Do you believe the Fundamentalists in America are suppressing freedoms?
They're on to us!
Oh boy. Michael Moore did it this time! His recent article on the Huffington Post got my blood boiling. Or really, made me very very sad. Yes folks, it's the "abortion thing" again. You know-- the LEGAL procedure that is suddenly unavailable to women, in ever increasing and scary numbers. Yes folks, in the "Land of the Free".
I can't take credit for the title of this Hub, by the way. That was a reference used by Howard Stern many years ago. Stern, another American whose freedoms were treated lightly and spuriously by the Christian Right; who rigidly control a large part of our government. Yes folks, in this country of "Separation of Church and State"! Do you see where I am going with this? Just wait. You won't believe it.
Here is what our illustrious freedom-loving officials are doing with OUR rights and the laws of OUR land:
"Bart Stupak is threatening to derail it (the healthcare bill) because he wants to make sure that no woman who buys her own insurance with her own money is able to have a medically-insured abortion. We're not talkin' about federally-funded abortions -- those were stupidly outlawed long ago. Bart Stupak doesn't like that the Democrats' bill doesn't prohibit private insurance programs, set up for those whose employers don't provide it, from providing abortion coverage if they get any federal funding -- even to an individual woman paying without any government help. That's it."--Michael Moore
Her OWN insurance with her OWN money! Now mind you--these are the SAME people who will defend Israel's right to blow up little babies in Gaza, or shower innocent civilians with white phosphorous, or carpet-bomb a country, or send targeted attacks from a computer in Virginia. The self-same people don't want a woman to stop a pregnancy from happening; so a human being is spared being born into a world of poverty, fear and suffering. Because, as you know, it is also these same officials who never want to spend a single tax dollar on the poor! That is THEIR money and don't you forget it.
Excuse me if I don't take seriously your claim of following Jesus. Excuse me if I think you are just as repressive as the Taliban. You just couch it in other terms don't you? You couch it in standing up for the rights of the Zygote. Unbelievable. And wrong.
Whenever this issue comes up, it always reminds me of a book I read years ago. It's called The Handmaid's Tale, and is written by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. When I first read this book, I felt "this is happening here!" In my own country. See if you don't agree:
"Beginning with a staged terrorist attack killing the President and ousting Congress blamed on Muslim terrorists, a movement calling itself the "Sons of Jacob" launched a revolution under the pretext of restoring order, suspending the US Constitution. Given electronic banking they were quickly able to freeze the assets of all women and other undesirables in the country, stripping their rights away. The new theocratic military dictatorship, styled "The Republic of Gilead", moved quickly to consolidate its power and reorganize society along a new militarized, hierarchical, compulsorily-Christian regime of Old Testament-inspired social and religious orthodoxy among its newly-created social classes."
Eeri, huh? And scary too! It is quite possible that this IS happening in our country 2010. There has undeniably been a tremendous erosion of female reproductive rights in the past 20 years...rights that were fought so hard for! Women went to jail, starved themselves, lost their families to secure this right. Where I live, there is no accesss to abortion whatsoever. Providers have been scared off, or run out of town by the nasty Viperish Operation Rescue thugs.
You can also visit a "church" with a carnival atmosphere, go inside and see a real aborted fetus. Sorry they don't also make available pictures of the little babies in Iraq born to mothers who have been subjected to depleted uranium....that is heartbreaking to see.
Make no mistake about it, this current political climate is a war zone. It's a war for our freedoms and ability to afford a decent life against the forces of religion and money. If you can't feel it, it's because you are not on the targetted end of this so-called Democracy. The view from here is very scary indeed. And harsh. It's no Liberty and Justice for women, it's back to the stone ages.
