The Good God of the New Testament vs the Bad God of the Old Testament

Updated on March 21, 2017

Marcion Of Sinope

The Bad God vs The Good God

The Good God and The Bad God

Marcion of Sinope (ca. 110-160 C.E.) A man you've probably never heard of, because his views, about the Christian idea of God, were so controversial, such a threat to, orthodox Christianity, he was pretty much written out of the "official" history of Christianity.

Marcion is credited with writing the first or original New Testament, devoid of any connection to the, Jewish or Hebrew, Old Testament.

Putting it simply, his said there was a good God and a bad God. That the God of the Old Testament was the bad/evil God, and that the God of the New Testament, was the good God, and Jesus was his son. He laid this all out, in a book he published called, "The Antithesis". I bet you've probably never heard of it have you?

The following, is just a sample of the differences or antithesis, pointed out by Marcion, between the Bad God of the Old Testament and The Good God of the New Testament.

The Bad God

The Bad God/The Old Testament God

And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Gen 2:9

The Good God/The New Testament God

For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Luke 6:43
Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. Matthew 12:33

Bad God

The Bad God/The Old Testament God

Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Exodus 21:24

The Good God/New Testament God

And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. luke 6:29

The Bad God/Old Testament God

And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty, If I be a man of God, then let fire come down from heaven, and consume thee and thy fifty. And there came down fire from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty. Kings 1:10

The Good God/New Testament God

And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

The Bad God/Old Testament God

23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 2 Kings 2:23-24

The Good God/New Testament God

And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

The Bad God/Old Testament God

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. Isaiah 45:7

The Good God/NewTestament God

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5

Be An Open Minded Seeker of Truth

If you have an open mind, and are really a seeker of the truth; You can go through the Bible and check this for yourselves, and probably find even more "antitheses", between,The Good God of The New Testament and The Bad God of the Old Testament.

As Jesus said,Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:32

They are one and the same god. He isn't just a nice omnibelevolent caretaker, nor is he a malevolent dictator. There are times for healing, and times for destruction. Plus the Messiah did quote the Old Testament numerous times so we cannot say they are two different gods.

      V. I'm glad that you put us on to this comparison. I have long believed that the god of the Old Testament was just a Hebrew tribal god, and the god of the New Testament was the one of whom Jesus was purported to be the "only begotten son of". I do believe that Jesus spoke metaphorically when he referred to "my father", and that all of us who follow those teachings can call god "our father" or "my father". However, I don't believe in the concept of an external source of creation or power, but that we are all part of the creator that humans refer to as "god", and that we can all spread god's light.

Hi Eric! I'm not sure if Marcion's book is on amazon. Do a youtube search on Marcion, and you see various researchers, professors, presenting on the history of Marcion.

Very interesting. I gather that book is not on Amazon ;-)

If people do not investigate and analyze this concept then they are blind.
