Televangelists Giving Non-Believers and Believers A Bad Name

Praying over people is a blessing and miracles do happen from God, but how do you know which televangelist to trust?

Why Are Some Televangelists Giving Christians A Bad Name?

So, I've given my life to Christ. I'm a "born again" Christian. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I'm new to learning, new to knowing what to do, and new to how to learn. A lot of new feelings and what do I do now?

Well, I thought maybe a good step would be to turn on the TBN. After all, that's a pretty well known church channel and trustworthy. Wasn't real crazy about a program they had on, and I'll be honest, I don't even recall what the program was. So, I flip through some other religious channels. Joyce Meyer was on. I fell in love with her immediately. It was as if she was talking directly to me and my problems. After Joyce was over, I was starting to watch the next program, after all, I was really getting into it now.

Well, let's say, I was "mesmerized" by it all. People were falling down, throwing walkers, crutches, you name it, and they were healed. I thought, "wow, this is awesome." After all, I was one of those many years ago, that was healed somewhat to that effect, not just as dramatic, when I had cancer. It was so powerful and amazing, I will never ever forget it. I got busy in life, and just never turned my life over like I should have. But, since God is so wonderful, he waited for me until I gave in. (awesome!)

Back to my story, (I have a tendency to get off track). I was watching Benny Hinn. Well, let's say, I really thought maybe he was genuine, but I didn't care for him very well at all. Still not sure on that guy.

Next one that I started to really enjoy was Jesse Duplantis. I watched him faithfully for almost 2 months. Then, he had on a 4 part series of where he went to heaven and back. Wow, I really wanted to hear what he had to say, after all, I was going to hear what heaven was like and that really really intrigued me. After the second show, I was stunned. I mean shocked and furious at the same time. When he said he was at lunch with his friend, and had an urge to go to his hotel room and a "time machine" whisked him away to heaven and brought him back by 6pm, I was almost ashamed to be a born again christian. It literally turned my stomach and made me so angry, that I wanted to call him myself.

Jesse Duplantis going to heaven in a spaceship just totally turned me off. If he would have said something more believing like he had a dream or something, then I may have continued to watch. I loved his personality and he was funny. I was thoroughly disappointed after watching his series of him going to Heaven in a spacecraft. You can see the video below. The bad part is, I thought he was very intriguing and interesting. He made me laugh with his words and just really brought me into the church life. I hate to say he's a liar, it's just hard to fathom. You'll have to watch the videos to see what you think. Forgive me if he's telling the truth.

Who Do You Trust Then For Guidance

I have come to my own conclusion on who to trust about who I should watch on television. I shared a little bit of my opinion, but that's what it is exactly, an opinion. I trust that God will let me know, as he already has, who is trustworthy and I have to trust God will lead the way and tell me. I prayed about it a lot because I am a born again Christian, and I don't know as much as I would like. I hunger for knowledge and guidance, but yet still seem to slip back. It's not hard to be a Christian and love Jesus, it's harder to know how; and that is what I am personally dealing with. These false teachers tell you one thing, but the Bible tells you something different. I trust the Bible and my heart. That's how you know who to trust.

Making God Look Bad

We already know that there are good and bad preachers. After all, religion and television is a huge business and a money maker for anyone. The sad part is, is that is making God look bad. Anyone out there who is trying to find the Lord or even think about it, is sadly taken back by all the negativity and all the false preachers. And that, in itself, is a crying shame. The Bible already talks about false preachers, so it's not a surprise, but it's still not right and trying to figure out who is trustworthy and who isn't, is a trick in itself.

The biggest and best false "teacher" I have ever found, was on 3ABN. I don't even know his name. All I remember is watching it and singing and really enjoying the program. Then, all the sudden, an 800 number came up to call and make a donation. I understand that, after all, they do have to broadcast all over the world and it's just a small station. Of course, I don't have a dime to give right now, but I understood the concept. This is what gives christians a BAD rap..the guy literally bowed his head, and asked for seniors to drain their savings accounts, widowers to find all the money they have, even if it's in a closet in their shoe box, poor people, everyone. It was to sow a 1,000 seed, and God will give back 10 fold.

That did it. I was done. I did not want to watch anymore religious channels on TV. I was confused, befuddled and angry. How can the FBI or anyone let this continue? Shouldn't that be illegal? I did do my research, and I continue to watch Joyce Meyer. She accounts for all her monies and she does a lot for people. I can't make it to church because of an illness I have struggled through for a long time, so the only way I can attend a church sermon, is through TV. Finding one to trust, is very frustrating and difficult.

