We listen to the direction of YeHoVaH through His Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit). Reread Yochanan (John) 15:1-11 [above], also Yochanan (John) 10:27 says, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." We are persuaded to or convinced to listen to the voice of Yeshua as He tells us to guard or keep the commands of YeHoVaH by abiding in or staying in Ruach HaKodesh.
We are receptive to obedience because we believe and have faith. Romiyim (Romans) 1:5 says, "Through whom we have received favor and office of the emissary for belief-obedience among all the nations on behalf of HIs Name." Our receiving and obeying is His activity.
This is not a legalistic obedience, Yeshua was never legalistic in His obedience; but, it is obedience nonetheless. Read again Yochanan (John) 15:1-11 [above].
If you are a Believer and Follower of Yeshua, you are free to obey, meaning, you are not slaves to sin. It is in obedience that we are the most free, meaning, we are free to be human beings as YeHoVaH intended us to be.
To be Torah observant is not to live daily as though we were praying to or prey of sin, it is being receptive of what YeHoVaH, who gave us His Torah, wants us to be, it is following the voice of the Great Shepherd, who is the Living Torah, and it is allowing Ruach HaKodesh to take up residence within us so that we have that great help that we need in every time of need.
