Prayer is a solemn appeal to God or any object of worship. It is simply man talking to God expressing his thoughts to Him as Paul demonstrated his desire and petition that Israel be saved ( Romans 1:10). The prayers of man can be very powerful and limitless far reaching in response when man has the Holy Spirit. Prayers can bring back life from death, life prolonged, a nation saved from death, barren women become mothers, sight returns to the blind and prayers are answered.

Raising of Lazarus
Raising of Lazarus

Prayers helped the dead to be revived through two prophets Elijah and Elisha in the Old Testament. Jesus Himself raised up Jairus' daughter and Lazarus who was dead and buried four days. The power of prayer can be so spectacular that the dead are alive and do what the alive does. What was accomplished according to the will of God, would be successful.

Praise the Lord. Three dead revived in the church, a child from Taiwan, the niece of a preacher who was drowned, but revived the next day. The second incident occured when the niece of a deaconess was electrocuted in the bathroom. The families of three sisters were vacationing in Cameron Highland when the niece was electrocuted. The three families knelt down to pray to God for mercy and God heard their prayers. The three husbands of the three sisters were so impressed by the miracle that three of them were baptized into the Lord. The deaconess is now living in Sydney with her family. The third miracle was recorded in Africa. I could not recall the name nor the place for it happened so long ago. The congregation fasted and prayed throughout the day and night and she was revived. Praise God for the glory and power of prayers.

4 Instances of Raising the Dead

Elijah and Elisha resurrected two children in the Old Testament and Jesus brought back Jairus's daughter and Lazarus back to life after being buried 4 days in the tomb.

Elijah (1 Ki 17:22) Raising up dead child

  • And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

Elisha (2 Ki 4:35) Shunammite's son

  • Then he returned and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

Jesus (Mt. 9:18, 25; Mk. 5:42; Lk. 8:54, 55) Raising of Jairus' daughter

  • My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.

Jesus raised up Lazarus after he was buried 4 days (John 11:17,44).

  • Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes:

King Hezekiah and Isaiah
King Hezekiah and Isaiah

Prayer was prolonged as in the case of Hezekiah. It is a special case to a specific person for Hezekiah had been a good king and did what was right in the eyes of God. King Hezekiah walked before God in truth and with a perfect heart in his reign. When he was sick unto death, God sent Isaiah to tell him to set his house in order for he would die. Hezekiah prayed to God sorrowfully and God healed him and extended his life by fifteen years. Not all prayers for prolonged life are answered, but only in special cases as Hezekiah. God will assess the requests of the appealers.and the merits of the appeals.

Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:6)

  • And I will add unto thy days fifteen years;

In Esther's case, it is not so much as prolonging life as sparing the lives of all the Israelites who were supposed to die by the edict of Hamon and signed by the king. The praying and fasting was Eshter's decision, but she sought all the Jews in Shushan to fast for three days and prayed for God's help and mercy. The prayer was successful and all the Jews in the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus were saved from death. The whole nation of Jews was so thankful their lives were saved by Esther's fasting and prayers that Purim was instituted in honour of Esther saving the whole Jewish nation from being put to death. The Jews celebrated Purim for thousands of years and are still observing Purim today.

Esther (9:31)

To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.