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on this. Please, NO criticism against God. I will not approve. If you are a Non-believer, that is your business and I have nothing at all against you. I just don't want any trash talk. I respect you, you respect me.

I totally agree with you John… I don't know how the United States lets them still preach! I watch a lot of televangelists and preachers on TV, and I have quickly learned who is actually a true preacher and who is in it for the money.

I must say, that I used to totally trust TBN, but they do have a couple preachers on there that are not of God. When one of the preachers that I really liked, talked about going in a spaceship to heaven… That was it

I am so glad that we do not have this nonsense in the UK. These people would soon found themselves laughed off the screens if they tried it here - not to mention being sued for fraud!

I surely would not want to be him on judgement day. Not that I'm even close to being perfect!! Trust me! I'm afraid to be judged when it's my turn; but this, this is just downright sickening

Thank for your reply. Yes, it happens and it is still happening! Asking widows and widowers to get in their bank accounts and God will send them 10,000 in return! The same guy also said for parents to "get into your kids college fund."

      I was so freaking mad

Thanks for your comment- I really get infuriated when watching my religious channels. I have literally called and/or emailed asking why they continue to show these money hungry (not) preachers. I trust: Stephen Furtick and Joyce Meyer as of now. The one guy on late at night asking people to get into Their kids college fund is nothing but a ....

It only bothers me when they are telling the seniors to empty their bank accounts. And when they ask widowers to empty their pockets; I don't like that. That's not what God wants you to do

i find televangelists to be in the same category as politicians and used car salesmen. personally, it doesn't bother me as long as their consticuency is happy.

I love Joyce Meyer- I feel she is genuine. When you can't get out to church due to illness , all you have is tv evangeliSts to count on. You must be cautious to the program. !

I agree with you entirely and I'm really glad you wrote a hub on this.

There was a Derren Brown program on over here a few months ago about the power of suggestion and how it is so easy to make people believe they are healed - for a while.

And whilst I know some healings are genuine, I think most of these big preachers are just in it for the money. It's hard to believe they can have any real faith when they are so blatantly deceiving people and ripping them off. Very sad situation.

then do as many did with Robert Tilton and some others and pray to God to judge them He has removed many of them over the years because God's people raised up a cry for holiness. The problem is the majority of those who call themselves Christians believe the false church tale that you do not speak against anyone who professes to be christian. That is contrary to scripture. We are to judge everything we see , hear and do in the name of Christianity and if i does not pass the scripture test we are to expose it and not receive it and warn others. Look at all the warnings to us about this in the scriptures .

That lie is promulgated by those professing to be christian leaders that do not want anyone to call them out when they teach their lies. Many do this and one of the worst is the word of faith group. But it is rampant in the churches. 3 people in a meeting of 300 in were invited out of meetings because we would not accept a false teaching and objected while it is being taught, with proper scripture references. To their credit we were each called later by the sponsors of the meeting when they later saw the error themselves. But do remember that you must be willing to be judged by the same yardstick that you use.

This reluctance to stand against error is the reason the church system is such a mess and so many people have been turned away from Christianity. Its time to make a stand for TRUTH and if it upsets people so be it, it seems there some men a couple thousand years ago that upset most of the world with truth. and remember it cost some of them their lives. so how important is Real scriptural Christianity to you?

It is sad to see "evangelists" taking people's money, working crowds up into a frenzy of emotion to pad their pockets so that they can live in castles and fly where they will in their own private jets or partake of myriad luxuries only they can afford. How did the message the 12 apostles (the greatest evangelists of all time) carried to the world turn into this? When I read the stories of the Apostles I don't see them traveling in chariots or owning yachts paid for by their supporters...where did they miss it? or did they?

I absolutely agree. People will do anything for money, and that includes exploiting people's feelings and beliefs. It's unfortunate, really. I'm concerned how these people sleep at night knowing what they're doing. Great Hub!

That's very sad to hear and it hurts me that these things really do happen. That poor lady also has my prayers. May God bless her with an honest job.

I agree totally. It really makes me sick. In fact, I did take the liberty to call the 800 number on tv and speak my peace. The lady I spoke with felt really bad. She apologized and whispered, "I agree with you 100%, I'm just trying to support myself." I prayed for her and told her I understand. She knew exactly that they were creeps, but I felt bad for her as she was just trying to support her family and needed work. I told her I would pray for her to find an honest job.

People could really do these things for the money. It's all about money. I would say they are atheists who just dressed themselves in a christian robe to appear to be one. It's a very big business you see. Only a non-believer could do these things. They aren't afraid of God's judgment because they don't believe God exists and since many believe He does, the non-believer uses it to earn money. If you're a believer, you wouldn't fool anyone using God to earn money, right?
