The Cleansing Blood of Jesus

Updated on May 26, 2011

A hub was written by my fellow Huber revmjm on Psalms 91, and it was beautifully written, but I want to dive more into Psalms 91 and tell you more about how we get to abide under the shadow of the Almighty. We only can abide under the shadow of the Almighty through the blood of Jesus, the Holy Lamb of God who died on Calvary cross for the atonement of our sins.

When this psalm was written by David, the blood of Jesus was not yet shed, they were still living under the Levitical Law where the high priest was the only one that could go into the holy of the holies behind the veil and offer the blood of goats and bulls, as sacrifice for our atonement of sins, this was done once a year.

Why the blood?

The blood is where the power is; everything starts and ends with the blood of Jesus because where the blood is there is life.  The absence of the blood is sin, and sin is death (Romans 6:23) “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God (Jesus) is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Let’s look at the blood in the natural; without the blood you cannot survive, it is an essential part of your body’s system that maintains life. The blood performs several tasks in your body; it acts as a transporting agent of the body to the cells by bringing in food (nutriments) to feed the body through Oxygen, and it carries away all waste (impurities) from the cells through Carbon Dioxide, this process is needed in order to maintain healthy white and red blood cells which in turn keeps your body healthy.

The blood is a defense for our bodies; it fights against infectious diseases and all other foreign materials that serve to wear our bodies’ immune system down, making us sick and prone to various diseases, which can eventually kill us if not treated in time.

The blood heals, and restores the body, when you become sick it’s that same blood that has to fight off your body infection and diseases, your blood has a clotting factor call platelets (cells that help you stop bleeding) that help to coagulate your blood so you do not bleed to death when you get cut or injured.        The blood is also responsible for maintaining a constant temperature in your body, so your blood has to be healthy pure and cleans in order to maintain a well balanced circulatory system.

Let’s look at the blood of Jesus; the blood operates basically in the same way but on a spiritual level, and way more powerful than the natural blood. The blood of Jesus is activated when you call on the name of Jesus for forgiveness of your sins, the blood comes into your body and circulates bringing in all that’s needed to maintain your new life with Christ Jesus while filtering out your sins, the impurities that made you spiritually sick and kept you at arms length with God the father.

The blood of Jesus has supernatural powers;

1. The blood has cleansing power, when we are forgiven by God (means we have been accepted, made whole, and brought into righteousness unto God through the blood of Jesus). As the blood circulates through our body and cleansed all sins we become like a newborn baby being born, but this time around we are born of the spirit and we now take on God’s DNA because we are no longer dealing with the flesh as the dominant force.

2. The blood of Jesus is not only life for now but it’s also is the promise of eternal life with God when He comes back for his people, isn’t that awesome. The word of God state in (John 10:10) that “He came that we might have life and that we might have it more abundantly” and in (John 3:16) God gave His only begotten son that whosoever believe on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

3. The blood of Jesus is very powerful; it brings nourishment to our body. How are you nourished? We are nourished just by having Christ in our life, (John 6:35) states “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” We are nourished through God and His words (John 1:1) “in the beginning was the word (Jesus), and the word (Jesus) was with God, and the word (Jesus) was God” (John 14:9) “I and the father is one, he that have seen me hath seen the father”, and verse 11 “I am in the father and the father is in me.” The reading of His holy word is your food supply to your body and mind; it’s what strengthens you from day to day.

4. The blood of Jesus brings Deliverance; the blood has the ultimate power over every evil and demonic spirit that will come your way from the enemy Satan. Jesus defeated Satan at the Cross because try as Satan may, he could not stop Jesus from accomplishing His purpose, which was to bring down Satan and his host kingdom, and He did that by laying down His life for us. (1st John 3:8) “For this purpose the son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

Through deliverance we have the victory, Satan try to defeat Jesus in the wilderness but he failed because Jesus rebuked him, (Matt. 4:10) He said “get thee behind me Satan” in verse 7 it says “for it is written thou shall not tempt the Lord thy God”, (James 4:7) “Resist the devil, and he shall flee from you.” No matter what Satan try to bring against you it will fail if you trust in God, exercise your Faith, speak the word of God, and plead the blood of Jesus.

The blood of Jesus frustrates the devil because he cannot win if you hold fast to God (1Corth. 10:13) “there is no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with temptation also make a way of escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” There is always a way out but it has to be God’s way, Remember (Isaiah 54: 17) states “No weapon formed against you shall prosper” the weapons might form but it will not touch you because of the blood, Satan cannot cross or penetrate the blood of Jesus.

