Tarot: Meaning of The Two of Cups in Love Readings

Updated on March 13, 2012

The Two of Cups literally is the card of Love. Even more than the Lovers card itself. 2 is the symbol of duality, unity and two hearts as one. Two parts of a whole, two cups filled with emotions. In a love reading, the Two of Cups most often is a good sign, indicating many good things to come. Even in reverse it can show that the relationship is strong. Though it can also indicate that things are not as strong as you would like, and might take a turn towards the negative. Pay attention to accompanying cards before fully interpreting the meaning of the Two of Cups in your love reading.

New Love

In many instances, the Two of Cups can indicate a new romantic relationship heading your way. Or it might show that a relationship you've been hoping for, will happen soon. In this moment, the card is indicating a unification in the works, in many positive ways.

To reinforce this interpretation, you might also find these cards in your reading:

  • The 5 of Swords
  • The 9 of Swords
  • The Empress
  • Death Card

More Than Friends

The Two of Cups can sometimes indicate a friendship blossoming into a loving relationship. Whether you've been friends for a long time, or just a little while, if your question concerns the love of a friend, the two of cups is a good sign.

Surrounded

If you're Two of Cups is literally surrounded by the suit of Swords, the metaphor highlights trouble and turmoil at home. This could be with your partner, or other family members, such as your children. Depending on which swords appear, and whether they are reversed or upright, makes a big difference on the vague interpretation.

One thing that is commonly known, is that court cards indicate bigger problems, and the lower down the suit, the lesser the problem really is.

Changes

If the Two of Cups find itself next to the Death card, Hermit card or High Priestess card, this can indicate secrets, big changes or inner issues that need to be worked out. Pay attention to the upright or reversed nature of each of these cards as you pick them, to indicate the full meanings.

This was very interesting because I picked some cards and the two of cups sat right underneath the death and the empress was crowing the reading. It was actually a refreshing spread that signified positive change and hope. Very helpful post thank you so much
