Ten Commandments Meanings
Did You Know?
The Weight of The Commandments
- The estimated weight of each stone slate that Moses hauled down the Mount Sinai is 500LBs!!!! Wow, imagine how old Moses was when he was carrying these stone plates. But everything is possible when you are walking with God.
God Speaks To Moses
Back in the days, God was a pretty talkative fellow and spoke many times to his prophets whom he had chosen. God would sometimes speak to them directly, send his angels or through some medium such as a burning bush. So Moses lead the Israelites out of captivity by the Egyptians to the land which was promised to them by God. God planned on giving Moses instructions on how his people should live and conduct themselves which would make them righteous and clean people, worthy of Gods special grace. God called Moses to journey to the top of Mount Sinai where he spent forty 40 days and 40 nights. That must be a whole lot of talking and enlightenment going on on that mountain. God told Moses he would give him a set of rules or commandments in which his people must live by or face the turmoils of their negligence, thus the ten commandments were born.
It is believed that the hand of God himself chiseled the commandments into the rock plates which Moses brought down from mount Sinai.
The Ten Commandements
1. Thou Shall have No Other Gods Before Me
This is simply God telling his people that i am your true maker and only i, the true king is worthy of your worship and praise. The praise to any other God would be false and pagan and thus simply would not go down well with God who loves and adores his children. God's praise and worship is sacred and holy and should only be honored to him.
2. Thou Shall Not Make onto Thee Any Graven Images
So what do you think God means when he says graven image? What is a graven image anyway? A graven image is a carved, molded or drawn idol or representation of a God which is used as an object of worship. Many people believe that graven images are pictures of Jesus, sculptures of Jesus or anything depicting spirituality or Christianity. A graven image can be the new hot wheels you just purchased and constantly worshiping your new car, putting that material object over God and everything else.
3. Thou Shall Not Take The Lord's Name In Vain
So how does someone uses another persons name in vain or use God's name in vain for that matter. God is simply saying that don't use his name "willy nilly" Do not use his name to swear. Do not burst out to his holiness asking Yahweh for materialistic things which you think will make you happy. The Lords name is a powerful word and should be used in reverence for the Lord. The Lords name should be used for needs, acknowledgment and praises, not for comics and jokes and everything else which has no relation to his divinity.
4. Remember The Sabbath Day, To Keep It Holy
One of the most debated commandment. When is the Sabbath Day? Some people say it is on a Saturday, some say Sunday. Well, whenever biblical scholars workout which day is really the Sabbath day, the Lord gave clear instructions: "
The Sabbath Commandment In Details
"Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it."
5. Honor Thy Mother And Father, So Your Days May Be Longer On Earth
This is one of my favorite commandments, its not like i don't honor the rest but this 5th commandment speaks many truth in one simple line. When God says honor your mother and father he is talking about listening and obeying and paying homage to them. Many children's lives we see in today's society whom have had bad influences in life, have either dismissed their parents words of advice, did not have the right parents has role models or just simple followed the hype from peer pressure. The ones that grew up in proper parenting homes, most of the times turns out to be a better person within self. Once you go the road of not listening to and disrespecting your parents, you may end up in a path of total destruction.
6. Thou Shall Not Kill
Did the Lord mean thou shall not kill people? Did he mean you must not kill if you are forced to? Or does he mean that no killing period? This commandment people say is contradictory as in the Bible, the Lord has commanded man to kill and eat and the Lord gave strength to other men to kill, such as the traditional story of David and Goliath. Then they argue that in the Bible it says if a man slaps you in you face, you should turn the other side and allow him to slap it also. Many people have misinterpreted many of these parables and teachings and simply put it to suit themselves. But life is a situation and the Lord gives us teachings to help us in various situations. He teaches us to be strong and defend ourselves, yet be kind and forgiving. In my reasoning, i think that it is quite logical to say that the Lord simple means do not kill in vain.
- Do not kill for revenge
- Do not kill because you are angry
- Do not kill because you are hurt
- Do not kill because of Vanity (money, oil, power)
- Do not kill because of beliefs (Christianity, Muslim, Hindu)
- Do Not kill because of differences (Black, White, Straight, Gay)
7. Thou Shall Not commit Adultery
What is adultery? People think this commandment is one of the biggest sins as adultery is being committed hundreds of thousand of time now as i type this line and you read it. Adultery is when a married person indulges in sexual activities with another person outside of the marriage. Why is this a commandment? Well, the Lord takes marriages pretty serious. When a man and a woman engages in marriage, they come before God and have made a vow. a sacred vow ordained by God himself, bounded by his words, encapsulated by the husband and wife. To commit an act of adultery in marriage is simply to break the vow you made with God and your spouse.
8. Thou Shall Not Steal
Self explanatory if you ask me. Who wants another person taking their property without their consent? I am pretty sure that no one here on earth will approve of that. Taking someone else's property, car, money, computer, a coin, anything that belongs to someone else without them willingly approve of that is stealing. Stealing can lead to a lot of bad things such as death! Every man needs to work to obtain his or her own earthly property.
9. Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor
OK, Do not tell lies! The term bearing false witness simply means lieing. But don't interpret neighbor to be the couple next door or across the street. The term neighbor used here simple means against any man, community or country. A neighborhood can be a city block or span the Caribbean or states (neighboring countries, neighboring villages etc.) Speak the truth and speak it full.
10. Thou Shall Not Covet Thy neighbors things (family, home, car, lifestyle, etc.)
A lot of people think that covet and steal can be used intertwined, well i can tell you you are wrong. Coveting may lead to stealing though, and even many other undesirable adjectives. To covet is to want and desire and lust. So lets look at a simple example, Jill's neighbor has a very handsome husband, Jill fantasizes about having him and simple wish it was so. Jill wishes she had her neighbor Pat's life, her family, home car etc. There is a very Good reason why God commands us not to covet they neighbors things. The feeling of want, lust and desire can lead to some pretty disastrous circumstances.
