What Happened to Truth?

What is Truth?

This question has been pondered, studied, debated, and investigated throughout the history of mankind. Science seeks to hypothesize, test, and box it. Philosophy seeks to expound, enlighten, and enhance it. Medicine seeks to hospitalize, treat and drug it. Government seeks to label, control, and tax it. Hollywood seeks to fabricate, twist and romanticize it. And culture seeks to personalize, modify and distort it.

Yet, through all of these attempted institutional modifications, truth still remains simply as truth, regardless of how elusive to the majority of people it is today. And no matter how clever we are in trying to change truth or how fast we try to run away from truth, every one of us will at some point in our lives come to a place where we must come face to face with the truth...and for most this is a most terrifying place to be.

It is one of the hardest and most humbling events in a person's life when we reach a point of standing face to face with the truth. The truth about ourselves and the truth about the world around us. In John 18, we find the account of Pilate standing before Jesus, the One who earlier proclaimed Himself to be the Truth, asking one of the most important questions anyone can ask, "What is truth?" And its from this simple account that I want to highlight three realities that will help you and I discover what is truth and what is happening to truth today.

The Precision of Truth

Real truth is precise, it has an exactness and exclusivity to it. So often today, the media, governing authorities and religious figures attempt to design truth in a way that makes it all-inclusive and thus more palatable when it is found to be even the slightest bit offensive. These entities have created a colorful prism that distorts and re-imagines truth after the designs of their own deceitful, evil hearts, and through coercion, trickery, flattery, or bullying demand that everyone use this prism to view the truth of reality. And just as the Jews that brought Jesus before Pilate to be judged colored and distorted the truth of who He was and what He said, authorities today continue the same twisted tradition as those from the past.

Daily we are force fed a diet of "real" vs. "fake" news. We are told that the sex of our birth is not a reality of truth but a feeling that can be changed on a whim as often as a brisk Autumn breeze changes direction. Regularly we are forced to accept immoral lifestyles as normal and natural truth, while complying to laws that facilitate and encourage open rebellion against God's moral laws. We are educated and indoctrinated to believe that truth is expansive and subjective. That truth has many faces, and depending on the individual, many realities, so that my truth may not be your truth, after all, what is truth anyway?

All of these things are open, rebellious attacks against God and the preciseness of truth as revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. Truth is defined by Merriam-Webster as "the body of real things, events, and facts." Jesus defined Himself as the truth. He alone is the body of real things, events, and facts, and apart from Him there is no truth. Truth is precise, exact, and exclusive. And it is the precision of truth that terrifies so many today because of its end result.

The Proof of Truth

Truth can be proven, and in fact was proven over 2,000 years ago by Jesus. When Pilate asked Jesus if He was a king, Jesus gave him, and us, the purpose of His coming. He aptly responded by proclaiming, "for this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." In essence, all truth has been proven and attested to by the person and work of Jesus. The foundation of all truth stems from His virgin birth, His sinless life, the countless miracles He performed, His teachings, His sacrificial, redemptive death on the cross, burial and His resurrection 3 days later. And all of this foundational truth has been preserved through His holy Word, the Bible, which has been delivered and passed down from generation to generation.

Each aspect of the truth, from His virgin birth to His resurrection continues to be the focus of attack from a hostile and rebellious world bent on rejecting God and truth. Over the centuries, countless attacks have been levied against God and His truth. Not only is the person and work of Jesus attacked, questioned, distorted and prostituted, but the Bible, Christians, and every good thing from God has a target placed squarely upon it.

Perhaps the most interesting proof regarding the truth is not primarily proof generated from truth itself, but proof spawned by the relentless attacks of those that reject and rebel against it. Only something that is real and true can be a danger to the false and untrue. Those whose life mission it is to constantly attack the truth of God through subterfuge, deceit, and vice only serve to solidify and elevate the truth they so desperately long to suppress.

The Product of Truth

Finally, we see that knowing, believing, and following the truth makes those who do become truth themselves. Jesus said in v.37 that those who hear His voice become the product of truth. In other words, anyone who responds to the gospel call in penitent faith is now a part of the truth. What a marvelous description of the union between Jesus and the believer!

Through careful study of supporting scriptures, it becomes evident that other results or products of truth become reality as the follower not only knows truth, but is in fact set free by it (John 8). We then become blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ (Eph.1), seated with Him in the heavenly places (Eph.2), and partakers of His divine power that has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness (2Peter 1).

So, what is truth? Simply put, truth is Jesus. Realization of this fact provides perspective as to why this world system, through media, movies, tv, government, and false religions, constantly work in a concerted effort to undermine and attack truth at every turn.

Ours is a spiritual battle to be sure, as the devil with his fallen angels work through the lost and condemned people of this world in a futile attempt to thwart and limit the truth of God from spreading and setting the captives free. We who are of the truth must continue to fight the good fight, pulling as many souls as we can out of the fire before the truth, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords returns to set up His kingdom of truth and righteousness on the earth, and judges both the living and the dead.