5. The blood is protection from the enemy; the blood is divine protection as seen in the old testaments when Moses was instructed by God to put the blood of a blemish free animal over the door post of His people, the Israelites in order to protect them from the death angels as it passed over them and killed all the Egyptian’s first born.

5. The blood of Jesus empowers us & gives us confidence to move in the authority of Jesus name, to approach the throne of God boldly in prayer, to not be afraid and to know that God is our helper (Hebrews 13:6) “so that we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.” The blood of Jesus also give us confidence to ask whatever we have need of and with assurance know that He will give us the desire of our heart.

6. The blood of Jesus brings Healing; sickness and diseases is from sin (Satan) not from God, (Deut. 7:15) “the Lord will take away from you all your sickness, and will not put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee.” (Exodus 23: 26) “I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.” The Lord is known as Jehovah- Rapha, the Healer “I am the Lord that healeth thee”. (Isaiah 53:5) says “He (Jesus) was wounded for our transgression, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we were healed.”

The blood of Jesus is power for our daily living;

Satan is our enemy so rest assured that he is terrified of the blood because he knows the power and he understand the effect of the blood, we need to know the blood for ourselves and use it because it’s effective, and that how we will become overcomers. I like this quote by Carl Roos, “Make much of the Blood; and the Blood will make much of you.”

This is a very popular old time hymn about the Blood of Jesus, and I love to sing it because it does something in me every time I sing it, Hallelujah!!!

Would you be free from the burden of sin?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you over evil a victory win?
There's wonderful power in the blood.

There is power, power, wonder working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be free from your passion and pride?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Come for a cleansing to Calvary's tide;
There's wonderful power in the blood.

There is power, power, wonder working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be whiter, much whiter than snow?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Sin stains are lost in its life giving flow.
There's wonderful power in the blood.

There is power, power, wonder working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you do service for Jesus your King?
There's power in the blood, power in the blood;
Would you live daily His praises to sing?
There's wonderful power in the blood.

There is power, power, wonder working power
In the blood of the Lamb;
There is power, power, wonder working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

The Blood of Jesus

God’s Covenant

The blood of Jesus represents His covenant with His people, what’s a covenant you might ask? This is an agreement between God and His people in which He makes specific promises and demands. It’s a formal sealed agreement or contract. This agreement binds people together to perform certain responsibilities.

The blood of Jesus is our personal guarantee from God if we trust Him, turn from our wicked ways and confess our sins we will be saved and have eternal life which is our inheritance. (Ephesians 1:13-14) “We were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” God always keep His promises, His words are sure, (Deut. 7:9) “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generation.”

 In the natural a covenant is a legal written, binding agreement between two parties, a contract that gives you entitlement of specific things if you fulfill what is required of you. Looking back we see God’s covenant with several people such as: Moses - The Mosaic Covenant, where God promise Moses and the Israelites that they would be His special possession among all people if they obeyed Him and keep His Commandments.

Noah –Covenant, where Godpromise Noahthat he would never again destroy the earth by flood (Gen 9:11-17), the rainbow signified His covenant.

 Abraham - Covenant, God promise to make Abraham a great nation and to bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him. (Gen 12:2-3) Through Abraham all his descendants - all people on earth would be blessed.

David, God’s covenant with King David was that his descendants would be established as the royal heirs to the throne of Israel (2 Samuel 7:12-13). Jesus was a descendant of David’s blood line, Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promise to David (Acts 2:29-36).

Jacob – God appeared unto Jacob in a dream and made a covenant with Jacob to give him and his descendants the land on which he was lying, and to make his descendents numerous (Genesis 28:12-15) as the dust of the earth, and that He would keep him and will not leave him.

The new covenant begins in the New Testaments, when Christ died for us, He ushered in the covenant of the promise where we are saved, and justified by His grace and mercy. Jesus Blood represents an oath, pledge, or covenant that God made to us, and this is seen in the Passover meal, He broke bread (his body) and drink of the cup (His blood) (Matt. 26:28) “For this is my blood of the new testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins. (Luke 22:20) Jesus blood symbolizes the new covenant, and it accomplish what the old one could not; the old covenant (Animal blood) was temporary but the new covenant (Jesus Blood) is permanent thereby making the old covenant obsolete.

Jesus in the Flesh

Jesus the son of God who was also the word of God became flesh, He came to earth through a mortal woman but not any ordinary woman. The woman to whom I am referring to is Mary Magdaline, she was a virgin, woman of faith, she believed in God, and lived her faith thereby finding favor in God, She was chosen to be the mother of our Savoir the Messiah. Her conception was a supernatural one, I am not going into that, it’s either you believe the word of God or you don’t, it’s that simple.

