Songs and Soul: A Spiritual Experience

Updated on March 15, 2016

"Every artist dips his brush into his own soul and paints his own nature into his pictures." - Henry Ward Beecher, 1813-87, Writer/Reformer

Spiritual Significance to Songs

Songs have visited my night dreams on a regular basis for almost five years now. Most of the songs are known songs already performed by artists, but some are entirely unheard of. These unheard of pieces consists of songs with lyrics, marches, or plain instrumental jamming. If I could remember them when I wake up, I could probably make a living out of writing songs!

I have asked people everywhere whether they have had the experience of dreaming of songs in their sleep. The answer has always been in the negative.

However, I still believe there is a small percentage of the population who do. The Hyperdictionary Dream dictionary, regarding dreaming of 'song' gives the following for a meaning:

"Hearing or write [sic] songs in your dream indicates that you are looking at things from a spiritual viewpoint. Your future path is a happy one with good health and much wealth. Consider the words to the song that you are dreaming about for additional messages."

For me, I believe dreaming of songs, or for that matter hearing songs from out of the blue, is a communication---through the soul---from the Divine and/or the departed.

Songs to me have, thus, taken a spiritual significance .

Since I am in my golden year, in terms of chronological age, let me list down 50 song titles or lyrics that I have dreamt of, at least once:

(Titles are in normal font; lyrics are in quotes.)

A. From the Divine or the Universe

1. "Oh can't you see? You belong to me? ..." / Every Breathe You Take

2. "And when I hold you in my arms I promise you.

You're gonna feel a love that's beautiful and new... " / Starting Over Again

3. "On the day that you were born the angels got together,

And decided to create a dream come true ... " / Close to You

4. "Trust in You with all of my heart,

To lean not on my own understanding ..." / Take Me Out of the Dark

5. Lord's Prayer

6. Agnus Dei

7. Lamb of God

B. From the Departed (e.g. Beloved, Friends, Father, Grandparents)

8. "Today while the blossoms still cling to the vine ..."

9. "There are times when I just want to feel your embrace, on a cold, cold night ..."

10. " ... devoted to you. I'll never hurt you, I'll never lie. I'll never be untrue ..."

11. "You're the meaning in my life. You're the inspiration ..."

12. "Is this the train to desert moon? is all she said ..."

13. "And now you're suddenly like a stranger. And you're leaving it all behind ..."

14. "Are you the one for me? Should I leave her behind?"

15. "I'll be by your side every moment. I will take care of you for life."

16. "My love, there's only you in my life. The only thing that's right."

17. "I can hear the sound of violins, long before it begins ..."

18. "For this dark and lonely room projects a shadow cast in gloom ..."

19. "I've been praying all my life to be with you, to have you by my side ..."

20. "Every night in my dreams, I see you I feel you

That is how I know you go on."

21. "Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much ... Are you still mine?"

(These last two songs' lyrics have a particularly soulful significance!)

22. "Love, soft as an easy chair ...

One love that is shared by two ... Ageless and ever evergreen."

23. "That everywhere I go, I'm never lonely. With her along, who could be lonely?"

24. "Heaven on earth, every time I kiss you, happiness when I look upon your face"

25. "You are everything to me. ... A beautiful memory,

A yesterday when we were always together"

26. "You gave me a reason for my being. And I've gone beyond existence ..."

27. "The closer I get to touching you, the closer I get to loving you

Cause every time I close my eyes you come alive ..."

28. "Now hold me in your arms like a bunch of flowers

... Loving you's the right thing to do"

29. "Babe, I'm leavin', I must be on my way"

30. "And now I'm falling, falling, catch me if you can ..."

31. "The daylight's fading slowly. The time with you is standing still ..."

32. "Don't forget our song. I promise to listen to it always ..."

33. "You think the only people who are people

Are the people who walk and think like you ..."

34. "Forever, I'll be yours forever you're mine ... Forever."

35. "Edelweiss, edelweiss, every morning you greet me ..."

36. "In heaven, there's a meeting place. And there I'll be waiting"

37. "Don't you worry about people hanging around. They ain't bringing us down..."

38. "If it's true you're making a slave of me, everything I do is all because of you ..."

39. "Once I was afraid I was petrified.

Thinking I could never leave without you by my side ..."

40. "Light oh light, in a cold, cold night ..."

41. "Shadows grow so long before my eyes. And they're moving across the page ..."

42. "And it's all behind us now cause we've learned somehow to live without each other ..."

43. "Tell me when is love wrong? ... Don't let go to heaven we will go ..."

44. "Highway run into the midnight sun. Wheels go round and round,

You're on my mind ..."

45. "Don't know what to do whenever you are near. Don't know what to say ..."

