Book of Revelation 101: The Seventh Seal
The Seven Seals
In the book of Revelation, God is holding a scroll sealed with 7 seals, that only the Lamb (Jesus) is able to take from him and open. The earth has a temporal existence of 7,000 years since the fall of Adam. The Millennial reign of Christ is to occur after his Second Coming, being the last 1,000 or so years. Seven seals, each representing 1,000 years of time of the World's History. The First seal is 4000-3000 BC, the Second 3000-2000, and so on so forth
Silence in Heaven
As described in the summary of this Hub, as soon as Christ opens the seventh seal, there is a silence in heaven for the space of half an hour.
"What is meant by the half hour of silence has not yet been revealed. If it is to be reckoned on the basis of 'the Lord's time' of 1000 years to a day, the duration would be some 21 of our years. (Abra. 3:4; 2 Pet. 3:8.)" - Bruce R. McConkie
(When you do the math, it's actually a little less than 21 years)
If the mortal fall of Adam happened about 4,000 BC, the 6,000 years ended at the year 2000. Remember the big end of the world scare? Ok, granted that one was based off of a real-world issue, but a lot of the hysteria caused some over-the-top behaviors.
Christ didn't come in the year 2000, nor did he in 2001, or 5, or 7...
Ya, 2012 didn't happen as it was depicted either. The years keep climbing and still no sign of Jesus. The Earth still turns, the days still pass...So, is it to say God has forgotten us?
"For behold, angels are declaring it unto many at this time in our land; and this is for the purpose of preparing the hearts of the children of men to receive his word at the time of his coming in his glory." - Alma 13:24
This scripture was given sometime before Christ's first coming, but the same principles apply preceding his second coming. He is sending forth his armies to gather the wheat from the tares in the vineyard before he pours out his wrath upon the earth. "Behold, I will hasten my work in its time." - D&C 88:73
But we can't forget, that an opposition must exist in all things. When the Lord hastens his work, the Devil also hastens his...
Back to the 8th Chapter
After the silence, John sees 7 angels holding trumpets, and another Angel before the alter of God, holding a censure and incense. The incense is the prayers of the saints here on the Earth, those still righteous people who are following God's commandments and holding fast to faith in an increasingly wicked world. They are praying with full might of heart for relief and an end to the wickedness!
"And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound." - Revelations 8:5-6
"All Hecky-Darn Breaks Loose"
(In the words of my Revelation's Institute Teacher)
The angels with the trumpets begin to sound, one by one.
The First Angel: "and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up."
The Second Angel: "and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed."
This is not literal blood, as Moses turned the Nile into, but rather imagine poison, storms, hurricanes...what could cause a third part of the ships to be destroyed? Naval armies perhaps even...
The Third Angel: "and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter."
"A GREAT star" that fell from Heaven...Stars are symbolic to spirits or souls. A GREAT star that fell from heaven with the name Wormwood. What is wormwood? A very bitter root used in medication, but it is also defined as "A state or source of bitterness or grief.". In this particular instance, the "star", or soul that fell, or was cast out, of Heaven is Lucifer. The Destroying Angel, or even Death in this case, upon the waters.
The Fourth Angel: "and the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise."
What kind of power could cause so much destruction? A third of the entire earth, and its population destroyed! Two words: Nuclear War. Bruce R. McConkie notes the following:
"We do not say that all of the Saints will be spared and saved from the coming day of desolation. But we do say there is no promise of safety and no promise of security except for those who love the Lord and who are seeking to do all that he commands.
It may be, for instance, that nothing except the power of faith and the authority of the priesthood can save individuals and congregations from the atomic holocausts that surely shall be.
And so we raise the warning voice and say: Take heed; prepare; watch and be ready. There is no security in any course except the course of obedience and conformity and righteousness."
The end is nearing, what kind of war do you think break out?
Just the Beginning
This may be about the ends of chapter 8, but not the end of the 7th seal, oh no. If you were to put the verses of the book of revelation in order of the time periods they talk about, there are over 200 verses that describe these last days and the events that happen within the 7000 years.
