The Skeleton and the Worm (A Lesson Regarding Guilt)
A skeleton flew out of my closet the other day, screaming, "You are a worm--you slimy piece of nothing! How can you even look in the mirror when you remember that mistake you made ten years ago? I am going to harass you the rest of your life and let that mistake overwhelm you to the point where it will drive you crazy! Don't you EVER forget what you did. I won't let you!"
I replied, "To whom are you speaking?"
"To YOU, Sparklea, YOU WORM!"
"I'm sorry," I said, but Sparklea is dead. You are only speaking to a vessel named Sparklea. There is a new Resident living in this 'house' now. You will have to take up the matter with Him. I have no part in it any more."
"And who might THAT be?" the skeleton sneeringly inquired.
"It it Jesus Christ," replied the Sparklea vessel.
"Let me speak to Him!"
Jesus said to the skeleton, "Sparklea is dead now. She is free. No matter what she has done, I covered that when I took on the sins of the world. This 'house' is clean, and you cannot haunt it again. You see, I now indwell this vessel--for all eternity. In Me, she is a new creature, and all is forgiven.
She has received My life, and I now live through her. Total trust in Me has resulted in total peace of mind for her."
"But, but..." replied the skeleton, "what makes YOU so great? So what if you live in Sparklea? Who ARE you, and who is she to you?"
"I," replied Jesus, "am the Light of the world, and Sparklea is my offspring. I created her. My saving her was not dependent on anything she did. All she ever had to do was to accept my free gift of salvation, which she has done. Therefore, she is resting in Me."
"But," argued the skeleton, "she has made so many mistakes! She is nothing! Don't you remember that day she walked around hanging her head because of what she did? She was so miserable that she wanted to die."
"I have no recollection of that, Mr. Skeleton. You see, when I died on the cross, all that garbage was totally washed away. I have absolutely no remembrance of any sin she has committed."
"Now, wait a minute," the skeleton persisted, "I have ALWAYS been able to knock Sparklea to the ground in total defeat and guilt when I have loomed out at her, even since she became a Christian. Explain that one!"
"Before," replied Jesus, "she had the misconception that she had to STRIVE for perfection in order to please Me. But now she knows who she is. It is true that she can be knocked to the ground during her life on this earth. However, she is dead to self and abiding in Me. Each negative experience that throws her to the ground is actually a 'seed,' working for good and producing fruit. Each adversity is now making her stronger, rather than weaker, because she is learning valuable lessons. If she has moments of despair, I am in them with her. She can now make the choice to get up, brush herself off and go on. She doesn't need you any more to remind her of her past. This Sparklea-vessel is now 'being' instead of 'doing.' In Me, she is perfect."
"Perfect!?" gasped the skeleton. "You have GOT to be kidding! I KNOW her life! Do you think that I am the ONLY skeleton in her closet? There are enough skeletons in there to accommodate a graveyard!"
Jesus replied, "Sparklea does not have to answer to you or anyone regarding her past. It is gone forever, wiped away. She is now totally dependent on Me, and no one and nothing else. She is clean and as white as snow. She is sitting in Heavenly places with me at this very moment."
Jesus continued, "What you don't seem to realize, Mr. Skeleton, is that Christians who feel guilty are putting themselves through unnecessary torture. Since Sparklea has finally realized that this is not necessary, she desires to share this with others."
"You mean she's telling other people to ignore us skeletons?!"
"But she will put us out of business!" the skeleton cried, slowly backing away.
Jesus' reply was, "You have absolutely no business abiding the closets of My people. They abide in Me, and there is no room for you in their lives. You are wasting your time."
The skeleton retreated back to the closet, hanging his head, and mumbled something to his cohorts.
The house shook, as hundreds of bones vacated the storage space.
I walked over to the empty closet, and I shut the door.
Blessings, Sparklea :)
