Spiritual concept of Karmic Account
The word Karma, which is used so commonly, generally means deeds or acts done by us. It is also a commonly misunderstood word. In fact, thoughts that arise in the mind, words uttered by us or act done by us all qualify as karmas. It happens many a time that a thought may arise in the mind but it is not put into action. Such a thought, even though not materialized, acts as a deed, when karmic account is considered. Such a thought sends bad or good energy vibrations to a person for whom it is intended.
Karmic account is an intangible account which has the details of the deeds performed by us in the previous births. Such deeds of the previous births are responsible for what we have and experience in this life. They decide what our parents, siblings, spouses, relatives or friends will be. They also decide our profession or career as well as our socio-economic status. In general, they determine what we are in particular.
Our karmic account has the details of our good as well as bad deeds, which together make our destiny. A bad or negative thought is a bad deed; similarly, bad, abusive or derogatory words uttered by us and harmful acts done by us are bad deeds too. The bad and good deeds performed in the previous births influence our present destiny. If we have performed acts of generosity, acts of helping others, acts of giving happiness to others and fulfilled our responsibilities towards family and others in the previous births, we will be happy, well-off, have a good family and relatives in the present birth. Similarly, if we have performed acts of hurting or harming others, acts of cheating or exploiting others, acts of violence in the previous births, we will have unhappiness and suffering in this birth.
During the process of interaction with others, we create accounts of debit or credit with them. The reasons, for which a relationship goes well or not, are in the karmic accounts that have been accumulated in the past. The strongest relationships that we have now were established in the past births. We know each other in other lives in different roles. The daughter of some births ago returns now as a father; the best friend may come back as sister. When there is nothing more to receive or give, the path between the two souls separate by death, break-up, divorce or simply by loss of contact. An example of this is our school friends, whom we were close in the school days but are not in touch today.
We also create a network of persons, close or distant, who give or receive happiness or sorrow to us on the basis of our previous karmic accounts. For example, a couple is blessed with a son, whom they bring up with joy and care. They leave nothing to make his life happy and comfortable. But, unfortunately, he dies at the young age of 25 years, leaving his parents inconsolably sad and unhappy. All this happened due to the karmic account. The parents must have done some great harm to him in the past births, which he came to settle in the present birth as a son.
So, according to principal of karmic account, no one can escape the effects of our karmas done in the past. It becomes obligatory to settle the accounts of debit or credit created by us with other souls in the present birth; otherwise we will have to settle them in coming births.
Karmic account has an important characteristic that if we have done a few bad deeds and many good ones, the effects of bad ones will not be condoned but we will have to face its bad effect at all costs. Bad karmas are like liabilities. Therefore, we must settle all our past accounts in the present birth and at the same time, do our best to avoid creating new ones.
How to settle old accounts and avoid creating new ones—
Avoid creating a bad thought against anybody— If someone insults you, you don’t like it and think in your mind – why is he doing this to me? You have created a new loan. In your past life, you had given an insult to the individual, which he comes to return you. Instead of accepting it, you question it, thereby creating a newer and bigger account. Let us not return hundred thousands of insults but just credit them all. One day the end will come when the account is settled.
If you ask your neighbor to verbally abuse you five times each morning, he would say that he has no time for it. You only encounter insults if you have a pending account. Nobody will insult you if there is no account and if you do have a pending account, no one will leave you alone.
Remembering Supreme Soul— Karmic accounts will always work as supposed. Remembering the Supreme Soul will strengthen our inner soul or conscience. We will, therefore, have more strength to clear old accounts and not to create new ones. For example, if someone falls in love with a lady, he creates a karmic account. His love is not reciprocated by the lady; he undergoes suffering. This is also a karmic account. If he engages himself with remembrance in the suffering, gradually his attraction for the lady will go away. His suffering will become less and less since his account is getting cleared. There will come a time when his attraction for the lady will be over as soon as his account is settled.
Practice of meditation—The regular practice of meditation develops the attributes of tolerance and mindfulness in the practitioner. The individual learns not to react to the hurts of others but instead responds with love and compassion. Thus, he clears the old accounts and doesn’t create new ones. With love and compassion for the person, who has hurt or harmed us, we can change his attitude to a positive one.
Fill yourself with love and compassion—If somebody hurts or harms us because of the settlement of previous account, we should proactively respond by showing love and compassion for that individual. We should express compassion for him because he is clearing an old account with us instead of reacting to him harshly. The energy of love and compassion sent by us will heal him and he will realize his folly. This will help settle the account more easily.
The bottom line is that we are ourselves the creators of our destiny by how we perform out deeds. If we perform our deeds according to the divine guidelines, we will create good destiny. Many have a misconception that a divine power makes our destiny but, as a matter of fact, He helps us make a good destiny provided we follow His advice. If we follow His advice carefully, we will not create new accounts but will settle the old ones. We should happily accept and face hardships and sufferings, which come our way, with an attitude that we are clearing our old accounts.
