Life is a journey along Time's river,

Pressing onward, brief, event-filled, ever

My choice: to battle against the tide

Or go with the flow on my ride,

But God is there when I cry my need.

In youth, rapids, rocks and waterfalls,

Cliffs oppress in serried ranks,

Change lurks at every bend, danger appals;

Enticements beckon from the banks,

But God is there when I cry my need.

In mid-life the scene changes still,

Whirlpools threaten, floods from the hill,

Followed by arid stretches of dry river bed:

I must shoulder my craft and struggle ahead,

But God is there when I cry my need.

The journey continues, as traveller and river

Still adapt to change, and choose to alter

To reach maturity, flowing deep and calm;

Tranquility undergirded by deep-eyed wisdom,

And God is there when I cry my need.

Until, blest by bread and wine, behold, the sea!

The final change, where Christs's Gift for me

Enables my welcome to the Everlasting Shore,

Transmuted to Life and peace for evermore,

Because God is there.

      Rosemay50: Thank you. Sometimes I think it would be nice if it was all smooth sailing, but then I guess we wouldn't learn much about the journey we're on.

      Without the rough rapids we would not appreciate the calm waters so much and yes we learn as we sail along... :-)

      Lovely! I love the way you used the pictures to transition through the poem's stages. It reminds me of the peaceful assurance of Psalms 23. He is always there for us.
