The Growing Intolerance of the Tolerant

Updated on September 13, 2014

Bob Hunter worked for Ontario Hydro for 22 years. He later became a researcher/writer for the Christian Research Institute in California.

Tolerance in Today's World

The Southern Poverty Law Center says about itself: "Our Teaching Tolerance program is working to foster school environments that are inclusive and nurturing – classrooms where equality and justice are not just taught, but lived. The program points to the future, helping teachers prepare a new generation to live in a diverse world."

Unfortunately, tolerance is being taken to extremes.

We're seeing examples of this in states like California, where Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill which would allow "transgender" children to choose which bathroom they want to use and whether or not to play boy's sports or girl's sports.

The same applies to acceptance of gay marriage - under the misused banner of equal rights - and the right of women to 'choose" whether or not to kill their bab...I mean, have an abortion!

However, when it comes to acceptance of anyone who disagrees with the new tolerance, intolerance is the norm of the day, and it is rising very quickly to dangerous levels.

What follows are several examples of this dangerous practice of intolerance.

Willie Robertson
Willie Robertson

Duck Dynasty

Late last year A&E suspended Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson for remarks he made to GQ Magazine about homosexuality being a sin.

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

This is the view of every Bible-believing Christian simply because the Scriptures make this quite plain. Keep in mind this passage from Corinthians doesn't just say practicing homosexuals will be kept out of the kingdom - so will practicing drunkards, slanderers, adulterers, etc. However, mentioning homosexuals was enough to raise A&E's ire enough for them to immediately suspend Robertson.

A few days later, Cracker Barrel removed some Duck Dynasty products from their store/restaurant chain. Outraged fans immediately protested and Cracker Barrel reversed its decision.

On December 27th, 2013 A&E reversed its decision to suspend Robertson.

Christian Lawyers Forbidden to Practice Law

On April 24, 2013 the Ontario Law Society of Upper Canada voted against accrediting British Columbia's Trinity Western University's law school because its students must sign a covenant that forbids sexual intimacy "that violates the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman" or face punishment or expulsion, or be refused admission. This also means no homosexual relations.

The next day Nova Scotia's law society made the same decision if the university refuses to reverse its policy banning same-sex relations.

The consequence of this is that lawyers who graduate from TWU's law school cannot practice law in Ontario or Nova Scotia.

Meanwhile, in British Columbia, although TWU has been accredited, pressure is on for the law society there to reverse that accreditation.

Meanwhile, Back at HGTV

The Home and Garden network was to start airing a show called Flip It Forward, staring Christian twin brothers David and Jason Benham.

Extremist group Right Wing Watch decided to do some digging and discovered that the Benham brothers don't believe in divorce, abortion or Gay marriage. The next day, May 14, 2014, HGTV canceled the show based on those views.

Mind you, many Christians watch HGTV despite the well-known fact that there are many homosexuals who have shows on the network. They watch anyways because the stars know their stuff - whether it be fashion, gardening or building. They don't discriminate just because Gays are on HGTV's shows. But HGTV's intolerance of Christians shone brightly when they canceled Flip It Forward simply because the brothers hold to Christian views!

SunTrust Bank and the Benham Brothers

Within two days of the show's cancellation SunTrust Bank decided to end its relationship with real estate entrepreneurs, David and Jason Benham. There was an immediate backlash from the bank's conservative customers, who threatened to pull their money from the banking chain. The same day SunTrust made the announcement it reversed its decision. Although the bank denied dropping the brothers because of their views, citing other reasons, the sudden reversal casts suspicion on their motives.

Where To From Here?

So where are we headed if this growing intolerance is allowed to flourish? The very ones who charge Christians with being intolerant are now the intolerant, the bigots, the bullies.

What will happen if instances such as what is taking place in Canada and on television in the United States are allowed to grow?

Will Christians be prevented from becoming doctors if they take a stand against abortion and homosexuality?

Will they be prevented from becoming police officers lest they be tempted to mistreat Gays?

Will Christians be prevented from running for office? In San Antonio, TX last year a proposal was made that would disqualify anyone running for public office who has demonstrated a bias against a person based on race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. That includes people who have spoken out about topics like gay marriage.

Will conservative Christians be prevented from having any say on the public airwaves - airwaves that are largely liberal already?

It's time the continent wake up or we will find ourselves very quickly under a dictatorship.

The challenge is that Christians are no longer allowed to have a voice in this new tolerant world. Also, many same sex couples fail to realize that marriage is scriptural, not temporal. Marriage is God's intention, not man's invention. The first marriage occurred in Genesis when it was proclaimed that man shall leave his mother and father and cleave to his wife and the two shall become one flesh. This all occurred prior to the gay rights movement in America. Without the Bible marriage would not exist and same sex marriage would be a moot point. If same sex couples are bent on unions then that is what they should have--Civil Unions. There is nothing scripturally that supports same sex couples unless they read the Queen James Bible.

Just in case you did not know the homosexual community actually has a bible called the QJB (Queen James Bible) and they alter the scriptures to fit their world view. Check it out.