46. "Some people want diamond rings. Some just want everything

But everything means nothing, if I ain't got you ... "

47. "Come to see victory in a land called fantasy

Loving life for you and me. To behold to your soul it's ecstasy ... "

And last but not the least, which I dreamt of sleeping after this weekend's night out:

48. "And if you go and leave me, this I swear is true

My love will always be with you ... "

49. "I can't keep my eyes on the road knowing that she's inches from me ... "

50. "Your dreams will all come true. Right behind you is where I'll always be ..."

You may have noticed the songs spanning four generations, feasibly some even composed in the 20's. This makes it even more intriguing as the chances for my having heard them recently are so slim. These olds songs are no longer being played anywhere. My guess is that during sleep, our individual unconscious which is part of the collective unconscious, is able to communicate through our soul beyond space and time.

So next time a song plays from out of the blue, pay attention to its lyrics. These may be a message of assurance from the Divine or your beloved departed ones communicating to you. You may be amazed at the deliciousness of the significance of the song to the context of your personal experiences, when taken from this perspective.

Thanks, Amy, for tackling very important items in your comment. And for that, I’d like to delve into them one at a time towards the bottom of this comment.

First off, the summary: “Love is all there IS” is what I feel this everything is all about.

Love, peace and joy has become hard to find for most of us in this seemingly sorrowful world, as witnessed by our limited 5 sensory perception/empirical data-based “facts” (e.g. money, power, fame, accolades, etc.)

Soul/spirit … our angels, spirit guides, God/Love … whatever word people use based on their religious or philosophical orientation … They are connecting to us to affirm us of the Great Love, which seems to be absent in this world.

You may be creative/soulful/spiritual enough to have dreamt of a song for such a purpose of communication, but my feeling is that the experience will become more and more common to the human race. Thus, also creativity and imaginative endeavors. “Greater things than these you shall do.”

Love is all there IS, is what I have posted in my last two (rare) Facebook posts.

I may have had the necessity to dream songs this way because of the scarcity of affirmation/appreciation in my actual life experience. But the more we document/journal these delicious dreams/blessings/miracles, the more they will multiply and the more powerful God’s Presence becomes in our awareness, and so the more abundance in our lives. This is my present truth.

      You said:

First experience – more and more people will have these experiences and soon, it will be a celebration of Love for those among us, telling each other of these delicious dreams/experiences

Live band, for your partner and you – God will send you exactly what you need (e.g. ‘live band’); partner and you---Love one another, for love is supreme!

Familiar and beautiful – maybe the song was made by your soul especially for you; i.e., cannot be found anywhere in the www.

Save it to your phone – good practice! I used to do this when my old phone was simple enough to record on =)

I was made for you, Que Sera Sera – am not sure about the meaning esp. because this seems to be a Spanish term. Maybe you and your partner need nothing else except your love and loyalty/fidelity to each other and everything else will follow.

Can’t play an instrument or sing – e.g., hum on your phone and voice over the lyrics/words. Maybe you will find a free app on the www which allows for such a functionality, e.g., recording over recorded audio

Brought to tears - when Spirit moves, we are overcome with Joy

I've woken up this morning having my first experience like this. The song was being played by a live band and directly for my partner and I. I was brought to tears and woke up. The song was so familiar and beautiful that I wanted to listen to it. I could not find it anywhere because it doesn't exist.. I remember the lyrics and how the melody went so I've saved it to my phone by humming it and writing the lyrics. Unfortunately, I can't play an instrument or sing :( The song was called "I was made for you, Que Sera Sera". I was so excited to find this post and read about all these experiences. I definitely have woken up with a deep sense of being connected to my inner self and the universe. Thank you all x

Awesome! The spiritual energy on this hub seems to be building up on its own. For some reason, or by force of “synchronicity”, I happened to visit today. Also today, I read on the newspaper front page that “Thinking Out Loud” won the Grammy when it actually seems like the only song that struck my fancy among those recorded in 2015. Today, I had urgings to write a hub which is much like thinking out loud. Music, much like the other arts, it seems is being used to communicate a more universal language, across existing language barriers. The Divine is helping people communicate soul-to-soul beyond personalities.

It also so happened today that I noted what might have been the meaning of an abstract painting I made in 2007 (note that I’m not trained in painting as an art form neither in language beyond the basics). The significance the painting took was that the state of mankind’s collective unconsciousness at the time of the painting, based on my individual’s style of intuiting, the possibility that mankind’s collective unconsciousness is becoming “highly spiritual in nature, on the right path, …”.

Without your comment, I would not have thought of this comment, that significance would not have become explicit on the Web. You, we are Divine Grace expressing Itself through man’s humble form.

It may make sense for those who visit this page to know what type of personality I have: INFJ, HSP. It seems. It does not matter what personality type one has when Grace chooses you. Maybe these types just have the propensity to communicate spiritual messages through songs, … arts, dreams.

