Psychology is typically regarded as a "soft" science because of the lack of substantive proof that any of its theories are actually true. Because psychology is a science of the mind, variables include emotions and behaviour which are not directly observable. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSA) has been called a work of fiction by its critics and many regard psychology as a pseudo-science.

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is considered the father of psychoanalysis. He was an agnostic Jew, a cocaine addict and depressive who accepted the theories of Charles Darwin. Freud experimented with the occult and there are many similarities between Freud’s psychoanalysis and the occult doctrines of the Cabala. His deep unconscious teaching involved a process of regression under hypnosis in order to uncover repressed sexual desires in the subconscious mind which he believed were the primary cause of people’s problems.Freud described religion as an illusion and compared it to childhood neurosis. In particular he was very hostile towards Christianity and rejected the biblical doctrine that sin is the root of the problem of the human condition.

Carl Jung (1875-1961) introduced Jungian analytic psychology and his theory of the ‘collective unconscious’. He was an adept who was heavily into the occult having ‘spirit guides’, two of which were called Philemon and Basilides. Both Freud and Jung were members of the Society of Psychical Re-search in London (SPR) and the American Society for Psychical Re-search in New York. Jung saw his psychology as a contemporary counterpart to Gnosticism. At one point Jung felt that his house became crowded with spirits which he concluded were the spirits of the dead. 'From that time on, the dead have become ever more distinct for me as the voices of the Unanswered, Unresolved, and Unredeemed'. ( There is a link between Freud, Jung and Theosophy since both men were associated with the Viennese Blue Lodge of Theosophy. Alice Bailey, founder of The Lucis Trust (formerly Lucifer Trust) took instruction from Jung . Both Freud and Jung’s alternative to the problem of sin was inner healing through the very shaky hypothesis of psychiatry.

I only mention the above very briefly because it is on this foundation of sand (Matthew 7/24-27) that the teachings of Agnes Sanford (1897-1982), the so called "Mother of the Inner Healing Movement" are built. Sanford began to introduce Jungian psychology and occult ideas into the church under the guise of Christianity in the 1940s. In her books there are many references to Jung and she used identical terminology. Sanford was a leading figure in the Charismatic movement in the US during the 1960s and 70s and it was through her influence that inner healing took hold of Christianity. Inner healing is now widespread within many denominations, but it must be rejected because its roots are in psychology and the occult - if the root is bad then the whole tree is bad. (Matthew 7/17-20; Luke 6/43)

Mrs. Sanford taught that the principles of prayer and healing are universal—that is, they are included in all religions, yet transcend all religions.

In her Book The Healing Light, Sanford’s unbiblical pantheistic beliefs are very obvious. God is a life force, a form of energy like electricity; "the original force that we call God (p 30)....we are part of God (p 34)....He's in nature, and He is nature (p 35)....I was conscious of oneness with God, and therefore with the snake which God had made" (p 69). Sanford claimed to have had an out-of-body experience and went back to the time of her pre-existent soul.

Agnes Sandford’s books are used by the Luciferian Theosophical Society, as her mysticism is ancient occult practice.

Ellel Ministries is just one of the many so called Christian ministries involved with inner healing. Ellel combines inner healing and deliverance with the dangerous teaching by Derek Prince about generational curses which apply the curses of Deuteronomy 28 to believers. Ellel is a highly sophisticated non-denominational organisation whose Founder & International Director is Peter Horrobin.

Peter Horrobin teaches that Christians can be inhabited by demons, not on any scriptural grounds, but on the grounds of "experience". He argues: On the premise that demonic deliverance is unknown in secular society we must conclude that deliverance is only applicable to Christians. Below is a summary of Peter Horrobin’s teaching in this area which is taken from ‘Sex and the Demonic’ (

When theology contradicts experience then there is something wrong with our understanding of theology. We must go back to scripture and seek God for His understanding. Regarding generational sins, Nehemiah 1 says “I and my ancestors we have sinned”. Generational sins can be dealt with by a breaking or cutting of the generational line through confession and repentance of ancestral sins. The word ‘possess’ means to own so that Christians are bought with a price - the blood of Jesus which makes us His possession. However because we are possessed by Jesus this does not make us free of the demonic because Jesus takes us just as we are. Just as in a house purchase when we take possession of a property –that property may have termites and we have to take action to get rid of them – i.e. we deliver the house of termites. Deliverance is part of the sanctification (cleaning up) process. Jesus overcame Satan personally but the world is under the control of the evil one.

