Shirdi Saibaba - Part XIV

Updated on February 10, 2012

Dasganu Maharaj and below Sai inset.

How Dasganu was brought to Shirdi?

In the life of Shirdi Saibaba, few devotees earned nearness to Saibaba. They were 1. Mahlsapathi, the Pujari(in charge of temple rituals) of Kandoba temple 2. Madhavrao Deshpande @ Shama, a school teacher, Nanasaheb Chandorkar, a Deputy Collector, H.V.Sathe and Kakasaheb Dixit find frequent mention. Also Tatya Kote Patil, Nimonkar and Annasaheb Dabolkar @ Hemadpant were some who played important roles during the life time of Saibaba. Dasganu Maharaj is solely responsible for propogating the name of Saibaba during his musical discourses on various saints and sages of India especially who belong to Konkan or Maharashtra region. Radhakrishna Ayi is a woman devotee who served the devotees who visited Shirdi by providing them food. Laxmi Bai, a wealthy woman devotee deserves special mention since she received nine coins from Saibaba just before he breathed his last. Some people may get offended since I have not mentioned about Bayaji Ma, who looked after the young Saibaba when he first visited Shirdi by force feeding him in the adjoining jungles and thick forests.

Many devotees joined the rank later as Saibaba’s fame spread far and wide. G.S.Kapharde, Megha who worshipped Saibaba and G.G.Narke were also prominent and they contributed their lot in Sai mission.

Now let us read about the interesting episode, how Dasganu came to Saibaba. He was a Police head constable and he was known for his poetic skills. But before coming to Saibaba, Dasganu was known for his folk songs which always centered on woman and this tends to detract young minds. But when Saibaba wanted to bring him under his control, the poor Dasganu could not escape from the clutch of Saibaba. Saibaba asked him to resign his post but Dasganu said that he will do so after he get promotion. In Police service, Dasganu want to get promotion as a Sub-Inspector since in those times, a Sub Inspector is a powerful man in a Police Station. Whenever Dasganu tried to earn the merit to get a promotion, Saibaba thwarted the attempts. Once Dasganu was chasing a dacoit and inadvertently he crossed the jurisdiction.

His superior came to know about this transgression and charged Dasganu for the dereliction of duties. But Dasganu told his superior that he was chasing a dacoit and hence he crossed the jurisdiction without any motive. His superior warned him for this offence. In the second incidence, an amount of Rs.25/- or so was remitted to the Police station by a village Official. But Dasganu was not present during the time. His colleague received the amount but did not include in the account book of Police station and he swindled the money. But Dasganu was charged with misappropriation of Government money! Then and there he took oath and prayed to Saibaba to save him from this situation. He said, “I will resign my post and go to Shirdi. This time Saibaba did save him from major punishment by prevailing in the mind of his superiors. Promptly Dasganu resigned his post and joined Saibaba’s bandwagon as his court Pundit (Saibaba chose him to deliver musical discourses on God) Thus he earned closeness to Saibaba.

Once Dasganu wanted to bath in Holy confluence of a river known as Sangam. But Saibaba told him, “You need not take the trouble of traveling to Sangam. The confluence of river is verily here. Put your head on my feet. When Dasganu fell in the feet of Saibaba, water flowed down from both his feet which drenched the head of Dasganu. The holy waters were brought at Shirdi by Saibaba’s Divine Power. The devotee Dasganu got excited seeing this strange miracle and he sang beautiful poems about Saibaba’s Divine powers. Rest in Part XV.