      Thank you, Edwin

Hi!. Well, guess I found the right place (or hub). I've been dreaming unheard of, original music with and without lyrics for over 20 years. Any genre, and in languages I don't even know exist. But mostly in my native Spanish. I can't play a thing on any instrument so, imagine that. For the past five years I've finally learned to train my subconscious to realize I'm dreaming new music and wake up. I'm getting good at "catching" most of the tunes, though it is truly hard once I awaken. So far, at least two of my dream songs have been recorded by pros and another is in the works. I, too, feel it is a calling from another realm, call it God or whatever. I marvelous blessing I don't deserve. Thanks for keeping this space.

Same here in believing these have spiritual significance just like you do. I have a feeling this may be common among HSP's or highly sensitive people. Thanks, Holly!

I have been dreaming for years with song. I knew they were spiritual messages. Im glad to know there are others that have these as well! Thanks for sharing. I just dreamed of Edelweiss from The Sound of Music.

      Thanks for sharing, Sausha.

You may want to consider visiting the Dream tab on the website to look up your dream symbols and for the word 'song' since you dreamt of a song.

You mentioned that it was a peaceful yet sad song. I believe God/Spirit/Our Creator, through the song, meant to provide you solace through your difficult experience. I had a similar experience where a dream through its symbols clearly came to provide me solace after the loss of a beloved. Wishing you the best, Quirinus

I Had A Dream Of Me Being On A Train With Half My Family And My Ex That I Certainly Talk To And Want Back. But On The Train With Us Before We Split Into Two Trains Was A Woman Named Asia And Her Ex Lover Was Named Asia But He Was A Boy. It Doesn't Sound Very Serious But It Was. The Woman's Ex Lover Was The Train Conductor And She Was The Entertainment For The Train I Remember The Song Saying " Oh Asia . Why Did You Treat Me So Bad .... Oh Asia Why Did You Make Me So Sad . The Song Sounded Like A Song From The 1950s . But She Kept Saying That Same Line. Suddenly Our Trains Separated And I Was No Longer With My Ex . Then Later The Train Crashed Into A Mans House Which Was Really Weird And The Woman Was Nowhere To Be Found But Throughout My Dream The Song Played In My Head . We Had To Stay A Night In The House Because Our Train Was Broken. Comes To Find Out My Ex Was In The House Along With My Family. I Just Couldn't Find Him . The Song Still Playing In My Head As It Relates To My Current Situation With My Ex. While Looking For Him I Woke Up . I've Googled This Song To See If It Exists. Maybe While I Was Sleep It Played On My Tv . But There Is No Such Song . The Song Was So Peaceful Yet Sad . It Was Beautiful Even Though I Don't Listen To That Type Of Music I Wish I Could Hear It Once More .

I like this article a lot. I have had infrequent (not as many as the author) music dreams that later represented profound spiritual truth although at the time I was only vaguely aware of what. One such song occurred in a dream that was the most vivid, beautiful and loving dream I can recall. It was "I Believe". I BELIEVE FOR EVERY DROP OF RAIN THAT FALLS , A FLOWER GROWS.

I f we make acceptance, forgiveness and helping others our daily

practice, the worst events , with patience will blossom into something even more beautiful than you imagined. I've seen it; I've lived it.

It is God's Energies of Love (Yin) and Light(Yang) in action IF and when we rise above the dark event.

Put another way, the wise spiritual choice is to learn to " dance in the rain". Well done, Quirinius.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Moesky. So glad to hear there's a handful of us. You sound like you have an open line of communication with your True Self/God Within/Soul or however way you call Him/Her. Makes me so happy for you. I wouldn't be surprised if you're all that artistically gifted!

I regularly dream of songs and music, and sometimes I remember them well enough to actually try to play them when I'm awake. Doesn't always work - often the essence is lost, the emotion that made it special in my dream. But I am a songwriter anyway, so it doesn't surprise me that my subconscious stays busy. And I'm an active dreamer too, many lucid and flying dreams. Sometimes I've heard music so beautiful that I've woken up in tears. Rarely dream of songs by others though - the music I hear always seems original. I love the experience.

Thanks for gracing the hub with your comment, pennyofheaven!

It gladdens the heart to know more of us are experiencing this soulful phenomenon. Indeed we are seeing the dawn of the Light Era or the era of enlightenment upon us.

Music of the spheres I often call them. Especially the ones I have not heard in my waking life. Music in my dream state or waking state seem to always have messages that I resonate with.

Hi LeeAnn40, Our soul/spirit is always there to guide and affirm us. Spiritual development techniques just make us more conscious of our connection.

It really is a wonderful experience that sometimes takes a humorous twist especially for one who is too serious (that's me=). Thanks for sharing! -Quirinus

My subconscious has started to communicate with me through songs on

a fairly regular basis. This is very new to me but I wondered if it happens to anyone else. It is always about something I struggle with day to day consciously and it is like my subconscious send me the answers through song lyrics. Totally new experience for me since starting to do some spiritual development.

Wow this is a very interesting train of thought. I cannot say that I have dreamt a song but very often I awake with a song on my mind !! Great hub !