From a Biblical perspective there are several problems with Peter Horrobin’s teaching:

· There is no biblical precedent for casting out demons from believers. It is not part of the Apostles teaching. Demons were always cast out of unbelievers in the Bible.

· There is no record in the Bible of any believer ever being demon possessed.

· Experience is no substitute for scripture. The Bible tells us not to "lean on our own understanding’"(Proverbs 3/5) – our own experience cannot be relied upon. Interestingly, Agnes Sanford also said that "experience comes before theology’"

· The assumption Peter Horrobin makes is that there is something wrong with our theology when it does not fit into our experience. We cannot read into scripture something that is not there (this is eisegesis - making scripture fit what we want it to say).

· The Bible says that we have received forgiveness of sins: In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. (Ephesians 1/7) The only time we need forgiveness is when we sin in the future – all past sins are blotted out on conversion. See also Acts 10/43, 26/18 etc.

· The house purchase metaphor is contradictory. What Peter Horrobin is saying is that Jesus Christ takes possession of us ‘just as we are’ i.e. any demons that we may have had remain after conversion. If we go back to Peter Horrobin’s own metaphor of the house; when we do take legal possession of a literal house, the old inhabitant has to move out. If anyone has a demon by biblical definition they are possessed i.e. owned: Strong’s No. 1139 daimonízomai (from 1142 /daímōn) means to be possessed by a demon. The Bible says nothing about joint possession – we cannot be possessed by two owners, Jesus Christ and demons at the same time. The ‘termites’ as Horrobin puts it, are not the owners of that house, they do not possess it, and so by very definition they cannot be demons. Christ does not take possession of an old house with termites, the new birth and indwelling of the Holy Spirit necessitates that we become a ‘new creation’ in Christ Jesus. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5/17) We have passed from darkness to light: Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. (Ephesians 5/7-11) Paul says that we ‘are light’ present tense. Paul would have been very remiss if he forgot to tell us that we needed to be delivered from demon possession. Paul simply said that we should consciously walk in the light and shun evil.

· The Apostle Paul was very clear about where his focus was: But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead. (Philippians 3/13) Paul counted his past ‘achievements’ in worldly terms literally as refuse. If Paul considered past things as refuse then past painful memories are also refuse. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ. (Philippians 3/8)

· The Bible makes no connection whatsoever between sanctification and deliverance: (Strong's Greek: 38. ἁγιασμός [hagiasmos] — 10 Occurrences: Romans 6/19,22; 1 Corinthians 1/30; 1 Thessalonians 4/3-8; 2 Thessalonians 2.13; 1 Timothy 2/15; Hebrews 12/14; 1 Peter 1/2)

· Transformation of Christian believers is achieved by the renewal of the mind: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12/2)

· Luke 11/24-26 and Matthew 12/43-45 indicate that only an empty "house" can be occupied by demons.

· It is correct that the world is under the control of the evil one, but Christians are not of the world. (John 7/14; 15/19; 17/16)

· Peter Horrobin’s teaching on cutting generational ties : “There may be situations where people are still struggling. There may be other generational powers, other rituals that have taken place which we haven’t yet faced, but in all cases you work through it bit by bit”.

In many instances the same vulnerable people keep going back for more and more so called "deliverance", either for the same or related issues. It is a vicious circle that brings bondage and not the freedom promised by Jesus Christ. It is also worth noting that in the Bible no one went back to Jesus Christ for repeated sessions of deliverance.

· Deliverance focuses on self, but the Bible tells us to ‘think about these things’ …..whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4/8)

· The Bible says that it is the truth that will set you free: If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8/32)

· This teaching of inner healing is a basic denial of the faith. It necessitates the need to do other things which are extra biblical to become free instead of believing that Jesus Christ has set us free.

