Understanding Psychic Skills

Updated on August 8, 2014
Source

If you are thinking about using the talents of a professional psychic, it can be helpful to understand the various skills and abilities involved before you start.

You can get more out of your reading when you know what kinds of messages to expect, and you can choose the right psychic for your situation.

When you use a psychic service (such as Psychic Elements) you can usually read through the information of potential readers, and it should let you know what their gifts are. Then you can make an informed choice based on the type of reading you're hoping to get.

An Empath

Empaths can pick up on your emotions, and read your true feelings (even if you are not aware of these feelings yourself). These are excellent readers to talk to when you are trying to make decisions and can't really sort out how you feel about the situation. People who are empaths are also very good listeners that can feel how the reading is effecting you as you go along.

A Clairvoyant

Clairvoyance is the ability to "see" things, often at a distance and also through various points of time. So a clairvoyant may be able to shed light on something going on in another city, but also may see things from the past or future. These are very versatile skills that can give you all kinds of insight into a variety of situations, though not all clairvoyants are going to have exactly the same abilities.

On this note, a similar talent is clairaudience where a psychic can hear things rather than see them.

A Medium

Also sometimes called channelling, mediumship means the ability to communicate with spirits. If you are trying to get a message from a deceased loved one, this is the kind of ability you should look for, though these types of readers are also very skilled at getting in touch with spirit guides on your behalf as well.

The specific method of spirit communication can vary from medium to medium. Sometimes the reader simply hears a spirit speak and they relay the message on to you, or automatic writing might be used. Automatic writing is when a psychic writes messages that originate from a spirit, but they are not aware of what they are writing until they read it. It's quite a unique gift.

A Few More Tips

When you are visiting a psychic (either in person or on the phone), don't expect them to read you perfectly right from the start. You will have to offer up some details and answer their questions in order to let them tuned into you.

Also, don't be immediately turned off if your reader makes a mistake. Nobody is perfect, no matter how skilled they are. Provide more information and work with them to improve your connection, and then the accuracy should improve too. You may even need more than one session to start seeing a really direct connection between you where they can see or hear what you need. A little patience is always a good idea.

Lastly, many psychics will use tools to help with with their readings regardless of the nature of their gift. Just because someone uses Tarot cards, runes, crystals or a pendulum doesn't make them a lesser reader.

So when you are planning on getting involved with a psychic reader, think about what you are hoping to learn and choose someone whose skills fit the bill.
