Stations of the Cross - What Protestants Can Learn from the Catholic Faith | Scriptural and Traditional Guides

Updated on March 25, 2016

As a former Catholic, one of the items I continue to cherish is the stations of the cross. Before I became Catholic, I had never heard of the stations of the cross. It has been years since I was Catholic yet I still look to the stations of the cross for guidance. You see, the stations of the cross simply are the various traumas that mankind imposed upon the son of God. These traumas many of us can relate to. Most of us have felt betrayed at some point in time, ridiculed, injured (albeit perhaps not tortured physically). The stations of the cross remind us that Jesus' life parallels our life's challenges.

To this day at church, I am hunting for the stations of the cross. I truly miss the visual comfort of the many chapters of Jesus' life. It is perhaps more my age than wisdom in being able to see the many similarities. It is by grace that I am comforted through these images. Here are a couple of some of the finest examples of the artful rendering of the stations of the cross.

You see, like Jesus, we all are burdened with a cross of some magnitude that we must bear. For some, the cross is lighter, for others, the cross is mammoth. I pray whatever your cross is my friend that you are able to look at the stations, hear the different traumas Jesus endured for us and be comforted in God's love.

"Stations of the Cross" Remind Me I Am Not Alone - What We Can Learn from the Catholic Faith

Background - About Me - Religious Mutt:

I was raised a Protestant - an absolute Protestant "mutt" - from Baptist to Methodist to Episcopal. Baptist because my Mother didn't drive and the church was across the street. Methodist because that was the church my Grandparents belonged to. Later I attended Episcopal and about 10 years ago I became Catholic. After college, I read the Quran almost daily. So essence, my religion is truly a very complicated tapestry.

Share My Love of the Stations of the Cross

There are some great articles about the stations of the cross. The artwork and the photos are endless. I cannot do them justice so I will simply link to the very best IF you want more details.

The stations of the cross for me are the direct connection that God is there with me. I am not alone. God wouldn't abandon his son. And so too, God will not abandon me or you.

God is powerful enough to stop and/or create anything. After all, he did create the earth. If you are unsure about this, I challenge you to sit down to dinner and then answer IF there was a chef for that meal!

"Stations of the Cross" Guide Me

The stations of the cross are not just "icons" and beautiful pieces of work. The stations exemplifies our life here on earth. God permits these injuries. The mystery as the Catholics would say is in God's knowledge - it is beyond our human comprehension.

The stations of the cross showcase the hatred and misunderstanding and the lack of responsibility. Each chapter of our life, we are hung or crucified. Sometimes we are front and center with all the media. Sometimes we are next to the center stage. Most often we are watchers, contributors, betrayers, or someone who simply washes their hands.

Which one are you living today?

Who do you want to be?

I desire to be the one giving wine.

I desire the one helping carry the cross.

And who is the worst - the one who betrayed? The one who denied? The one who washed their hands?

"The early set of seven scenes was usually numbers 2,3,4,7,6 and 14 from the list below. The standard set from the 17th to 20th centuries has consisted of 14 pictures or sculptures depicting the following scenes:

  13. Jesus' body is removed from the cross (Deposition or Lamentation)
  14. Jesus is laid in the tomb and covered in incense.

Although not traditionally part of the Stations, the Resurrection of Jesus is sometimes included as a fifteenth station."

Scriptural Stations of the Cross

  2. Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested,

Thankfulness Says Allot

In our household, we pray at each and every meal - even when we are out in public. We don't pray to be noticed, we pray to give thanks.

And sometimes, we even pray before meetings - as we did last week - and the new client even asked - it wasn't us! (side note: I work with family member).

When I listen to awards I literally cheer when I hear God thanked. I don't care what God they are referencing. I just cheer when God is acknowledged.

I cry inside when I hear God Our Father referenced as "our creator". God wants a personal relationship with us. As a Father, Mother, how would it make you feel to be called the women who bore you or the biological father. Both are correct but not respectful of a true relationship.

Daily Devotional and Reading the Bible

The bible is God's way of speaking with us. If you wish to improve your relationship with God, set a new goal to read the bible daily. If you don't know where to begin, start with the Psalms. God wants you to know that you are loved. Listed to the right is a little book that lends new light about the Psalms. Written in a manner to connect with you, together with the bible, this book is a book that I have often given as a gift. I share these articles and gifts with you along with my prayers that you too might find the Stations of the Cross and see the parallel and the connection to Christ Jesus.

      Peach Purple,

I never knew about the stations of the cross until I was middle age. I find this helpful in understanding life and how my humanity is interconnected to Christianity.

You were fortunate to have known them and prayed and most importantly introduced to the mysteries.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing - it means allot to me.

Excellent, beautiful pictures. Welcome to Gods hubpages! There are many good writers here and a wealth of information also. I was raised in a Catholic church and served on the altar for several years. I've done the novena and occasionally I say Rosary still. My best advice is stay in touch with the Holy Spirit of God and the light will shine down always. Feel the love God has for all whom will have faith and trust Him, He does love us and only wants the best for believers. One God, One faith, all are welcome. Repent and revive, renew and be refreshed. Blessings

This was a completely new revelation for me! I love it! And a powerful reminder in your words:

"Which one are you living today?

Who do you want to be?

I desire to be the one giving wine.

I desire the one helping carry the cross.

And who is the worst - the one who betrayed? The one who denied? The one who washed their hands?"

This reminded me that in each moment, I must choose whose example I will follow! What a wonderful and insightful hub! Thanks so much for sharing!