Jesus had a specific purpose in coming to earth and His purpose was destine to be completed in 33 years, and He fulfilled His destiny when He died on the cross. Jesus main purpose or Job was to destroy the enemy Satan and his works in order to bring redemption and salvation to His people, and give them a promise and a hope of the future of eternal life, this could only happen through the blood of Jesus that was spilled on Calvary Cross for our sins.

Just to reiterate Jesus life was not taken from Him He freely laid it down, in the word it tells us that no man has the power to take my life, I chose to laid it down and accomplish the will of my father who sent me. Jesus paid the price by giving the ultimate sacrifice, His self in John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life”. “For God sent not his son into this world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Psalms 91 is a psalm of protection and deliverance from the enemy, the name of the Almighty God is “EL-Shaddi” and you can’t dwell in the secret place of the Most High, and abide under His shadow without the blood; it’s the blood that gives you free and unlimited access to the secret place. This secret place is God Himself we are hidden in Him and Satan can’t touch us, we have an assurance that we will be protected and delivered from any type of destruction.

 God is our protector and deliverer, we are safe in him, he tells us in Psalms 91 that we should not be afraid for the terror by night, nor the arrow that flieth by day, nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at our side and ten thousand at our right hand but it shall not come night to us, no evil will befall us and no plaque shall come near our dwelling.

David had this assurance and he trusted God with every fiber of his being, he knew what God said he would always do, so David life was about  worshipping the Almighty King, he loved to praise Him in songs and dance, David was a man after God’s own heart, and God deliver and protect him at all times.

If we can reach that level of trust in God and take cover in Him and be assured that no harm will come to us then we would live like royalty that we are meant to be. We need absolute faith to totally trust God on this level as David did, because it’s very difficult to stare destruction in the face and not panic. When you hear people and government all around you panicking and sprouting fear, doom, and gloom it is discouraging and disheartening, it is only the grace of God that will help you to stand strong and not panic yourself.

Nothing can harm you, the blood gives you the power to stare destruction, death, and Satan in the eye and tell it to flee and it has to go. The blood of Jesus gives us absolute power to overcome every storm and clouds that rage against you but it won’t work unless you open your mouth and plead the blood over your situation. “The power of life and death is in your tongue” You are more than a match for Satan and his host of demons, through the blood of Jesus that lives within us because Satan knows how powerful the blood is, and he knows he can’t cross that line. (Luke 10:19) ‘Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”

Use Your Spiritual Weapons

We know about the blood by reading the word of God, we sing about the blood, and now we need to plead the blood, to activate its power over all our situations and circumstances that are attacking us. The blood is one the powerful weapons that God gave to us to use against the enemy and we should use it at all time both defensively and offensively.

Plead the blood over you, your family, cars, house, finance, health, jobs, business, any situation that is causing you grief and difficulties or potential grief and difficulties. You do not have to fold your arms and let the devil run you ragged nor let disease, lack, poverty, depression, fear, insecurity, and oppression, takes over your lives, because the blood is available to break every curse and loose every blessings.

 (Rev 12:11) And they overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb (Jesus), and by the word of their testimony. When you declare the blood you are releasing the power and the anointing to go forth to fight for you, relieving you of all anxiety, fear, struggles, sickness and death. When the power of God is activated immediately peace will enter your body because some one else is fighting the battle for you and you are confident of the outcome which will be victorious. (2Corth. 4:8-9 & 16) “We are troubled on every side, yet not distress; we are perplexed, but not despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroy.” “Though our outward man perishes, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”

 Appropriating the blood of Jesus to everything evil or demonic that comes up against you, confessing your faith, and expecting that you will get the result you are looking for will open the doors and bring you into a breakthrough of healing, deliverance, protection, prosperity, success, wealth, victory, and increase spiritual maturity in Christ our Lord. (2 Chron. 16:9) “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of them whose heart is perfect towards Him.”

      Like Bill I too plead the blood of Jesus over my life and family. The blood is the very basis for our personal relationship with God. I would hate to think where I would be without it. Be blessed and great post.

      powerful! the blood of Jesus crys out more than righteous Able's blood did. Innocent blood was truly shed in unrighteousness. It punched a hole in death itself. The grave could not hold Him, therfore it can not hold us or keep us under a curse.

      Bless you sis

      Thanks for letting us know that the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sins. We do not look back when we are forgiven. We just keep close to the Lord and keep looking up. The life force is in the blood. He actually shed His blood for us - what greater love than that can anyone have. Despite our sinful state, despite the fact that we crucified him - he still loves us! "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do". GOD IS GREAT!!

      I came upon your post from a Google Alert I set up on the phrase "plead the blood". I do this every day for my family and believe God showed me something about this which I wrote about in my blog in 2006. You might be interested in reading it at: Be blessed!