The two quotes below are from very reliable teachers, their sites are well worth a visit:

Simple logic says that probing into the past to uncover “lost memories” of former traumas, as in psychotherapy or the Christian brand known as “inner healing,” is a vain pursuit for two reasons: 1) one can never be sure of the accuracy of such memories, due to a lack of objective verification; and 2) if one “lost memory” could have such a heavy influence upon the person’s thinking, emotions and conduct, who can say that there may not be other “memories” of equal or greater importance that likewise need to be recovered and “worked through” endlessly?

The same is certainly true of the overwhelming majority of so called 'deliverance ministry' - it is purely psychological with absolutely no biblical precedent for casting demons out of saved Christians. Deliverance manifestations and Toronto manifestations alike mainly come from the same source - the human soul. It is a matter of hypnotic induction used by Satan to mislead people. Jacob Prasch

Satan would love us to fall into bondage, witchcraft and New Age occult beliefs and practices such as regression, guided imagery and visualisation, and this is precisely what inner healing involves. Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11/14) Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Peter 5/8)

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord. (1 Corinthians 1/26-31)

The above verses show us that there are many people who have suffered damage in a worldly sense prior to accepting Jesus Christ as Lord. Those of us who are "damaged goods" from a worldly perspective should be incredibly joyful and thankful to be chosen by Him. That damaged person is dead and gone so why would we want to dwell on past hurts and or failures. We are a new creation in Christ Jesus if we trust Him and are born again by His Spirit.

Peter Horrobin is a man who follows his own preferences and ungodly ideas. He left his wife for a younger woman some years ago and is living in an adulterous marriage. Jesus Christ teaching is very clear - divorce and remarriage are adultery. Paul writes that we should not associate with people who indulge in sexual sin (1 Corinthians 5:9).

Jesus Christ: I say unto you whoever divorces his wife except for unchastity makes her commit adultery and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery' (Matthew 5: 32).

Great articles..I dont know the organization or the man horrobin but its a real crock when he says come to Blairmore to be with God. If people really want to be close to God, put down the watercolours and pottery clay and visit the inner cities of the UK or help out in the soup kitchens.Jesus helped prostitutes, beggars and the sick, not spent his time painting and basket weaving in some grand idyll. What a crock the ellel organization is.

      Hi, excellent article. Thanks!

The church I attend has partnered with Ellel Ministries and I am doing some research. I have read several articles about Ellel and deliverance ministries in general, as well as their own teaching manuals. I have come to the conclusion it's not Biblically sound and my church should have nothing to do with it.

I was wondering, in my research I read that there was a BBC documentary which aired I believe May 21, 1995 which describes Peter Horrobin pouring Ribena down the pants of a man to cast out a demon. Do you know anything about this documentary? or is there any way to get my hands on it?

I have never heard of the Fuel Project and I would have to see the materials to give a definitive opinion. I would avoid anything to do with Ellel. God bless tx

I have a question. I recently stumbled upon some Christian videos produced by a group called the Fuel Project. It seems solid and biblically grounded at first glance, until I realized the person/people behind it have some sort of connection to Ellel Ministries. Is it possible, in your estimation, that the products put out by Fuel Project might also be suspect?

How does one handle the situation when good God-fearing friends are deeply involved with the work of Ellel without causing a rift? It isn't easy and becomes, in my case, the elephant in the room. It is not so simple these days to separate oneself from the subtle false teachings that abound within the Christian churches and ministries, we either put up with some things which are anathema to us or end up being vilified and called rude names. btw my sister and brother-in-law were deeply involved with Ellel, on the healing team etc. they are now separated/divorced I don't know which as I have no contact with them due in large measure to Ellel. Avoiding false prophets and wrong doctrines is getting harder by the minute.

True Christians cannot be demon possessed K - this is absolutely disgusting. Don't let these idiots destroy your faith - pray to the Lord for his help. I suggest you watch the following God bless you treena x

I was sent to Ellel by my minister for a healing retreat and whilst there I was told that there was a demon looking out of my eyes. They couldn't do anything to get rid of it and neither could I. After I gave this news to my mi inter he became reluctant to help me.

Ellel took my faith. Or maybe it's the demon.

Thank you, I went to a free taster day at Ellel a few years ago and felt that some of the teaching was wrong and was frustrated because there were many vulnerable people attending there. I befriended a young lady who asked me to pray for her, so of course I did and not long after I was approached and asked not pray for anyone else as I may have an unclean spirit! Only the trained ministers were allowed to pray.

