The Word Discovers Our Condition

Updated on December 19, 2010

Enter That Rest

"Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account" Hebrews 4:11-13

Do Not Fall Into a Trap

We are reminded not to fall into a trap, that rejecting God’s promises are easier than we think they are. The rest that is being talked about is an eternal rest, one that is a reference to Heaven. In order to know God’s rest you have to know Jesus Christ not to just say it but to truly feel it and know within your heart. Some may think that they are right with God but if it is not in your heart it needs to be. Only God knows what is in your heart and how you truly feel. People fall short of God all the time, but knowing Christ you are able to repent for your sins because Christ died for our sins so that we could live through Him. God’s word searches deep within our hearts, failure to listen, believe and act on what is revealed will result in judgment not from others but from God. “as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” 2 Peter 1:3-11

Sharper than Any Two Edged Sword

The word of God is in all actuality the communication of God to human beings; me, you and everyone.  The word of God is living and active…well stop and think about this, the word produces results in those who receives God’s word.  Don’t you agree?  Using a sword as a metaphor in this statement compares the effectiveness of His word, sharper than any two edged sword, it is the most effective cutting tool known to Him and is throughout the Bible. “He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength” Revelation 1:16, “Now out of His mouth goes a sharpsword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God” Revelation 19:15, “And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh” Revelation 19:21, and “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” Ephesians 6:17.

As long as we as believers grow in the faith and bear the fruit of righteousness we can have assurance that our salvation is genuine.  The Lord has granted us everything that we need to grow in godliness.  We must make every effort to supplement our faith.  God’s word cannot be taken lightly and God does not tolerate neglect or indifference to His word.  The Bible was not just written by men in the past that couldn’t relate to us here and now, it was written by God himself.  The Holy Spirit dwells within us and within the writers, He moved on the writers and they wrote what they were told to write.  The Holy Spirit is alive and well today within believers and that is why the word is called the Living Word.  It is very effective to accomplish what God wants us to do.  “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it” Isaiah 55:10  Every time the word of God is spoken, read, heard, or sung it is accomplishing its purpose.

Don't Turn Your Back

To deny the word of God is to turn your back on the only person that can save us.  Those who say that by doing good works will get them to God is giving up all the possibilities for doing this because they are denying the very thing that has the power to change them.  The word of God cuts us open and exposes the reality to our hearts.  “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” 1 Corinthians 1:18.  For the lost, the word of God is confusing and frustrating to read because they do not know Christ, but for those that know Christ the veil is lifted and the words make more sense than anything you have ever read.  We are all unable to hide anything from God because he knows everything about us.  We can hide in a closet and pretend that he cannot see us but he knows what we are doing and where we are at all times.

“O LORD, You have searched me and known me.  You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.  You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is high, I cannot attain it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fallon me,” Even the night shall be light about me;
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.  My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.  And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.  How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You. Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God! Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men. For they speak against You wickedly; Your enemies take Your name in vain. Do I not hate them, O LORD, who hate You? And do I not loathe those who rise up against You? I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies.  Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting” Psalms 139

Are you going to enter the rest that God has prepared for you?  Live the word, He is waiting for you.
