The Truth About the Holy Ghost

Sometimes writers distance themselves from religious subjects when writing. Religion is still taboo to speak about. Read about it instead.

Firstly, yes. There is a third member of the Godhead. I hesitate to call Godhead the trinity because of all the convoluted ideas related to that twisted doctrine contrived by the several councils of 4th-century Christian apologists.

The Godhead is the council of three, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Ghost. God, the Father, is the head of the council of three and He determines the direction of all the universe. God the Son is the executor of the council in that He executes all of His Father’s words. The Son, Jesus Christ is the Word of God’s Power.

The third member of the council, the Holy Ghost is a testator. He testifies of the first two members of the Godhead without bringing any direct attention to Himself. The Holy Ghost is also a revelator, a comforter, an enlightener, a verifier, a sanctifier, and a sealer of God’s promises.

He has the ability to do all of these things because God the Father and God, Jesus Christ have charged Him to reveal and verify all the words of Christ from the time of Adam until the last man (woman) is born to the world.

“The Holy Ghost… is a Spirit, in the form of a man. … The Holy Ghost is a personage of Spirit, and has a spirit body only. His mission is to bear witness of the Father and the Son and of all truth.

“As a Spirit personage the Holy Ghost has size and dimensions. He does not fill the immensity of space, and cannot be everywhere present in person at the same time. He is also called the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of Truth, and the Comforter” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 1:38).

J. F. Smith, a modern prophet of God, verifies who and what the Holy Ghost is! He is a person! He is a righteous man similar to Jesus Christ in that He attained Godhood as a spirit. He is a son of God the Father just as all people are sons or daughters of God the Father.

NO, I don't have a picture of the Holy Ghost. I only have the sign by which he is known, a dove.

In answer to those who question:

Yes; He has a gender and He is also a brother to all of humanity, which is why He testifies of the veracity of God’s plan of happiness established through Jesus Christ.

Why is it important to know of the Holy Ghost’s fraternity to man and His appearance? It is important because God, the Godhead is knowable and approachable--all three of Them. God the Father and Jesus Christ both have bodies of flesh and bone, but the Holy Ghost is a spirit.

Joseph Smith, another important modern prophet testifies that he saw God the Father and the Son in a vision--all this while being changed or quickened by the Holy Spirit to endure Their glorious presence. In that vision and other revelations, Joseph saw and verifies that Jesus and Heavenly Father have physical, tangible bodies, while the Holy Ghost has a body of spirit intangible to flesh.

Nothing to my meager knowledge has been revealed about the “origin or destiny” of the Holy Ghost other than that which is common to all the spirit sons and daughters of God. Any knowledge about His life other than that found in the scriptures and what is revealed in modern revelation is apocryphal at best.

To Nephi, a prophet from The Book of Mormon, the Holy Spirit (another one of His names) appeared to Nephi and spoke with Him as one person would to another. He appeared to Nephi as a man though Nephi knew to whom he spake was the Holy Ghost. In answer to Nephi’s prayer, he spoke to and saw the Holy Ghost as suggested by 1 Nephi 1:11-12.

God With US

The Holy Ghost, as a member of that council of three, puts every person who feels His influence in the very presence of God. Because the Holy Spirit is an individual, He cannot be in multiple places at the same time; but, His influence, just like the sun, can be felt by every person willing to do God’s will.

The rays of the sun shine on every person who is out in its wake. Any person who allows love, peace, joy, and such to flourish in their lives can feel a measure of the Holy Spirit’s power regardless of religion or belief in God. His power can be felt strongly to the point where it consumes the flesh or as faint as a whisper heard only with intentional listening.

Again, the prophet Nephi explained to his brothers at one point that “I am full of the Spirit of God, insomuch that my frame has no strength… (1 Nephi 17:47)” attesting to the power that the Holy Spirit lends to worthy people. Any person can feel of His power, but there is a privileged few who are blessed to have His constant companionship!

Only those who have received the ordinance of baptism by immersion through the proper priesthood authority and hands laid upon their heads to receive the Holy Ghost, also by priesthood authority, have the right to the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost.

And of this group of lucky ones, only those who live the commandments of Jesus Christ, which includes repentance does the Holy Ghost actually manifest Himself constantly. Of billions of people, only millions have spiritual rights to the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The Gift of The Holy Ghost

“The gift of the Holy Ghost is the privilege—given to people who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, been baptized, and been confirmed as members of the Church—to receive continual guidance and inspiration from the Holy Ghost.” (Gospel Principles ch. 21)

Simply put, everyone can feel the power of the Holy Ghost, but unless they are baptised and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, they have no rights to His constant influence as do baptised members

Only members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have access to this gift and only within the church is there authority to baptise and give the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Importance of the Gift

Jesus Christ instructed His disciples in His mortal ministry alluding to His death, resurrection and ascension that He would leave them with a Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost.

This Comforter’s job was to instruct them in the Gospel message and to help them recall everything that Jesus had spoken to them John 14:26.

For some reason that is beyond me, the Holy Ghost did not fully operate in the same manner when the Savior was present; yet, when He left, the Holy Ghost did manifest Himself as recorded in Acts 2!

As the disciple sat in meet, there arose a great rushing sound that went throughout the house and apparently filled the area where many devout followers of Judaism were gather of many nations. Each person heard marvelous things spoken to them in their own languages by those in meet and from the voice in heaven.

Confused by this phenom, the people disputed until Peter, realizing that what happened was of God and a manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the gift of tongues, explained to all in his voice range who would listen about the prophecy of Joel regarding the seat of king David and who should fill it, Jesus Christ..

After he finished, all those devout Jews of many nations felt the Holy Spirit prick their hearts and sought after Peter what they should do now that they believed his words. (It is my assumption that the word “prick” means “touched their heart to believe”.)

In the most dramatic way in my mind Peter told them:

Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38)

Those Jews accepted Jesus as the promised Messiah and were baptised that very day because the Spirit of God testified to them that what Peter taught them was true! They obeyed the Holy Ghost.

Had they not acted upon their new knowledge, the Holy Ghost’s influence would have left them as they were before He revealed the truth to them.

Truth Revealed

The Holy Ghost testifies of all truth as Moroni records in his portion of The Book of Mormon when he wrote, speaking of God that “...he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”

Knowing the truth without question about God and Jesus Christ is what the influence of the Holy Ghost does for each worthy willing person.

Without His influence, no one would have a testimony of Jesus Christ who did not actually lay eyes on Him. Billions of people have had a witness that Jesus Christ is the Savior of humanity through the power of the Holy Ghost. These same people can have the supporting Comforter promised to all of His disciples by baptism and laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost by priesthood authority.

He verifies messages from God, such as whether the things written in the Bible or other scriptures are truthful. He sanctifies all those who have received His presence after baptism by purifying their souls to be ready for presentation by Jesus Christ to the Father. He purges all the sin and evil from every repentant person and continuously cleanses throughout life any time a saint overcomes a sin through the atonement of Christ--until that person is perfected in Christ and returns to Heaven Father.
