Slaves of Ego!

Updated on December 7, 2013

Senses attract man but saints ignore them.

Do not attach yourself to the body!

Most of us consider "Ego" as our best friend and guide. Hence we want the big ego to guide us throughout our life. By blindly following ego,we descend to animal levels easily. Let us analyze ego. What is ego? It is stemming from the body conscious and attachment. Mind plays second fiddle to ego. In fact, mind can not survive without a body. Hence the body and mind are more or less dependent on each other. The body is an inert instrument. It acts because of the mind guided by ego. In this case, the mind become a slave to the senses and sensory world!

Who can avoid a tasty sweet dish? The mouth waters immediately after hearing the name of the sweet! You have not tasted it now but the memory of the taste lingers in your mind and it recollects the joy of consuming or tasting the sweet. Likewise, the soothing music makes us sleep since we enjoy the melody. We would like to hear such nice songs very ofter. Young people seek the company of opposite sex. It is infatuation during that age. We forget that the human body is full of nauseating things. We need to clean the body every day, We need to brush our teeth both morning and evening. See the list of cosmetics ladies use. They go to beauty parlors and do their make up. Why? Unless we make up our faces, none would like to come near us and interact. Birds, fishes and other animal never do the make up since they are naturally beautiful but not the human species. Hence this is nothing but infatuation. Real love emanates from the soul and not from the body. The pure love of soul will never deplete. Whereas our attachments wax and wane like the phases of the moon.

Then comes the smell. We need scents and aroma of sprays to freshen our body. Otherwise it will have the odour of sweat. Again we wear silk and feather touch saris. We need smooth touch and feeling. Hence the textile market is growing in geometric progression. Sooner after birth, we develop attachment to many things in this world. This is due to the attachment to the body. The baby cries when it is in pain. It has the subtle attachment to its tiny body and limbs. It always sucks its fingers. These are all psychological. Hence it is not easy for human beings to shed their body attachment or conscious. Socrates faced death calmly knowing well that the deadly poison will kill him. He had no attachment to the perishable body but he wanted his teachings to the youth to remain eternal. Hence we adore Socrates as one of the greatest philosophers of Greece.

Many paths have been prescribed in the scriptures for sublimating our senses. Hence Yoga and meditation technique are in vogue throughout the world for keeping our health and to attain the highest aim of life. Yes, many scriptures consider "Self-Realization" as the goal of human life and teach the aspirants in various ways. That is why many Gurus are the most sought after persons in the West. Swami Vivekananda, Paramahamsa Yogananda, Prabhupada and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi are famous ones both in the East and West. Mere materialism can never satisfy human quest for joy and peace. Only spirituality can confer the most sought after treasures of life. Affluence can keep you in luxury and comfort but it can never grant lasting joy or happiness. Hence many people from the West are seeking the guidance of the saints, philosophers of the East. In fact, our ancient people knew many techniques to keep our body and soul in perfect equilibrium. They have recorded everything elaborately in various books. Hence the attractions of sensual pleasures lead one to disgrace and he ultimately ends up in psychiatric wards. People foolishly believe that wealth, properties or persons can give them lasting joy. No. None has proved that these ephemeral things ever grants any lasting happiness.

In fact, all sensory indulgence are momentary and fleeting. Even great Emperors who have established great Kingdoms are no more. Their cities, towns and palaces are in crumbles. Why? Time erase everything every moment. Human life is finite. During the younger days, when the limbs are in perfect conditions, we may enjoy many things. After the lapse of few years, the same man become senile and his limbs are not steady. His vision and hearing is faltering. He is never steady. Finally he is affected either by Alzheimer disease or Parkinson disease. Why? It is natural effects of the past. In few years, the man will meet his tomb! Is it for enjoying the carnal desires, god has granted this precious human birth? Definitely not. Birds and animals, insects and fishes all eat, drink sleep and mate. Then what is the specialty of the intellect and reasoning powers? It is not in vain, god has blessed man with these faculties. Man must reach back to his source which is god. The intellect and intelligence should be used only for this purpose and not for enjoyment! Sacrifice and selflessness will evolve man to God!
