Are Acts of Kindness the Gospel?

Updated on May 5, 2017

There are many stories proclaiming that the result of the thousands of dollars of donations has resulted in the 'Gospel' being reached to unbelievers. Preachers boast in front of their congregations about everyone’s good deeds. They say the act of giving money is a gesture of kindness towards others and is commended as loving your neighbour, and even your enemies. These behaviours are considered part of the Gospel without even using words.

Acts of kindness are promoted and taught as it prompts people to ask why.

Should we not love our neighbours as ourselves and meet the needs of the poor and needy whenever we can?

Acts of kindness go a long way in helping feed the poor, sheltering the homeless and contributing to disaster relief programs. Money, donations and man-power are the bread and butter of heart-warming stories and personal experiences of many who have been helped by great acts of kindness.

The Problem

There is a problem in the modern church system where acts of kindness are being equated with the Gospel. Many believe that being a friend to someone and being kind to the lost is proclaiming the Gospel. The Christian, Mormon, Buddhist, Atheist, Muslim, etc. can all do these same kind deeds too with the same results. They all can be nice people who contribute funds toward many great causes making a huge difference by contributing their time and resources to the temporal needs of society.

The 'Gospel' that is preached in church system is no no different from what the unsaved are already doing and preaching also.

Many do things in Christ's name, including acts of kindness, but they are simply good temporal self-righteous works that really have nothing to the true message of the Gospel. Unfortunately, many do not understand that the true Gospel has nothing to do with what they are doing, but rather has to do with what Christ has done. They become workers of iniquity because they attempt to take the place of Christ and use their works of kindness as an add-on to the Gospel.

Anything good that we think we are doing does not equate the power of God for salvation, only Christ has that authority. The Gospel is not about the warm and fuzzy stories of great acts of kindness that we have done, but is the spoken and written message of the redeeming gift of salvation from God’s impending wrath that only comes through the blood of Christ through repentance.

Counterfeit believers in the modern church system are a result of sincere people performing acts of kindness towards others, but fail in proclaiming the true Gospel. The results are buildings filled with alleged followers of Christ who have simply become members of a kind and friendly church group rather than being transformed by the redeeming work of the Holy Spirit. Acts of kindness can make us all feel warm, fuzzy and content, but really have no resemblance to repentance.

Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. – Romans 1:32

Acts of Kindness

Our acts of kindness will not save us, or anybody else. It is only by accepting the act of what Christ did on the cross for all of mankind that we can find the key to entering the Kingdom of God.

No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. – John 6:44

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead – 1 Peter 1:3

Any act of kindness that does not come with the Gospel message is not the authentic Gospel, nor is it evangelism. All the service, mercy, charity, and church activities that does not have a presentation of the true Gospel is not the Gospel, period.

The fact is that all the feeding, clothing, housing, teaching, caring, compassion, volunteering, employing, social justice initiatives, etc. to the lost as an act of kindness is not the Gospel because any unsaved person can do these same things too.

The true Gospel is not about us or about what we do, but is about Christ and what he has done.

The supposed 'Gospel' that is preached in the modern church system is another gospel promoted by workers of iniquity who do things in the name of Christ, but deny him by neglecting the true Gospel with their additions and subtraction that give more precedence to the traditions of man.

The Good News is the Gospel. We cannot do the Gospel because it has already been done by Christ. If we try to do the Gospel, then we are making ourselves the Saviour instead of Christ. Acts of kindness become the 'Saviour' instead of Christ.

Many people go out and help society so that their love and good works shine in front of others, but the genuine Gospel is really about confronting a sinful world about the destiny without Christ.

For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! - 1 Corinthians 9:16

We are to be witnesses of Yahweh's redeeming work by what Christ has done, not extensions of it. We cannot do the Gospel, it already has been done. That is why the Gospel will always point to Christ and not to ourselves.

Do acts of kindness teach people that they are living in sin?

The true Gospel is a light that shines into the darkness of our sinful nature through the conviction of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel is about dealing with sin.

The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” – Mark 1:15

Before there can be fruit of repentance, there must be an enlightening of one’s own sinful ways as standing guilty before God leading to a change of mind and action by aligning with the ways of God in obedience to the commands of Christ. The 'gospel' in the modern church system does not preach acknowledgement of our wickedness and need of repentance. They just say that all you have to do is simply 'believe.'

News Flash!!! Satan and demons believe too.

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” – John 3:20-21

This may be a hard pill to swallow for many, but we cannot add or subtract from the redeeming work of Christ no matter how many acts of kindness we do in our lifetime.

The kind deeds that so many people believe are part of the Gospel are not. One big distinction is the difference of focus. One focuses on the temporal and the other eternal. The true Gospel will fulfill the eternal needs of man. Even if all the temporal needs were met in the world, without Christ we would all perish.

Do you believe the Gospel is?

