The meaning to our lives

Updated on March 17, 2012

For years I thought I had to find the meaning of my life. I thought I had to find a purpose for my life. You spend a life time being taught that you have to find meaning for your life. And then you spend another life time trying to find that meaning and never coming to the conclusion. Can you honestly say you’ve found the meaning to your life? I did this for years, read books, listened to great speakers which I feel was good for me. You are where you need to be to get to where you’re going. Hope that makes sense. I did this journey about finding meaning, about finding purpose and then one day it dawned on me. Everything I’ve been searching for has been in me all along. The meaning of my life dwells within me. The purpose of my life is within me. All the answers that I’m looking for already exist within me.

When we start looking for meaning in life we will spend a lifetime looking. When we stop to realise that life just is and that everything we need is within us then we’ll stop and start seeing and understanding. I realised when I stopped searching I found, when I stopped trying to grasp things outside myself I began to understand.

Your Meaning to your life

Everyday you open your eyes and see another sunrise is meaning to your life. Each breath you take in, the sound of your heartbeat is meaning to your life. The smile on your child’s face, the wet lick of the dog, a good laugh with your friends, a time with your family. That’s the meaning of life. It’s about feeling good, appreciating everyday, making peace with where you are in life. That’s the meaning of your life. It’s about being in the now, in the moment, it’s about letting go and allowing. Trying to find meaning in your life outside yourself only fills you with worry. You’re either in the past or the future and both places make you miss out on right now.

Stop labelling yourself

Don’t allow anyone to label you and don’t label yourself. You are an endless creation of God. You can’t be identified with a label. There is no label good enough to describe who you are. You are unique and indescribable why be limited to a label? When you grow from the inside out you will begin to discover that nothing and no one can give you a label. You can’t be described in words. You are a magnificent human being created in Gods image. God is a creator and he created you in his image that makes you amazing. How can you even begin to imagine putting a label on that. For too long I strove to be someone I was not. I labelled myself a writer, I had to be that but that is not the core of who I am. I’ve also allowed other people label me but I’ve come to realise that I can’t be boxed and labelled, no one can. The amazing thing you will discover when you stop trying to find the meaning to your life is that you’ll stop labelling others. You will see the light that they are, regardless. You won’t concern yourself with what they are doing, you will only see them as God sees them.

Don't be to hard on yourself

I only got to this place after a lot of searching. You must accept where you are in this journey of your life. Do what feels right with you, accept how you feel and you will quickly move on to where you need to be. There have been times when I’ve struggled with my life. Your life has a high, then a dip, then a high then a dip. But it then comes to a time when you steadily go on an upward scale without the sudden highs and dips. I’d like to think of the sudden highs as a highlight of your life to come, as your life as it should be on a permanent basis. But you have to take the steps to get there. So when you feel the dip don’t worry too much about it, when you focus on the inside; your life will start to make a steady rise instead. That’s how my life feels now; it’s on a steady rise up.

May you be blessed and may all your days be filled with goodness and may you enjoy the sunshine on your face, the laughter of your loved ones and the taste of beautiful food. When you experience these all day and everyday, you’ve found the meaning to your life. :-)

Very profound hub. I too spent years thinking I needed to know my purpose and realised it's inside. Love is not outside of us, but in. I also totally agree that labelling yourself (or others) is not helpful.

I came to your hub because your name appeared on my profile as "Others you might like," and I am very glad it did. I do still have dips, and although they are nowhere near as deep as they used to be, I have a feeling it will be good to read your words next time I have one. Generally what I find is that when I have a dip it is followed by some deep understanding that brings me an new level of peace.

Looking forward to reading more of your hubs!

      Voted up and UABI.

Thanks for your comment Melovy, I understand what you mean about the dips and a deeper understanding afterwards. It gets better and you get up faster :-)