Great article and great research. Ellel is a cult. It is largely based on false hope and false promises. It has torn a friendship apart (for me personally). This is a hallmark of a cult: separating the members from their family, friends, and the public. Mr. H. has the system set up in his favor so he is always right in the eyes of his followers. Jesus hung out with prostitutes and tax collectors. Look, there is nothing more Christian to do than to love everyone unconditionally - even family members that have sinned. Hey, we are all sinners here - the goal is to give it up to Christ and accept foregiveness and salvation. And that can be difficult since you don't have control over the process other than "belief." There is no formula; no amount of pew rent can save your soul (not by deeds!). This is hard for a lot of folks since it takes a leap of faith. Granted, walking in the truth will bear a lot of good fruit - but that is the result. People, wake up and realize that Mr. H. is not following in the footsteps of Jesus but making his own way. He's smart and powerful, but twisted. I cannot wait for my friendship to be restored one day and hopefully soon!

I know much better than you think Anon - I have actually been through a marriage break up myself! The private life of overseers is extremely relevant... "Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery" (Luke 16/18). These are NOT my words they are the words of Jesus Christ. This disqualifies Horrobin from ministry! Ellel is a work of the flesh. It is unbiblical in every respect - none of the practices of Ellel are found in the New Testament. Many are deceived because they are looking for healing. I can say with confidence that nothing good comes from the flesh. God bless you.

Just one or two points. You did say something personal about Peter Horrobin. You personally judge him regarding his marriage breakup. You were not there. I don't know him but have been through a marriage break up. My husband left me for another woman. It is not what I would have wished at the time but it was the right thing to do. You sound fortunate that it has never happened to you. Ellel is a God based ministry, what do you really know of what good they are doing in people's lives, really know? No offence, God Bless

Can you me the scriptures to prove your point? This was never taught by the apostles. The numbers of people deceived by this error do not make it valid. Everything needs to be tested by the scriptures. Wide is the gate that leads to destruction. Satan comes as an angel of light to deceive even the elect if that were possible. I would ask you to pray about it Ian even though you strongly disagree. God bless you.

were born of the spirit, our spirits are born again. Souls are not born again, they go thru a process of changing. This is where the demonic have influence & sometimes folk need deliverance.

You are arguing agains millions of folk who have been set free of demonic ifluence by the Lord resulting in transformed lives

    • ELIORA profile image

As for being condemning - the Bible tells us to discern and to "judge" - krino in the Greek between different teachings (1 Corinthians 5/11012; 6/5. I have not said anything personal about anyone, that would be wrong judgement. I have criticised the teachings of Ellel as they are unbiblical. Check out your Bible Sam. God bless you.

The enemy comes as an angel of light with lying signs and wonders. Do not believe these counterfeit signs they are coming from Satan Mag. Look at the Word of God - the Bible - it is his word that brings truth but these people mix truth and error. In these last days it is getting more and more difficult to discern the real from the fake. Beware! God bless you.

Rachel - we ARE delivered when we are born again. There is no instance of anyone being delivered after receiving the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. The apostles NEVER practiced deliverance ministry after conversion. You are being conned about this - it is a vicious circle as you never know when you are really free - there is always another demon from which you need to be delivered - this is just a trick of Satan. God's spirit does not dwell with demons - if someone is truly born again then they have been set free completely and utterly.

In the Bible it speaks about God's covenant people being delivered and we are now included as His covenant people, otherwise it is still only meant for Jewish believers under the old covenant...

Because deliverance was for the House of Israel. (His people)

Mat 15: 21-28 Deliverance was described as the 'Children's bread'

(Knowing this is what we need in this fallen world)

I was delivered of a demonic spirit (generationally) and I am free because the work of the cross was appropriated in my life.

According to 1 Peter 1:5, when Christ reigns in a person’s life, that person is kept by God’s power. As a result, “the evil one does not touch him” (1 John 5:18). When the Holy Spirit inhabits a person, no demon can set up house as a squatter. Indwelling by demons is only evidence of a lack of genuine salvation - Judas Iscariot being the ultimate example.

