Are Acts of Kindness the Gospel?
There are many stories proclaiming that the result of the thousands of dollars of donations has resulted in the 'Gospel' being reached to unbelievers. Preachers boast in front of their congregations about everyone’s good deeds. They say the act of giving money is a gesture of kindness towards others and is commended as loving your neighbour, and even your enemies. These behaviours are considered part of the Gospel without even using words.
Should we not love our neighbours as ourselves and meet the needs of the poor and needy whenever we can?
Acts of kindness go a long way in helping feed the poor, sheltering the homeless and contributing to disaster relief programs. Money, donations and man-power are the bread and butter of heart-warming stories and personal experiences of many who have been helped by great acts of kindness.
There is a problem in the modern church system where acts of kindness are being equated with the Gospel. Many believe that being a friend to someone and being kind to the lost is proclaiming the Gospel. The Christian, Mormon, Buddhist, Atheist, Muslim, et,. can all do these same kind deeds too with the same results. They all can be nice people who contribute funds toward many great causes making a huge difference by contributing their time and resources to the temporal needs of society.
The 'Gospel' that is preached in church system is no no different from what the unsaved are already doing and preaching also.
Many do things in Christ's name, including acts of kindness, but they are simply good temporal self-righteous works that really have nothing to the true message of the Gospel. Unfortunately, many do not understand that the genuine Gospel has nothing to do with what they are doing, but rather has to do with what Christ has done. They become workers of iniquity because they attempt to take the place of Christ and use their works of kindness as an add-on to the Gospel.
Anything good that we think we are doing does not equate the power of God for salvation because only Christ has that authority. The Gospel is not about the warm and fuzzy stories of great acts of kindness that we have done, but is the spoken and written message of the redeeming gift of salvation from God’s impending wrath that only comes through the blood of Christ through repentance.
Many sincere people are performing acts of kindness towards others, but fail in proclaiming the true Gospel. The results are buildings filled with alleged followers of Christ who have simply become members of a kind and friendly religious group rather than being transformed by the redeeming work of the Holy Spirit. Acts of kindness can make us all feel warm, fuzzy and content, but really have no resemblance to repentance.
Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. – Romans 1:32
Acts of Kindness
Our acts of kindness will not save us, or anybody else. It is only by accepting the act of what Christ has done where we can find the key to entering the Kingdom of God.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. – John 6:44
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead – 1 Peter 1:3
Any act of kindness that does not come with the Gospel message is not the genuine Gospel, nor is it evangelism. All the service, mercy, charity, and church activities that does not have a presentation of the true Gospel is not the Gospel, period.
The fact is that all the feeding, clothing, housing, teaching, caring, compassion, volunteering, employing, social justice initiatives, etc, to the lost as an act of kindness is not the Gospel because any unsaved person can do these same things too.
The genuine Gospel is not about us, or about what we do, but is about proclaiming Christ and what he has done. The supposed Gospel that is preached in the modern church system is another gospel that claims to do things in the name of Christ, but in reality points to a group of people who are trying to make a name for themselves.
The Gospel has already been done through Christ. If we try to do the Gospel, then acts of kindness become the Good News and the people that do them become the saviours instead of Christ.
Many people go out and help society so that their love and good works shine for all to see, but the genuine Gospel is confronting a sinful world about the destiny of their souls without Christ.
For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! - 1 Corinthians 9:16
We are to be witnesses of God's redeeming work by what Christ has done, not extensions of it. We cannot do the Gospel, it already has been done. That is why the Gospel will always point to Christ and not to ourselves.
Do acts of kindness teach people that they are living in sin?
The true Gospel is a light that shines into the darkness of our sinful ways through the conviction of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel is about dealing with sin and being set free from them.
The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” – Mark 1:15
Before there can be fruit of repentance, there must be an enlightening of one’s own sinful ways as standing guilty before God leading to a change of mind and action by aligning with the ways of God in obedience to the commands of Christ. The supposed Gospel in the modern church system does not preach acknowledgement of our wickedness and need of repentance. They just say that all you have to do is simply 'believe.'
News Flash! Satan and demons believe too.
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” – John 3:20-21
We cannot add to the redeeming work of Christ no matter how many kind acts we do in our lifetime.
The many big Christian charitable organizations pull the heartstrings of many for a cause to bring in the monetary, but it is their own cause. That is the difference. The genuine Gospel is solely about the cause of Christ and our purpose is to align with it.
For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and SEEKING TO ESTABLISH THEIR OWN, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. - Romans 10:3
Cain tried to do things his own way in his own self-righteousness. Look where it got him. There will be many people who will one day face Christ and will be very disappointed to hear that all of the things that they had done in his name were in vain. What may look pleasing and good does not necessitate that it is the genuine Gospel. We must be careful not to preach another Gospel.
On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons IN YOUR NAME, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ - Matthew 7:22-23
Self-righteous efforts are the common cause of the supposed Gospel that is proclaimed in the modern church system today. Instead of glorifying what Christ has done, they point to what they are doing as a means of attracting more members in the names of their denominations. This is not the Gospel. Any charity, kindness, good-works, generosity, ministry, etc, that has no presentation of the genuine Gospel is a ‘different gospel.’
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a DIFFERENT GOSPEL— – Galatians 1:6
The acts of kindness that so many people believe are part of the Gospel are not. One big distinction is the difference of focus. One focuses on the temporal and the other eternal. The true Gospel will fulfill the eternal needs of man. We must consider that if all the temporal needs were met in the world, without Christ we would all still perish.
Do you believe the Gospel is?
- Socialism in the Modern Church
There is a buzzword circulating in the modern churches and government called “social justice,” do they really understand the roots of this “noble” goal, and what ultimately manifests?
- The Call to Repentance and Obedience
It is the urgent time to truly give God glory by worshiping Him with Biblical truth. This means putting away the false worship that man is promoting in the modern “church.”
- The Opinions of Man versus the Word of God
When man tries to put himself at the same level as God it is contempt towards Him. The question remains, which has infallible authority? Is it opinionated man, or the divine Word of God?