Although you have deleted your Hubpages account and your comment, I hope you would have a clearer understanding of the true Gospel. The problem most people have is that all their traditions have taken precedence over what the Gospel message truly is.

Think of a white building that we will call the pure Gospel. It is pure white because it has no additions or additives put on it. What happens is that someone comes along and paints, or adds a different color on the building. It does not cover the whole building, but because it is a bold color it stands out. The bold color stands out so much that the attention is put on that color that the pure white becomes a backdrop to that color. As time goes on, others come along a spray their own graffiti and symbolism upon the building too. Now, what was once a pure white building, is now cluttered collage of images and symbols that have nothing to do with the pure Gospel. The pure whiteness gets lost behind all the man-made clutter. The unfortunate thing is that the name of the building is still called the "gospel" when it has no resemblance to the true Gospel whatsoever. In fact, it is another "gospel" that has been created in the image of carnal man and no longer represents what Jesus Christ has done. It is the defiled "gospel" that is an abomination, but is promoted as the true Gospel in the modern "church." It is an agenda of man, rather than by the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Graceinus, has driven home the point that the Gospel is misunderstood by 99% of Christians because what has been presented to them is not the pure Gospel, but another "gospel" that suits them. It focuses on the temporal things of this world rather than our eternal needs, which can only can be fulfilled the the blood of Jesus Christ.

The modern "church" promotes social justice initiatives as the "gospel," but it is a clever deception of Satan. I would point you to this article here,

It explains in more detail how far of course many have gone.

gabrielsings- I believe what PandN is saying (which I fully agree) this that churches as you know them exist based on the ways of the world. Whereas the true church exist based on the grace and spirit of Jesus Christ. And most christians don't understand the difference. Gospel is a misunderstood word by 99% of christians. It means Good News. It is the Good New that Jesus Christ brought into the world. It is the knowledge of new hope through Jesus Christ that the coming Kingdom are for those who seek for it. The gospel reveals to us the way to have a direct relationship with our Father in heaven because of what Jesus Christ did for us. The gospel reveals that no matter how dirty our sins may have been the blood of Jesus Christ has wiped them clean. The Gospel is the revelation of God grace through faith that He has given us. And there are other examples. These are the Good News.

The Gospel is not acts of kindness. The Gospel is not work of charity. The Gospel is not pearching that God is an angry God. The Gospel is not paying your tithing or you'll go to hell. The Gospel is not the Old Covenant. The Gospel is not the fall of man. The Gospel is not the antichrist. The Gospel is not Abarham and is wife Sara. The Gospel is not how to be successful in today's world. The Gospel is not becoming a membber of a denominational church. The Gospel is not Noah flood. The Gospel is not going to church on Sunday or any other day of the week. The Gospel is not satan's influence on mankind. The Gospel is not how much money you have or don't have. The Gospel is not loving your wife, children or parents. And the list goes on and on. These are not the Good News that Jesus brought to mankind. But these are the things that 99% of man made christian churches teach as being IN THE Gospel. And this is the problem.

      Caleb DRC,

      Nice to see you around.

These big "Christian" charity organizations pull the heartstrings of many for their cause to bring in funds, but it is THEIR cause. That is the difference. The true Gospel is about HIS cause and our purpose is to align with that.

For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. - Romans 10:3

Cain tried to do things his own way by his own self-righteousness. Look where it got him. There will be many people who will face Jesus Christ and will be angry because all of their sacrifices that they had made were in vain. This is the perverted "Gospel" that is promoted in the modern "church." It looks pleasing and acceptable, but is the way to damnation.

Any self-righteous efforts to attain salvation is NOT the Gospel. That means that any charity, kindness, good-works, generosity, ministry, etc... that has no presentation of the Gospel is NOT the true Gospel, even if it shows starving kids in Africa and Cambodia.

Biblical love is a Gospel that preaches against sin, not the "love" that includes compromise and tolerance. The "love" that is preached from the pulpit in the modern "church" is an accomplice to sin.

The one who rejects me and does not receive my words has a judge; the word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. - John 12:48

People in the modern "church" do not want to hear that their good works are NOT acceptable to God and are filthy rags. They would become enraged.

They fail to understand that the true Gospel EXCLUDES church membership, baptism, dedications, charity, kindness, generosity, rituals, rites, ordinations because it has NOTHING to do with what we do.

If the Gospel message includes these things, it is the "gospel" of Cain.

And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness - Romans 4:5

      Thanks for adding your thoughts.

You certainly are consistent on hitting the nail on the head.

We give 300 billion dollars to charitable causes, which is 1.6 times more given to the fast food industry with its 300,000 restaurants and 3.9 million employees. I have often wondered what percentage of those who distribute American's charitable giving are using that opportunity to give the recipients the true Gospel at the same time they receive the benefits.

"The Christian, Mormon, Buddhist, Atheist, Muslim, etc… can do all these same kind deeds too with the same results." - so simple and so true, but it seems to go right over people's heads. Thank you for staying true to the Scriptures.