Whilst the comments on Freud and Jung are helpful, it is regrettable that the conclusion that Christians cannot have demons is unscriptural and not found in actual experiential practice. In Acts five verse two we read Peter asking Ananais Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?Jesus indeed cast them out of people who were of the community of faith in the NewTtestament narratives.

"Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues." Revelation 18/4. I have warned my local churches about this sort of thing - but they have either completely ignored me or they are hostile to me. They are wilfully ignorant and spiritually deceived - they are Laodicea. God says he will cause them to believe a powerful deception in the last days because they refuse to believe His eternal Word (2 Thessalonians 2/11). They are in the Lord's hands. I have no more information at present about Ellel but I will add to my article if I come across anything. God bless you.

Ellel ministries was invited to do ministry with our church. Ellel's teaching is wrong but what does one do when the whole premise of their ministry has to do with experience and not right doctrine; when that experience does not line up with theology that person according to Peter of Ellel must go back to their own understanding of theology. How does one deal with the deceived people in your church concerning this issue, including the elders? If you have any more sourced information on Ellel I would very much appreciate that being passed along. If not, thank you for your blog.

How refreshing and written with great clarity. I agree, so many false teachings from the world (satan) have crept into the church. The Apostasy we have been warned of. I came into the fold quite late and give thanks daily for this great blessing, that Jesus died on that cross so that I might enter in, that I have been washed clean and am a new creation in Him. Amen. Thank you Precious Jesus.

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." (Hosea 4/6). Thank you for your input you have a lot of wisdom. Much of the church today will not accept that this kind of 'deliverance ministry' is occult and very dangerous. Ellel Ministries are all over the world. A very good teacher is Jacob Prasch of Moriel Ministries - I recommend him because he goes back to the original languages and is very clear. God bless you.

Wow. This is very well written. Your arguments are easy to follow. I would like to support some of the things you say about Freud and Jung. When I was young, I studied psychology at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania. I quit after I learned in my internship that drug studies are frauds.

Jung once confessed that the bulk of his work was nothing more than translating an eastern book of mysticism into Western terminology so that it might be received. Jung also once wrote an introduction to a book of the I Ching- which is a fortune telling system.

Additionally, the term "psychology" comes not from Latin roots, but from the name of the demon of the mind, "Psyche". You will find Psyche described as a "goddess" (=demon) of the soul (which comprises mind, emotion, and will).

I have never heard of Horrobin, or of Ellel ministries. I have heard of deliverance. I myself was set free from many things after listening for weeks to the teachings of Win Worley. These teachings led me to study the way Jesus and the disciples used their authority, and to compare it to how the modern church prays- with closed eyes.

I have heard the "Jesus Christ set us free" argument to mean that people are completely and totally set free "once and for all". However, when I look at the church of confessed believers, I see bondage, fear, confusion, lies, selfish desires, ambition, adultery, and every type of wrong living.

The only thing that can justify these two statements is this: The first miracle Jesus performed was water into wine- OT grace for NT grace. The second was symbolic- He cleared out the Temple (represents a believer). The LAST thing Jesus did was to again clear out the Temple. I believe- this is my personal observation, not a revelation from the Holy Spirit- that this symbolizes Jesus' return when we will all be cleaned and given new bodies, to be presented spotless before God on Judgment Day.

It is possible for Jesus to clean the Temple, and for the money changers to move back in.

However, NT Grace gives us the power to overcome sin. Life without sin is a much, much better life.

Did Jesus cast demons out of believers? Impossible- there were no Holy Spirit filled believers until AFTER Pentecost.

Until... a lying spirit is of the devil. Annanias and Sapphira were believers, and they lied. Anything more than the simple truth is from the devil. So, how did that happen? Weren't they believers?

The people of God in Jesus' time were the Jews. They believed they would enter Heaven simply because of their claim as descendents of Abraham. Today's Christians believe the same- we said some words, now we are sealed and guaranteed Heaven.

However, Jesus walked into synagogues and cast demons out of Jews right in the synagogue! I have no doubt Jesus could walk into a church today and cast out demons. I have seen many demons cast out of church-going believers.

I don't know anything about "inner healing". It sounds foul, as you have shown. However, being set free by believing God is something available today to the faithful.
