earth. SATAN HATES GOD, and therefore is out to DESTROY all humanity, especially God’s children. The Word says in 1 Peter 5:8 that he is our adversary, who prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Satan: The god of This World
See, God created Man to rule over all the earth, but Man gave that authority to Satan when they fell; thus he became the “god of this world”. 2 Co 4:3-4 states, “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”
So what are the characteristics of the god of this world, the Devil? Looking up all the definitions, here is a summary:
1. He is diligently observant, enchanting and crafty.
2. He is called a twisted serpent and twists the Word of God.
3. He is sly and cunning, artful and malicious.
4. He is an opponent, the arch enemy of good and is an adversary.
5. He accuses God’s children before God day and night.
6. He is a false accuser and slanderer.
7. He endeavors to scrutinize, tempt and try.
8. He is used by God for discipline and wrath (2 Sam 24:1/1 Chr 21:1; 1 Cor 5:5; Revelation 12 regarding the Great Tribulation persecution).
9. He is a liar and the father of lies.
10. He entices us to sin and commit abominations against God.
Because God HATES SIN (any form of unrighteousness), the Devil desires to enslave all people to sin, and to especially cause God's children to sin. He does this to people and through people (Romans 14:13, 20-21; 1 Cor 10:32).

The Unforgivable Sin
1 John 5:16 states that there is an unforgiveable sin (Greek #264). This is specified in Matthew 12:31-32 “Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.” The clarification is found in Mark 3:29-30 “but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin” – because they were saying, ‘He has an unclean spirit.’”.
Hebrews 10:29 “How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and insulted the Spirit of grace?”
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, homosexuals, thieves, the covetous, drunkards, revilers, and swindlers
Galatians 5:19-21 immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these.
This would include liars and those who blaspheme the Son of Man, Jesus Christ in the flesh.
You can Overcome the Devil!
Earlier we read that Man gave Satan his authority. When Jesus died on the cross and overcame the grave, all authority was given back to Him! (Mat 28:18). We must give Jesus Christ the Lorship over our lives, just as Adam and Eve gave lordship to Satan, else we remain enslaved to Satan's domain.
In the Bible, we read about how Satan submitted to God's authority in the stories of Job, Israel's captivity and even Peter (Luke 22:31). Some think that everyone is protected this way, but it doesn't appear so. Consider that Job, Israel and Peter were God's children!! Also consider that the Devil has children (Mat 13:38; John 8:44).
So how do we give Lordship back to Jesus? First, receive the Light of the World, Jesus Christ into your heart and walk in His light. 1 John 1:7 states, “but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
See my hub Come to JESUS: Salvation. Confess your sins (admit that you are a sinner) and He will forgive you and cleanse you from ALL unrighteousness! (1 John 1:9)
Once you are saved (born again), the Word states that we are to “resist the Devil and he will flee from you!” (James 4:7)
The Word also says that the Lord God has given us power over the Devil through the Holy Spirit. Luke 10:19 states, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you.”
Finally, He has given us His armor! (Ephesians 6:10-17)
- God Created Satan – Did God Create Evil?
I would say this is a 'strong meat' question (Heb 5:14). The question came up as to whether God created Satan to be evil, or whether God created all things ‘good’ (as we understand it). Many people have also asked WHY God created Satan, or even allow
