Signs of the Zodiac: Gemini

Updated on February 7, 2011

May 21st - June 21st

The third sign of the zodiac, Gemini begins on May 21st, straddling the seasons of spring and summer, betraying the duality astrologers describe as inherent to those born under this sign. Apparent in its zodiacal symbol, The Twins, Gemini’s double personality is said to be equally as obvious in the behavior of its natives.

Geminis are able to see two points of view at the same time and are gifted in arguing both sides convincingly. Their bi-polar personalities are full of charm and wit. However, their sense of humor often masks their true feelings.

Geminis are adaptable and versatile, communicative and witty, intellectual and eloquent, youthful and lovely. Their less adorable traits include: nervousness and tension, superficiality and inconsistency, cunningness and inquisitiveness.

Much like children, Geminis sulk as well as demand attention, admiration, and the spending on them of time, energy and money. They are also prone to throw tantrums if they don’t get what they want.

Thanks to the influence of their ruling planet, Mercury, Geminis lead lives of fluctuation. Geminis ruling element is Air, contributing to their allusiveness. Gemini natives have little respect for tradition, constantly seeking change. Spontaneity is their stock in trade and monotony a curse, whether in their professions or in affairs of the heart. Therefore, Geminis fall in and out of love very easily and tend to shy away from long-term commitments.

In career, Geminis detest the tedium of a production line. However, they make ideal orators, writers and actors. To be successful, Geminis should seek careers that will give them the variety they crave.

In love as well as generally speaking, Geminis are compatible with Libra, Aquarius and Gemini itself. These signs are believed to relate in their “airy” demeanors.

Famous Geminis include painter Paul Gauguin, who fled his native France for Tahiti in a fit of Gemini boredom; financial mogul Donald Trump, rock star Paul McCartney and television personality Joan Rivers.

Gemini originates from the constellation of Gemini. However, as a result of the procession of the equinoxes, this sign is no longer in alignment with the constellation. Having a younger brother who is a Gemini born on May 31st, I feel it very safe to say that the constellation isn’t the only thing that is out of alignment. However, due to us both being a little off, he is truly one of my favorite people in this world. You can’t beat a Gemini smile!
