Is the Dress Yours?
Yes, was her reply and she said “it is my body and I will use it however I like. It is my life too and I will live it the way I deem fit. This is why I have decided to pierce three or more holes on each of my ears and put on variety of earrings that are in vogue today. I have also pierced my nose, upper and lower lips and my eyelids to look more attractive. I have also tattooed the word ‘sexy’ on my upper buttocks and I now wear skimpy blouses on low waist trousers and without underwear so that my tattoo is visible to whoever cares to stare. I am now the cynosure of eyes everywhere I go, I am indeed having the fun of my life; this is what I call living!”
Some years back, my response would have been similar to the one above, what about you? One would think that the above response is peculiar to teenagers or young adults but experience would teach otherwise. Your response will be similar to the above if your understanding about your body and its purpose is limited or nonexistent. It will be much so if you feel that you ought to “use what you have to get what you want”.
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:28)
Body piercing is spreading like wild fire all over the world. Multiple earring holes are now common amongst our women folks. The body is sacred; made by God to house man that he made in His own image and likeness. God intends our body to remain sacred, unmarked or torn in anyway. God detests and rejects sacrifices made of lame, torn or sick animals (Mal.1:13). In the same vein, He wants us in the place of worship to present our bodies to Him as a living sacrifice and without any form of mutilation in the likeness of cuttings and drawings (tattoos) on our skin.
In this part of the world, especially because of our idolatrous background, there are very few people without cuttings on their bodies. Those who do not have tribal marks or tattoos have incisions made on their bodies by witch doctors for one charm or the other. Deliverance from demons became a major aspect of our salvation in this part of the world because of these mutilations and their spiritual connotations and implications. Come to think of it, some years back, torn and mutilated shirts are only worn by the mentally challenged or the abjectly poor folks. However, in this generation, proliferation of demonic clothing designs and styles that could only have come from those bereft of the Spirit of God is rampant.
What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (1 Corinthians 6:19)
The body is sacred because it is not just a clothing for the spirit man but a housing for God in His Almightiness, splendor and majestic power in the personality of the executive arm of the God head; the Holy Spirit. God is not claiming our body because he owns it and created it for His pleasure. Even after man willingly became a slave of Satan sequel to the fall, God bought us back (redeemed) with the priceless blood of Jesus (1Cor.6:20a). We must please God in all that we do in or with our body.
The body is not for food. One old trick of Mrs. Jezzy, a powerful weapon the enemy is using against the children of God is food. The reason some people refuse to receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour is because of what they will eat. Some people love beer, alcohol, and cigarette so much that they prefer to ignore Christ in order to continue such sinful and unhealthy habits.
Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body. (1Cor.6:13)
Even for some who have received Christ, the reason they cannot serve God, pray at night and fast is because they worship their stomach. They do everything possible to avoid hunger. Whenever they feel the slightest hunger pang, they grab food. They have forgotten that both the belly and food will perish some day.
Again, the body is not for fornication. In biblical parlance all forms of sexual perversion are many times referred to as fornication. To emphasize how serious this problem is, God made a special case of the set of fallen angels who committed fornication with human beings; He bound them in chains while Satan and all other fallen angels are roaming free until the great white throne judgment (2Pet. 2:4. Rev.20:11-15).
In the words of Pastor E.A. Adeboye, “another old trick of the devil that Jezebel used was sex. Ordinarily, sex is good as long as it is practiced within the context of marriage, and meets with standards of decency. But rather than wait for the right time, many youths have become victims of premarital sex. Apart from this, there is so much abuse of the gift of sex that today men sleep with men, women with women, man or woman with animals, etc. Even between married couples, abuses such as oral sex, anal sex. Masturbation, pornography is rife. If you have become a victim of these, run to Jesus for deliverance today as you are in great danger”.
