Crybaby Bridge, Urban Legend, Myth, Or Based On Reality

At least in the case of Crybaby Bridge in Salem Ohio there does seem to be more than myth to the story. Back in August of this year a man killed his wife and then himself. The local Sheriffs Department in Lisbon Ohio put out a statement that it was an apparent murder suicide. The couple lived on Egypt road which leads to Crybaby Bridge. The man who was named Greg W Hensley age 47 killed his 49 year old wife in her parents home by shooting her in the head. Her name was Tracie Hensley.

They had been staying at the home of Tracie Hensley's mother and stepfather. The couple had just moved back to the area and were looking for work. The couple had apparently argued earlier in the evening and Tracie Hensley had told him to leave and move out of the house. At some point Greg Hensley went into the couples bedroom and got the automatic weapon. He returned to the kitchen and shot several shots killing his wife with one shot to the head. He then put the weapon to his own head and shot himself.

Elderly Lady Was Burned Alive In An iron Cage On Crybaby Bridge

Back in 1977 an elderly lady was actually put into a iron cage on the bridge and burned alive. Who ever killed her was never found. Ohio State Police said that it was an apparent satanic ritual. Police were never able to determine the identity of the elderly lady. The police did find items in the woods from a satanic cult. Over the years since then other satanic items including animal sacrifices have been found in the woods in the area.

Another Murder Suicide Once Happened In The Same Area

In 1959 there was a house about a hundred yards from the bridge. A young couple was living in the house and they argued all the time. One Saturday afternoon they had a particularly bad argument and while they were arguing the couples two year old little boy ran to the bridge and before they knew it the little boy had drowned in the creek. Almost three weeks to the day from the day the young couples baby drowned the young man killed his wife with one shot to the head and then walked to the center of the bridge and shot himself with one shot to the head.

A few weeks later the couples house burned to the ground. The couples belongings were still in the house. It was investigated as a arson but the crime was never solved. Some people over the years have reported seeing a small house with brightly lighted windows in almost the same exact location where the couples house once was. There is no house there today.

A Baby Crying Is Often Heard On The Bridge

People in the area would report from time to time that they would hear a small male child laughing and giggling on the bridge. Other people would report hearing the sound of a baby crying. It is said that if you try to walk towards where you hear the baby crying that the sound will appear to change direction. And then you realize that the sound of the baby crying is all around you. Many times over the years the police have been called with the reports of a baby crying in the area. Nothing has ever been found.

You can drive to the bridge today but you should not trespass on anyone's private property. Always ask permission before you go on private property. It would appear that at least in Salem Ohio that something really is going on at Crybaby Bridge. With everything that has happened here it's hard to explain everything away. It would appear that something very strange is going on in Salem Ohio out at Crybaby Bridge.

At least 36 people have been found dead in and around the bridge on Maud Hughes Road in the last hundred years or so.
At least 36 people have been found dead in and around the bridge on Maud Hughes Road in the last hundred years or so.

The Screaming Bridge of Maud Hughes Road

Maud Hughes Bridge is located in Liberty Township Ohio. There have been at least 36 people found dead many under mysterious circumstances under and around the Maude Hughes Bridge over the last hundred years. There are railroad tracks are under the bridge. About one mile away an American Indian graveyard was discovered in 1975. Does this have anything to do with what goes on at the bridge.

At Least 17 Suicides Have Occurred At Or Near The Bridge

A large number of suicides ( at least 17 ) have occurred at or near the bridge. At least three murder suicides have occurred with in a half mile of this bridge. Strangely the last murder suicide occurred here in 1984 at the bridge. Now there really isn't anything that strange about a murder suicide except twenty years before in 1964 another murder suicide occurred and twenty years before that in 1944 another murder suicide happened. There was a suicide in 1994 but it was a woman and she hung herself from the bridge. Why do people come to this bridge to commit suicide.

What Are The Hooded Black Figures Seen Near And On The Bridge

Another strange thing that is reported is the presence of hooded black figures that have been seen walking on and near the bridge going back at least a hundred or more years. Some people say they look like monks while other people say there is nothing inside the black hooded cloaks.

1967 Murder Suicide At The Bridge

In April of 1967 a woman aged 23 threw her nine month old daughter off the bridge and then hung herself by the neck from the bridge. It is this baby that many people say is the baby heard crying when it's raining. But many people say you could hear a baby crying on or near the bridge going back at least 60 years. If so then there must have been another baby who lost it's life on or near the bridge.

Ghost Train And A Man With A Lantern

There have been many reports over the years of a ghostly steam locomotive train on the track at or near the bridge. Some people say the train is pulling railroad cars while other people have reported seeing only a black steam locomotive. Some people have even reported seeing two men throwing wood into a fire you can see on the steam locomotive. There is no record of a train locomotive of this type wrecking at or near the bridge.

Some people say they hear a train whistle sounding under the bridge when there is no train in the area. Some people tell of smelling a strong smell of sulfur in the area while other people tell of seeing strange red lights that appear to roll along on the ground.

However there is a factual account of a brakeman on a train passing through the area being struck by the side of the bridge and being killed instantly. It is said that he hit the side of the bridge so hard that one of his arms and his head was torn off and then his body fell under the train. It is said he was carrying a lantern at the time of the accident and the lantern was found crushed under the train. This accident happened in the 1940s and over the years people have told of seeing a man with a lantern walking along the train track near the bridge. It is said that when he gets near where the accident happened he vanishes.

1954 Couple Dies In Apparent Murder Suicide

In 1954 on May 3 the strangest occurrence ever to happen on the bridge happened. A man, his wife and the man's brother were traveling in a car when it stalled on the bridge and would not start. The man's brother got out to walk to a friends house about a mile away to get help with getting the car going. When the man returned with a friend to try to fix the car the woman was hanging from the bridge down over the tracks and the man's brother had apparently set down behind the steering wheel of the car and cut his own throat with a straight razor. Several months later the police finally said that the man had hung his wife from the bridge and then killed himself.

The man's brother and the couples family always said that someone else killed the couple. The man's family said that the straight razor did not belong to the man who used it on himself and that he had never been known to carry a knife. The new looking rope that the woman was found hung with had not been in the car according to the man who went for help when the car stalled and would not crank. It was his car and he said the rope had not been in the car. Ever since this incident happened the sound of a man and woman talking are heard on the bridge and then both are heard screaming. What happened that May night in 1954 has never been settled in the minds of many people. Many of the people in the area to this day say that the couple were killed by someone else. Neither of the young couples families ever believed it was a murder suicide.

What is it about this bridge and the area around it that causes people to commit suicide here. Is there actually some type of demonic influence over this area. It really does appear that something paranormal is going on in this area. Many paranormal investigators who have come to this bridge say that the bridge and the area around it is a hot bed of paranormal activity. When I and my group visited the bridge in 1999 we got a evp on the bridge of an older mans voice that kept saying over and over, " Oh God Please Help Me " I hope to return to this bridge in the future and check it out again. I felt the strongest presence of evil under this bridge that I have ever felt. Several times the evening I was there I saw shadow people on and under the bridge. I smelled sulfur there on the bridge the evening I was there. I really do believe there is a lot of paranormal activity in the area of the bridge.

What great stories! There is an old bridge several miles from our house where 2 people have been murdered. The murders were several years apart and neither have been solved. There have been several stories of weird sounds and happenings around this old bridge. Maybe some places just become evil. Voting this up and interesting. :)

Hi crazyhorsesghost. What creepy goings on. I don´t see how anyone can discount the theory that these places aren´t haunted when so many people report to the police or others, that they have seen and heard things. Great hub crazy.
