The Edge of Immortality

Updated on November 29, 2015

The Edge of Immortality

Is everything temporary, including people's lives? Many believe that human beings never actually die. But we know that our physical bodies do age and eventually die. Do we have spirits or souls that live on after death? We can only theorize about it, but many point to paranormal activity as proof that spiritual forms of life do exist. Some believe that this activity is caused by the spirits of those who died. Others believe it is caused by demonic spirits.

Whatever you believe about immortality depends on your belief about God. This often presents a dilemma because those who don't believe in God cannot prove He doesn't exist; and those who do believe in God cannot prove He does exist. However, if you don't believe in God, then you would most likely have a hard time explaining the immortality of human beings. For example, if we are immortal, then what caused our existence? If God does not exist, then how could humans exist?

We live on the edge of immortality. If we are born with immortal spirits or souls, where do they come from? When your body dies, where does its spirit or soul go? People don't want to die; therefore, many imagine that each of us has an immortal spirit that leaves the body when it dies. They don't know where this spirit comes from, but they imagine different places it might go to after it leaves the body.

Many believe that spirits of the dead cause strange phenomenon. However, this has not been proven by scientific investigation. This strange phenomenon is actually caused by demons trying to deceive people; they want people to believe it is caused by spirits of the dead. They want people to believe that humans are immortal.

Some believe that the living can communicate with the spirits of the dead. For example, communicating through a medium at a seance. This has often been proven to be a hoax to get money from someone who wants to communicate with a loved one who has passed away.

Many believe that after death a person's immortal soul enters a new living body. This is the theory of reincarnation held especially by members of Hinduism. Reincarnation, however, does not explain where the immortal souls of the first human beings came from? Neither does it explain why the birth rate of the world is much higher than the death rate.

Many believe that after death a person's soul goes to Heaven or Hell. They believe that the souls of good people go to Heaven where they live for eternity; and that the souls of the wicked go to Hell where they burn for eternity. The truth about the soul's immortality in Heaven or Hell can be found in the Bible. This belief is held by members of Christianity; however, Christians and others often misinterpret what is written in the Bible.

Those who believe in God know that He intended for human beings to live eternally. The first two humans God created were given a choice about eating forbidden fruit or not. God told them that eating the fruit would lead to death, but they ate it anyway. In the Bible these first two people were called Adam and Eve.

When Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they committed the first sin. As a result, they lost their immortality, and became imperfect. Since then, all humans have inherited their sinful nature. Sin is what keeps human beings on the edge of immortality and causes our death. If God does not forgive our sins, then we cannot become immortal.

When we die, do our spirits or souls die? Our spirits do not die; the spirit is the breath of life from God that gives us life. When we die, we stop breathing. The breath of life leaves the body, and returns to God. Our souls die; the soul is just another name for a person, especially the thoughts and emotional part of a person. When a person dies, he or she stops having thoughts and feelings. When we die, our lives are temporarily expired. Time stops for the dead, but continues for the living.

If we are mortal because of sin, then we must conclude that our souls do not cause paranormal activity after we die; and that our souls are not reincarnated into new bodies. In addition, we must conclude that our souls do not leave our bodies and go to Heaven or Hell.

The body is part of the soul; therefore, after death, the soul does not go anywhere until the body is resurrected. That explains why people don't go to Heaven or Hell right after they die, and it explains why a person's soul does not burn in Hell for eternity.

True Christians who have died will be resurrected when Jesus Christ returns; then they will become immortal and go to Heaven. Others will not be resurrected until much later; they must be judged on Judgment Day. After being found guilty, they will not become immortal and must be destroyed in the Lake of Fire.

The truth is that true Christians who believe in Jesus as their savior will be forgiven for their sins and have immortality; but those who do not believe in Jesus as their savior will not have immortality.

Why do people reject God, the One who could make them immortal? For some reason, many want to believe that humans are immortal, and don't need God. Many even deny the existence of God, and others have a warped idea of who He is. Look at the evil world today that is on the verge of destruction. Do you really think the world can save itself? Instead of trying desperately to eliminate God, we should have enough faith in Him to save us from destruction.

If sin keeps us on the edge of immortality, then how can we become immortal? If we know that we exist because God created us, then we can find out how to become immortal. The truth is that only God can make you immortal; He will only make you immortal after He forgives you for your sins.

God loves us and He doesn't want us to die. But how can we have a perfect world if people are imperfect because they sin? God sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. If you believe in Jesus as your savior, only then can you become immortal.

In Summary, many believe that we don't actually die, and that we have spirits or souls that are immortal. Some believe that paranormal activity is caused by spirits of the dead, and others believe it is caused by demons. Whatever you believe usually depends on what you believe about God. If we are immortal, then what caused our existence? If God does not exist, then how could we exist?

If we have immortal souls or spirits, where did they come from, and where do they go after we die? Many imagine that we do have invisible spirits that are immortal, and leave our bodies when we die. They don't know where these spirits come from, but they imagine different places they would go to.

Many even believe it is possible to communicate with the spirits of the dead. Others believe in reincarnation, which says that after death a person's soul enters a new body. Many believe that our souls go to Heaven or Hell right after we die.

The truth is that God intended for us to live eternally. But the first two humans sinned. They became imperfect and all humans have inherited their sinful nature. Sin keeps us on the edge of immortality and causes our death. Do our spirits or souls die? The spirit is the breath of life from God that we have while we are alive. After death, the spirit returns to God. The soul is just another name for a person, especially a person's thoughts and feelings. When we die, our souls die.

We are mortal because of sin, therefore, our souls do not cause paranormal activity after we die. This activity is caused by demons who try to deceive people to believe it is caused by spirits of the dead. We are not reincarnated, and do not go to Heaven or Hell right away. Your body is part of your soul and does not go anywhere until you are resurrected. Therefore, your soul does not go to Heaven right away or burn in Hell for eternity.

Christians who die will be resurrected when Jesus returns. They will become immortal and go to Heaven. Others will be resurrected much later to be judged on Judgment Day. When they are found guilty of their sins, they will be destroyed in the Lake of Fire. Only those who believe in Jesus as their savior will be forgiven for their sins and become immortal.

Many believe that humans are immortal and don't need God. Many deny the existence of God. Look at the world today on the verge of destruction. Instead of trying desperately to eliminate God, we should have faith in Him to save us from destruction. If you know that you exist because God created you, then you can find out how to become immortal. You would then know that God will make you immortal if He forgives you for your sins. He loves you and does not want you to die.

The world cannot be perfect because of sin. God sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins. If you believe in Jesus as your savior, only then can you become immortal.

From the Bible:

Now this I say to you, brothers in Christ, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does corruption inherit incorruptible. Behold, I show you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed.

For the corruptible must put on incorruptibility, and the mortal must put on immortality. So that when the corruptible has put on incorruptibility, and the mortal has put on immortality, then the saying that is written will come true; "Death has been swallowed in victory."

(1 Corinthians, Chapter 15, Verses 50 through 54)
