Spiritualism in End Times

Updated on April 13, 2013

by Amber Maccione

Have you ever heard the saying: I’m not religious; I’m spiritual? Have you ever wondered what they meant by “spiritual”? I think most people mean it as saying that they believe in God, but don’t do the whole church routine. They may say some prayers now and again, read the Bible once in away, and quote some Scriptures to back up their way of living. But what most of these people don’t know is that there is a meaning behind spiritualism that the Bible explains as something not to dabble in.

So what is the real meaning behind the word spiritualism? Webster’s dictionary defines it as the view that spirit is a prime element of reality, a belief that spirits of the dead communicate with the living usually through a medium, and a movement comprising religious organizations emphasizing spiritualism.

Mediums are people who are supposedly linked to the spirit world – the world of those that once lived and have now passed over or are trying to pass over. They are said to be able to communicate with the spirit world and pass on messages to those still living.

What does the Bible have to say about mediums?

Leviticus 19:31 (ESV) – Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the Lord your God.

Leviticus 20:27 (ESV) – A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (ESV) - When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

Revelation 22:15 (ESV) – Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

Revelation 21:8 (ESV) – But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

1 Chronicles 10:13-14 (ESV) - So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

Have you dabbled in spiritualism?

And there are much, much more to be found in the Bible about spiritualism in God’s eyes. But one of the signs of end times is that there will be a rise of spiritualism in the world. If we just look at America alone, it has infiltrated our lives more than just the common fortune teller at the fair, palm reader on the corner of the street, our daily horoscope in the newspaper, or meditation (not prayer). Our TVs and movie theaters are filled with “spiritualism” shows:

  • Medium
  • Crossing Over with John Edwards
  • Vampire Diaries
  • 666 Park Ave
  • Twilight
  • Harry Potter
  • Ghost Whisperer
  • Ghost Hunters
  • Decoding the Past
  • Ghost Encounters
  • Destination Truth
  • Ghost Hunters International
  • Paranormal Activity
  • Exorcism Movies (too many to list)
  • Ghost Adventures
  • Ghost Stories
  • Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files
  • Long Island Medium
  • Dead Files
  • School Spirits
  • Paranormal Highway

And on, and on, I could go. Our culture has become obsessed with the spiritual. Why is this? Because we are all spiritual beings and want to know what happens when we die – possibly what awaits us on the other side. The thing is, God created us in His image. So if we want answers, we should go to the one whom created us – not to people whom God in His Word has told us to beware of.

One Christian author that I was obsessed with when I was a teenager was Frank Peretti. He wrote books on the spiritual world (fiction). He painted a picture as to why God would say not to dabble in spiritualism. Those “dead people” or ghosts or paranormal happenings are not what we think or what these mediums and hunters say they are. They are demons that deceive us to draw us away from God.

So, in the end days, spiritualism will be on the rise. Is it today? I think so. There is more of it today than I ever saw back in the 1980’s and 90’s when I was growing up. God tells us to stay away from spiritualism. I would advise we heed His warning. God’s Word is where we should go for our answers.
