Tarot101: The Fool

Updated on March 14, 2016

Card Number Zero

The Fool card of the Rider Tarot Deck, also known as the Alexandria deck.

As the first card in any tarot deck, The Fool is numbered as zero, signifying infinite new beginnings. The Fool falls under the element of air and the planet Uranus.

When drawing The Fool, the meaning depends on what way the card is flipped; whether the card is upright or reversed/ upside down.

When this card is upright, The Fool is interpreted to mean new beginnings, adventure, innocence, spontaneity, free spirit, potential, faith, freedom, and fearlessness.

When The Fool is flipped and revealed as reversed or upside down, it is interpreted to mean foolishness, recklessness, risk-taking, naivety, stupidity, chaos, and poor judgement.

The Fool is a wondrous card to use to meditate with to control fear in life. The Fool is the curiosity and wonder in the tarot reader.

Drawing The Fool can be simply put as an awakening card that opens an eye towards a fresh start for the reader towards either a free and careless beginning or a risky and poorly decided future that would need to be improved or just needs attention.
